just wondering what the most effective 2000 point ork list is for a league at my local wargames club!
im the only ork player and theres eldar, tau, csm, daemons, nids and necrons so any advice would be great!

keep it real!

Lootas, lootas, lootas, they will kill a lot of those demon princes, and do well against eldar mechs and such. Nob bikers, with a boss, and a mad doc are pretty epic as well. Also the dakka jet is very powerful. I am not an orc player, I just see what works. At least 2 squads of lootas, and nob biker squads, are a pretty good core. Shoota boyz are a good solid troop choice.

Also if not a fan of bikes, flamer boyz in a battle wagon are very strong.

Hope this helps!

I just came on here with almost this exact post in mind! Haha.

I myself have a 2,000pt Single FOC tournament coming up next weekend at my FLGS and I've been wondering what to take. The last time I played a tournament there it was 2250 double FOC, and I won by a wide margin, missing only a single point overall the whole day (I forgot to move a dakkajet for Linebreaker in my last game, oops!).

The list I used that day went as follows:

ORKS PRIMARY
HQ: Bikerboss (Klaw, Cybork)= 135
HQ: Bikerboss (Klaw, Cybork)= 135
HQ: Megaboss (Cybork, Bosspole)= 115
Troops: 5 Bikernobs (2 Klaws, Painboy, Cyborks, Banner, Bosspole)= 350
Troops: 5 Bikernobs (2 Klaws, Painboy, Cyborks, Banner, Bosspole)= 350
Troops: 9 Boyz + Nob (Big Choppa) in Trukk (Ram, Big Shoota)= 115
Troops: 10 Gretchin + Runtherd= 40
FA: DDakkajet (3 Soopa Shootas, Fighta Ace)= 130
FA: DDakkajet (3 Soopa Shootas, Fighta Ace)= 130
FORT: Aegis (Comm-Link)= 70

NECRON ALLIES
HQ: Destroyer Lord (Scythe, Weave)= 140
Troops: 5 Warriors in Nightscythe= 165
Troops: 5 Warriors in Nightscythe= 165
FA: 6 Wraiths= 210

for 2250 on the dot using 2 Ork FOCs and 1 Necron FOC.

Now, thing about that tournament is that there weren't any really serious eldar players there; I played Taudar in the first round but the guy had never actually played his list before so it wasn't too difficult to just take advantage of his mistakes, honestly. I did play against CSM Drake spam in round 2, my toughest match up, and I still rolled right over him because I was fast enough to get to combat ahead of the drakes and he went first, so my flyers came on after his and lit the drakes up.

At the tournament coming up, I know for a fact there will be a really competitive Eldar list there. A friend is bringing the following:

4x 5 Avengers in Wave Serpents
20 Guardians with 2 Bright Lances
9 Jetbikes with 2 Shurikan Cannons
Wraithknight
Crimson Hunter (Eldar Lance flyer)
7 Warp Spiders
plus attendant Farseers

Now, he's only just gotten into Eldar and hasn't even played double-digit games yet to my knowledge (a goodly chunk of this army will only be primed for the tournament I'm sure.... pfft!), so there is some experience factor where I could have an advantage, but all the same, this is a very serious list. And I don't really feel confident a Nob/Wraith uber assault army would do much good against it.

A scaled down, single FOC, 2000pt list like the one above which I'd thought about taking looks like this:

ORKS PRIMARY
HQ: Bikerboss (Klaw, Cybork, Attack Squig)= 150
HQ: Bikerboss (Klaw, Cybork, Attack Squig)= 150
Troops: 5 Bikernobs (1 Klaw, Painboy, Cyborks, Banner, Bosspole)= 325
Troops: 5 Bikernobs (1 Klaw, Painboy, Cyborks, Banner, Bosspole)= 325
Troops: 10 Gretchin + Runtherd= 40
FA: DDakkajet (3 Soopa Shootas, Fighta Ace)= 130
FA: DDakkajet (3 Soopa Shootas, Fighta Ace)= 130
FORT: Aegis (Comm-Link)= 70

