Yeah sorry but I am a huge fan of conversions, I even decided to run my Guard as mercenaries just to give me a fluffy reason to have some variety among my troops.
Plus I really enjoy making something that no one else has, while still keeping it well seated within the setting.

Ever since I discovered truescaling, I simply refuse the idea of ceasing to convert my models.
Not that I didn't love it before, heh.

I think it's okay for people to buy products they want to use, and not buy products they don't. If I want to use GW's rules, I can buy their rules. And kudos to them for making rules I wanted to buy! Money in the bank. If I don't also want to buy their models, I don't have to. If I just want the rules, I'll just pay for the rules. I certainly don't owe them some weird debt of loyalty for deigning to sell me a product, especially not at the prices they charge.
As it happens, I buy a good amount of models from GW but don't play the games. I appreciate the wide range of plastic kits because they're good for converting. I don't want to use their rules at all, but... is that okay? Or, now that I've bought a few random boxes, is it now my moral duty to shell out for additional items I don't want?

QFT. I happen to love many of GWs model kits, but there's a large segment of their models I either hate, or prefer to alter. I also think special characters are MADE to be converted. They provide a special archetypal build with specialized rules and war gear so you can customize your force more then you could with just a vanilla HQ or whatnot. Below is my 'counts as Kharn' Word Bearer lord, just one of my many, many conversions.

Generally I'll use the official model, but I don't mind a cool Eldar kit-bash for Eldrad if it's done well. So long as the model has the right wargear and is the right size, I'm happy.
For things like Superheavy Tanks or Titans, I prefer the official model. It looks cool, and doesn't look like you and I are playing with Tonka Trucks and Barbie Dolls.
My thoughts exactly. Conversions just bother me, so do counts as. I like using the correct model, that's what makes it 40k to me. Like you said otherwise we're looking at Tonka trucks and barbie dolls...
I'm not entirely sure if I can get this. I try to but... No... Of course its your opinion and there's no right or wrong here.
But to me, 40k is above all a hobby where you create your army and try to make it unique. Modelling is a big part of the game and the more time you put into it, the better!
Just a theoretical question: I play BA and instead of buying the boring ASM box, I usually buy the Death Company box. Same price, better options and I'll still build, paint and play them as Assault Squads. What do you think?

As part of a conversion, I will simply use whatever I feel like. Because if I wish to create a model a specific way, why should I throw on blinders and pretend that all the other third party models, some of which actually do not have games to be used in, don't exist? It's dumb. Especially for semi-abandoned armies such as SoB. Look at the model range and tell me just how far I'd go with creativity restricting myself to only GW models there.
Proxies are an entirely different matter though, effort needs to be put into it after all.

As longs as it looks cool and its about the right size - I am happy to for people to proxy stuff for various games - some of the official models for systems including Warmachine are not to my taste - again the Centurion and Marine flyers are just horrible looking models and I don't like the Tau battlesuit style but love their APCs and Tanks.
For 40K I tend to use GW, but also Reaper, Mongoose, Warmachine/Hordes, Statueqesue, Raging Heroes, and few others.
I have used Dredd Fleet in Uncharted Seas, 40K in Judge Dredd
We were trying out Dropzone Comm the other day so I use my Epic Eldar...................
but each to their own................. but bottom line is if I don't like the official model I am not spending large amounts of cash on it.

I agree with using GW models for GW games, tired of seeing plastic toy soldiers and action figures as proxies. I like conversions as long as they are done well, 85% or more GW bits, and are legal models to use.

I pity you.
No creativity. No Flavour. Nothing besides a splatter of paint to make your army different to the one next to you. In a setting where anything goes, vast unexplored lore, so much classified information, time jumps, secret organisations, limitless xenos and 99% of stories untold and yet you limit yourself to the small amounts of models GW produces without fully looking into why the setting was made the way it was...
For all to create and change as they please and fit into the story. For that guy to put boobs on his guard, for that marine to use heresy armour in 40k, for the eldar player to make exodites, for tau to use human allies and the possibilities are endless.
I pity you.
This.
If I go by your logic, why use the zombies from fantasy vampire counts and kit bash them with guard parts if I already have cultist models? That would be lame right? (They look awesome by the way.) Oh, I also use them as plague bearers in my daemon army, because the lore says the PBs infect a host most of the time (possession), not come out of the warp in their true form. (See the Horus Heresy novel where Horus becomes infected)
Or how about my Sisters immolators? I should just shell out 45 dollars or more for a rhino chassis with an old as balls metal attachment rather then build my own unique models that look better as a second edition rhino chassis.
Or my scratch built penitent engines that are male AND female.
Or my Nurgle Daemon prince model that I kit bashed on the plastic wings instead of making him hoof it everywhere.
Or the crusaders I built out of high elves for their bad ass shields and lances.
Purist is lame, it lacks flavor and really doesn't involve much of the hobby after a couple months. (IE: Amateurs say they are purist because they are too lazy to actually make their own flavor army)
