Hello,

I've finally gotten around to painting centurions. I'm going to add them to the my Second Company, Ultramarines, which of course have yellow shoulder pad borders.

Anyway, The fluff in the codex is vague if I should paint any yellow company detail, describing the centurions as "pulled from assault and devastator squads from the chapter". Are they an auxillary gaggle of marines that are added to any operation and not company specific? Looking at the artwork in the new SM codex, the shoulder pad edging for ultramarines is brass/gold (which bugs me - which company gets to wear gold bling now?) for a lot of things, not only the centurions. For the Imperial Fists however they are red which suggests they are tied to the 3rd.

I guess it also begs the question I should assign the centurions to the 9th or 10th squad with markings (im doing devastators)

The only marines I'd consider giving gold borders to are the chapter master and his honor guard cronies.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Well, the way they were worked in to the Sentinels of Terra book, it sounds liek the suits are special gear of the chapter rather than regular issue to any specific company. They are crewed by the men of the company however, so they may get markings to represent this.

Gold is just shinier yellow, which I believe is the third or fourth company.

DeviCenties would be ninth company, I suspect.

You could have them as unadorned bits of standard chapter kit, or you could equally paint them up in the same colours as the marine who is supposed to be piloting the suit. Both could be supported by the fluff, so which do you prefer?

Squad markings on Marines is supposed to be a form of heraldry. In an all enclosing suit of standard armour where the features of the wearer can't be seen, how do you work out who is who, other than painting markings on them. Equally you could say that Marines have no use for heralrdry as they all have autosenses and (i imagine) sophistimacated IFF systems that means their HUD automatically tags everything in sight with all the required information.

I imagine that Centurion suits can have a quick mark-up spray applied before each operation.

I always assumed they were members of one of the reserve companies. (Appropriate to their type, obviously.)

Hmm. Well, the new codex has a couple slight changes on p.14 as compared to previous editions.

1st company is "silver/white", while 2nd is "yellow/gold". I'm pretty sure the heavy metal team suggested that metallic borders look c00ler for this latest codex.

Being retro, and kinda old, and not liking the idea of reserve company marines given the best gear in the armory, I'm assigning them happy yellow trim and belonging to the 10th squad in the 2nd company.

Cheers. Besides, they'll match my Alaitoc eldar

The metallic trim colours have been in the Codex since 4th, that's not new anymore...

I'm giving my Centurions red trim and appropriate squad numbers for my Ultramarines 3rd company. IX for the five man Devastator squad, the other half will be led by the squad leader in PA, unsure as to whether they get heavy weapons though yet...

My 4 man Assault squad will be squad VIII, as will my 6 man Land Speeder squad.

Quoted For Truth. It wasn't even 100% new then. Blood Angels have been alternating between yellow and gold chest eagles since 1st edition and the Imperial Fists were listed as yellow/gold in Codex Imperialis. FYI Yellow/gold and Silver/white are heraldically interchangeable in the real world.