NECRON ALLIES
HQ: Destroyer Lord (Scythe, Weave)= 140
Troops: 5 Warriors in Nightscythe= 165
Troops: 5 Warriors in Nightscythe= 165
FA: 6 Wraiths= 210

For 2000pts on the dot. This is a very aggressive list and can handle all your ROTM local gaming store crop of players handily, but I have serious doubts about taking on 4 Serpents and a Knight with a Crimson Hunter in tow....

Thinking about what might be better at handling the Eldar, I thought about Battlewagons. AV14 takes the vast majority of Eldar shooting out of the game completely, so some smart pre-game play (how you deploy and all that good stuff) can put you in a position to get your entire army across the table and in his face without taking a single casualty (hopefully). It needs a little luck to fight off the Knight's guns and the Guardian Lances on turn one, but that's it, really. So here's the list I came up with based on what I actually own (had a list with 7 wagons but I only own 5 :/ ):

ORKS PRIMARY
HQ: Megaboss (Cybork, Bosspole)= 115
HQ: Megaboss (Cybork, Bosspole)= 115
Troops: 3 Meganobs in Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 220
Troops: 3 Meganobs in Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 220
Troops: 20 Boyz (Shootas, 2 Rokkits)= 140
Troops: 20 Boyz (Shootas, 2 Rokkits)= 140
Troops: 20 Boyz (Shootas, 2 Rokkits)= 140
HS: Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 100
HS: Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 100
HS: Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 100

NECRON ALLIES
HQ: Destroyer Lord (Scythe, Weave)= 140
Troops: 5 Warriors in Nightscythe= 165
Troops: 5 Warriors in Nightscythe= 165
FA: 4 Wraiths=140

2000pts on the dot again. 7 Scoring units, Flyer support for hopefully handling the Hunter and maybe a Serpent or two if they last long enough. I'm not really sure about this list, honestly; it's sort of archetypal right now, just looking at options that actually allow enough orks to get across the table to do some hurt on the eldar once they get there (I'm not wasting time trying to outshoot them!). The same concept can work against Tau (almost definitely better, actually; Tau are not nearly as mobile and won't even have the Lances to help all their S7 weapons against my AV14). The Wraiths and Lord are mostly meant to protect the Wagons' flank from up-jumping Spiders, providing a little spacial buffer that, additionally, will do a healthy lot of damage if it actually gets into combat.

Like I said, I don't really know what Ork list actually stands a serious chance against the Eldar list above. Orks' chances are greatly improved just by using double FOC, so if that's an option then more power to you! I know I'm going to miss it this weekend....

EDIT: r.e. Desrok1's post-- I don't know how I feel about Lootas at this point in a competitive meta. I honestly don't like them much at all. One Heldrake will make a total mess of them, same goes for a single Serpent, a single Riptide.... And they are simply not reliable enough with their shooting to kill those things back. You could load them into Wagons, I haven't tried that yet. That could make for a pretty fantastic firebase, but not being a scoring unit is a big issue then, too, and not one which they can possibly hope to overcome, so they've got a bunch of problems, only some of which may be solved right now. I might even try Tankbustas first; they allow you to be much more aggressive, which is a big deal for ork support units, IMHO.

My vote for competitive orks goes for triple full lootas, 2 bosses with nobs in dedicated wagons, with 3 boyz units in heavy support wagons. All shoota boyz of course. I think that's probably pretty close to your point cap.

They're actually one of the best units for taking down AV 10-12, so any flyer or serpent. If you have em lined up at the back, it'd be hard to line up a good template on them with the drake, even with torrent. And if you kill less than 5, they're still fearless.

They are wildly random though. If the dice gods hate you, you may only get 45 shots. If they love you, you could get enough to take down a thunderhawk gunship in one round.

