I've had some luck with just a warp talon squad MoT, one guy got the extra mutation. Took it will not die, rage, and preferred enemy as my 3 tactics I think, and I beat a tau force of 2 fire warrior squads and a crisis suit with plasma. It's all about knowing what you will fight, although I would like to play a 4 person kill team where we only see lists when we show up to the game, sort of like a patrol surprise engagement.
EDIT: forgot to say it was Chaos Space Marines

I think the point of Kill Team is to kit out a small number of models to be really flippin' cool to bring to quick games, not to bring a super competitive GATTA WIN GUYZ army.
From what I understand, Orks are pretty much king of Kill Team because 30 T4 guys who are individual models rather than all being part of a squad is just extremely difficult to take down before you get overwhelmed. Templates aren't as effective because they don't have to maintain coherency, so the most common effective anti-horde weaponry isn't as good. I've also heard of people doing really nasty things with IG or Chaos Cultist blobs.
I imagine a squad of Tyranid Warriors for the synapse running with a bajillion Gaunts would be pretty effective too.
HOWEVER I just think it's so much more fun to run 5 super kitted out guys against 5 other super kitted out guys, because it makes the games quick, and is a fantastic modeling opportunity. I'm planning on making some Sternguard here really soon for just such a purpose.

The funniest part of Kill Teams is the EPIC story created by a band of Heroes/Villans. Some armies, like Nids and Crons, provide more of a 'Generic Bad Guy' fight scene where the Kill Team comes in like a bad 80s action film. There is a lot of fun to be had in a Kill Team game when your not trying to break it.
Depending on how they rule 'Brotherhood of Psykers' then Blue Horrors make a great 'Bad Guys' list.
If they truly rule that each model is it's own unit, then each one has a Heavy
Bolster running around. This will break Kill Teams, and isn't much fun, but you asked.
Most will suspend the 'Brotherhood of Psykers' rule, which makes this one of the WORST kill teams.
A good middle ground is to get them to keep track of the units and one model from each of the units can be the big shooter. This will give you flexibility by picking which model gets to shoot while keeping in line with the spirit of the unit. Don't be TFG, and take 3 (or even 4 might be possible) minimum units.

I'm aware, but not everyone uses all the KT rules, and sometimes modifies them. Which is why I said 'Depending'.

You are correct, anything with a 2+ save and more than 2 wounds may not be brought into Kill Team 6E

Grey knights are pretty handy. Basic troops all with storm bolters and power weapons. Psycannons for vehicles. Teleport jumps for late game objective grabs. Or inquisition henchman squads for ultimate customisation. Or do you need to have an inquisitor for the henchman squads to work in kill team?

I dont know much about GK FOC and where Inquisitors sit, but I would imagine an Inquisitor is an HQ right?

More than 3 wounds, actually. You can bring Tyranid Warriors, or a horde of Nurgle Chaos Spawn if you want. Just looked over the rules tonight.
I actually think I know what I'm gonna do for the Kill Team tournament we're having in April. 2 squads of Dire Avengers, exarch warlord = TW-Avenger Shuriken Catapult, exarch of other squad = dirty fighting specialist with fleshbane, and a powersword/shuriken pistol. (Fleshbane Ap3 at initiative 6 in a game mode no one will have better than 3+ armor seems giggles to me). Nominate two other guys to have Infiltrate to try to position in a way to pick of someone else's specialists, and the other probably with Preferred Enemy just so he's more dangerous.
Would likely struggle with Dark Eldar (no real way of handling Dark Eldar DT's which are legal to bring) and against hordes of orks/nids, but I think it'd be solid against more elites builds and would still stand a chance against hordes with how deadly and mobile Dire Avengers are.

Oh get off your high horse... The prize for first place is an Ork Stompa. I agree that games are often meant to be fun, and I've played enough of those... but freak. It's $10 to enter and the prize is 10 times that amount. I'm not really one of those "win at all costs guys" but my budget is really tight, so winning this tournament is... very beneficial to me.

Did you decide on a team yet, William?
After wracking my brain best I could, I think the best possible team comp would is probably Chaos Space Marines in a Rhino with a missile launcher, and a 10 man cultist squad with autoguns. Cultists are simply lots of extra bodies, CSM are pretty solid troops units for this type of game mode because they're adaptable, have the best armor, and rock grenades down to every last guy.

I did. Haha,
It's pretty simple, but I can't decide between the two lists
10x boyz, 1 big shoota
10xBoyz
5x Tank bustas
or
10xboyz and one nob with eavy Armour
10xboyz 1 big shoota and one nob with eavy Armour
1 deffkopta with rokkits
obviously the numbers will overwhelm the puny Sm forces of 10 men or less, but let me know what you guys think.

Dark Eldar do kill team very well. I for one had great success with Reaver Jetbikes as they are ridiculously fast (48 inches a turn!) and can simply avoid some armies al together with that speed all the while pumping the enemy full of strength 4 auto hits. My preferred list is...
2 Normal Reaver Jetbikes. 66pts
1 Arena Champ with Venom Blade. 37pts
2 Reavers with Blasters. 74pts
1 Reaver with Cluster Caltrops. 44pts
197pts. USR's are given out like stealth to Cluster Caltrop Guy, Preferred enemy to a Blaster and Shrouded to other blaster. the tactics are quite simply, blade vane across the bored with normal guys making sure they are out of range every time while doing damage to important models. Shrouded blaster guy has a2+ cover save at all times so he should be safe to shoot away while the other blaster will use assault move to keep safe while blasting away. The aim of the game is, unless he can alpha strike you off the bored before you get moving then it becomes VERY hard to win against you.