2 Megabosses with Cybork and Bosspoles, 60 Shootas, 45 Lootas and 5 Wagons with Red Paint and Rams runs you 1765, and you're still missing all the nobs. It sounds like a good list for 2000, but you can't actually fit it at 2000, so.....

Lootas in any number less than 15 are really too vulnerable in some match ups. You could drop a Boyz mob, convert one unit of Lootas to Tankbustas and load them in the 3rd wagon, then have 355 points for Nobs, which is a little bit nicer, but still not fantastic. Go for 2x3 Meganobs, 115 left, drop 2 Tankbustas and take an Aegis with Quad Gun and 10 Grots?

HQ: Megaboss (Kombi-Skorcha, Cybork, Bosspole)= 120
HQ: Megaboss (Cybork, Bosspole)= 115
Elites: 13 Tankbustas= 195
Elites: 15 Lootas= 225
Elites: 15 Lootas= 225
Troops: 3 Meganobs in Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 220
Troops: 3 Meganobs in Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 220
Troops: 20 Shootas= 120
Troops: 20 Shootas= 120
Troops: 10 Gretchin + Runtherd= 40
HS: Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 100
HS: Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 100
HS: Wagon (Red Paint, Ram)= 100
FORT: Aegis (Quad-Gun)= 100

2,000pts. Backfield scoring, backfield gunline supporting 5 aggressive wagons. The boys aren't looking super threatening though, TBH. Though they don't always especially need to be.

all great suggestions guys my last match was the relic against a tau/csm list
i used
weirdboy in a battlewagon full of shoota boyz
1 big mobs of shoota boyz
10 gretchin
1 deff dredd
big mek with kff behind him
dakka jet
6 warbikers 1 nob pk
and i attached ghazkull to kommandos with snikrott (dirty i know)

i won but it was only due to ghazzkull ripping riptides to shreds and getting lucky

Heh, Ghaz+Snikrot is indeed a little dirty, but not nearly as dirty as a Wave Serpent, so go get 'em! Actually makes Snikrot pretty damn good, now that I think of it, even without being able to charge on arrival....

I'd suggest more Dakkajets and a Comm-link for that list. Get it all on at once, WAAAGH, 2++ for the Kommandos hiding behind Ghaz and lots of shooting from the jets. Neat trick, at least.

Think I'll have to try it out m'self for some fun!

In depth post and a position thats anti whats arguably the best Ork unit in the codex? I like you orkdom

For your list, the only thing I'd recommend is to drop the shoota rokkits unless you absolutely, positively, need that crappy unreliable AP3.

I've done the Gaz+Snik thing, it was very underwhelming. Might work in a multiple force org list where you can bring a crapload of bosses on all together, but otherwise, I'd stick to deffkoptas + bikerboss for this sort of thing

Heh, thanks Dakkamite!

My opinion of Lootas basically comes down to the nature of the unit: they're not an aggressive unit at all, made for hanging back and shooting things from afar. In my very humble opinion, any Ork list that wants to hang back and shoot things from afar, or relies for major damage upon a unit which does that, is a list that is going to be seriously outclassed by the top tier armies in the game right now-- armies who specialize at that sort of thing in a way that Orks just plain don't, and in fact were never meant to do. Orks should be pressing forward and putting the screws to their opponent, not giving them leave to move freely about the board while the boyz lounge about in their deployment zone.

Basically, yeah Loota shots can kill a Serpent, but the Serpent is significantly better at killing Lootas, and can do so from further out than the Lootas can even shoot back. And so on, and so forth.

Their natural unreliability is a piddling factor in comparison.

As to the Rokkits:
The Rokkits were just there for purposes of opportunism, so yeah, probably not worth the points. I can't honestly say I'm a big fan of that list anyway.

Same goes for Ghaz and Snikrot, looking at it I realized the unit costs almost 500pts, which is just crazy for what's basically a single mob of slugga boys who can't assault until turn 3 at the earliest. 2 mobs of 20 shootas in wagons beats that any day of the week. Or 4 mobs of trukkas for slightly more. Pick your poison, Snikrot is not a sound competitive decision, I guess.

You had success with trukkers? I absolutely love them but I find they're a bit of an 'alpha strike' army in that they only work with first turn. And by work I mean more "sorta work well enough I can use them and sometimes win"

Though unlike other alpha strike lists they don't even do any damage on that turn...

If you can get forgeworld, Grot Bomms are amazing as fire support for your assault units. The large blasts make your opponent spread out and messes with their deployment, their re-rolls and ordnance status means they can decimate IG artillery and similar stuff, and their mere existance will cause the opponent to dedicate enormous amounts of shooty to get rid of them if they get first turn

Yeah, I've been tihnking about a Trukka list, actually. Well, a combo trukka/nob/wraith list with 5 flyers. I think it's a list you could definitely get some mileage from.

I have only actually used a trukka list once in 6th and I did get the tau player to concede really fast. He was pretty amazed and psyched out by the speed with which I crossed the board. Didn't have any clue how to go about prioritizing targets.

I played Grot Bomms with IG allies once, too, really early in 6th, that list can get pretty mean. 9 Bomm Launchas with a Manticore, massed Lootas, general IG fire support. But I haven't ever built up a collection of Gretchin IG counts-as, so it's not a list I like to take to tournaments, honestly. It isn't worth much for me unless it also looks cool on the table! I also wonder what that list would do against Eldar. Serpents aren't too fussed about even 12 Ordnance templates on the first turn, nor is a wraithknight....

I'm not super familiar with Wraiths, so I took a look at their stats... holy crap! Its no wonder Orks are doing so badly when everyone else gets such insane toys to play with

Do you run them as Necron wraith models or do you have a conversion for them too? I'm looking at some destroyer bodies I have lying about... maybe some Orks riding these could be counts-as wraiths...

I have like 20 of the old gorkamorka monowheels hanging about, so what I did was I took the torsos off some Destroyers and attached their spines to the wheels. Throw on some bionic choppa and klaw arms, like the kromlech bits, and heads to match, they look great. My destroyer lord is fixed-up/looted and remote controlled by a grot sitting on his back.

They make a very nice compliment to Nob Bikers and the like, and Nightscythes are a good compliment to Dakkajets. Orks and Necrons really synergize quite nicely.

If you wana go full-competitive, you basically have 2 options.

- Multiple nob bikers

- Battlewagon spam

In both cases you need allies to cover u'r weaknesses. Especially in backfield firesupport. Lootas are good but they melt the moment they meet ignore cover weapons. And competitive armies pack those. So you want something like broadsides and a riptide on your side. Probably ig.

Afraid I don't know what you mean by monowheels? You mean like a single wheel replacing the legs, because thats certainly within what I can scratch build

That + Kombi Skorchas on some of those MANz... seriously, its like having a micro burna wagon for just 15 points. The one that goes off will more than make up for the two that don't!

You also seem to have a bit of a thing for Big Choppa Nobs... I've found them pretty much worthless! Why do you take them? I absolutely love the big choppa models and am a bit disillusioned with power klaws so if you can convince me I'll run them myself!

I'm very disillusioned with Klaws, and Big Choppas are just a way of making the squad that much better against vehicles, actually. 5pts for much greater ability to crack a Serpent or a Vindicator or whatever on the charge, which is something the army has to be able to do in assault.

GM Monowheels: google image search reveals... nothing? Here's a WIP shot of my wraiths I have on my 'bucket account.

Donno, I myself am shooting for a Trukk Heavy list (4 Boyz, 2 MANZ trukks) for 2k, supported by Lootas and a couple of Shooty Wagons
But this Necron allies idea seems great. I wish I could see the Ork/Necron lists from LVO that did well
