Painlord Titan Princeps of Slaanesh
|
Hello everyone! Been a while since I've been in the tournament scene, since I had to miss last year's entire circuit. Hoping to fix that this year!
I'm still playing Emperor's Children, and for this 1850 tournament here they are!
HQ:
Chaos lord, Mark of Slaanesh, Chaos bike, power fist, burning brand of skalathrax, sigil of corruption, meltabombs, veteran of the long war, gift of mutation
Troops:
30 cultists, 15 autoguns, 3 heavy stubbers
30 cultists, 10 autoguns, 3 flamers
10 noisemarines, 2 blastmasters
10 noisemarines, 2 blastmasters
5 noisemarines, blastmaster
5 noisemarines, blastmaster
Fast Attack:
5 Chaos Spawn, mark of slaanesh
Heldrake, baleflamer
Heavy Support:
Maulerfiend, Lasher tendrils
Vindicator, Daemonic Possession
This list has been serving me very well in practice, and only seems to suffer versus some monstrous creatures, Armor 14, and 2+ saves. The maulerfiend's job is to go for armor 14 if I can, backup is the lord's meltabomb and S8 glancing hits. 2+ saves I typically just have to deal with using volume of fire.
On to game 1!
Game 1: Crimson Fists Space Marines
HQ
Pedro Kantor
Troops
5 scouts, landspeeder storm
5 scouts, landspeeder storm
5 scouts, landspeeder storm
Elites
10 sternguard, drop pod, 2 heavy flamers, combi-melta
10 sternguard, drop pod, 2 heavy flamers, combi-melta
9 sternguard, drop pod, heavy flamer, combi-melta
Heavy Support:
7 devastators, 4 lascannons, drop pod
7 devastators, 4 lascannons, drop pod.
He seized the initiative from me, and landed his alpha strike of sternguard after scouting up with his scouts:
After the dust settled, I had a unit of cultists blinded and I was missing a squad of chaos marines - first blood to the space marines!
I counterattacked, killing most of the sternguard, two landspeeder storms, and killing a few scouts
He had pretty much done his damage, and over the next few turns I ground him down. Here's the board at the end of turn 5:
My chaos lord slew pedro in a challenge, and for his troubles....he became a chaos spawn! Great way to end a round.
Game 1: Victory primary, victory secondary
Game 2: Tyranids
HQ:
2 flying hive tyrants
Troops
tervigon
30 termagants
Heavy Support:
Exocrine
3 carnifexes, double devourer
3 carnifexes, double devourer
My opponent won the roll to go first, but gave it to me. I took advantage of it to put three wounds on his non-warlord tyrant, which killed itself with perils when it tried to use warp blast.
The other hive tyrant killed some spawn, then got gunned down and died on crasing as well. When the tervigon showed up, my blastmasters made quick work of it, and we called the game.
Here's a photo from my second turn, after the tyrants were dealt with:
Victory Primary, tie secondary (secondary required wounding a "keg" in the middle of the board to knock if off the side)
Game 3: Tau
My game 3 opponent had scored two massacres so far with a straight tau list:
HQ
O'shavah
Troops:
10 FW
10 FW
10 FW
6 FW, devilfish
6 pathfinders
6 pathfinders
6 sniper drones
hammerhead, longstrike
3 broadsides, 6 missile drones
Farsight Enclave:
ethereal
3 battlesuits
Earth Caste Riptide
I only have pictures of his deployment, but in the end he didn't have enough shots, and one bad scatter roll ruined his best chance at making a comeback. All my ignoring cover shots cut through his forces, which deployed tightly enough that I could not miss, really. Nobody failed a morale test due to the ethereal, but I did manage to tie up his riptide for three complete turns, due to it being WS1 and hitting even spawn on a 5+.
Victory Primary, Victory secondary
Longstrike off to the side. He got eaten by spawn
Tomorrow will be games 4 and 5! Wish me luck!!

Game 4 Was against Iyanden Eldar.
HQ
Spiritseer, wargear that makes psychic powers warp charge 1.
Troops
5 wraithguard, wave serpent
5 wraithguard, wave serpent
5 wraithguard with Dscythes, wave serpent with spirit stones
10 dire avengers
Heavy Support
Wraith Knight, 2 wraith cannons WARLORD
Wraith Knight, 2 wraith cannons
3 warwalkers, double scatter laser
We had several objectives, and I knew the wraith knights would be a problem - blastmasters are great at clearing out hordes, but against monsters it means my army has basically six missile launchers to do the work they need to do.
In this tournament, objectives are placed before first turn is rolled. He placed an objective by a wall that was taller than most infantry, and I knew that would be hard for me to get to and impossible to shoot. I won the roll and chose the side he had placed objectives on to be mine. I also won the roll for first turn, and forced him to go first so I could set up in prep for night fight.
Here's just after the game started, his first turn. He moved forward to get some shots through the night fighting.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590054_md-Chaos%2C%20Eldar%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Iyanden%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Tournament.JPG

I responded by rushing forward - his warlord wraith knight was right out in front, and since he was not a character and I had no challenges to fear, my chaos lord could hammer it all he liked while it munched on cultists. Spawn and maulerfiend charged a wave serpent with D-scythe wraithguard. I managed a stunned result that did not get ignored - score! Dscythes would be silent for a turn.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590056_md-Chaos%2C%20Eldar%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Iyanden%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Tournament.JPG
On his turn 2, both his 10 man dire avenger squad and his warwalkers arrived. Wraithguard got out of their serpent to kill the maulerfiend, and the Dscythe wraithguard siddled along the ziggurat to prepare for later turns. His spiritseer cast invisibility on the wraith knight.
Shooting saw my marines getting chewed up by scatter lasers, and the maulerfiend got immobilized by the wraithguard - well damn. No more excitement from him. The scrap in the middle continued, and the vindicator took fire from the wraith knight, losing two hull points but staying capable and deadly. Wave serpent shot spawn, killing one.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590058_md-Chaos%2C%20Eldar%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Iyanden%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Tournament.JPG
On my turn, the heldrake did not arrive - which is a shame, I really could have used him this turn! His dire avengers needed to die, and my marines off to the left flank could have used some relief from the warwalkers. My spawn ran off to engage his freshly disembarked troops, while everything on the right pumped shots into his D-scythe wraithguard. Since charging them would be suicide, I needed to use all my shooting to take them down. I moved forward some marines to make sure I could use bolter shots, too.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590059_md-Chaos%2C%20Eldar%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Iyanden%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Tournament.JPG
Luckily, I did! His spiritseer made an invul save against an instant-death blastmaster, leaving him alive to cause me trouble the rest of the game. I lost two spawn to overwatch charging the wraithguard, but they made it and killed two. He got some good hits in, though, and managed to kill one as well, leaving me with one left. The scrap in the middle continued.
His turn, the dire avengers moved forward and charged into the ongoing combat, as did his spiritseer to start challenging out my lord when possible (and avoid being shot). This proved very effective at killing them all off! With invisibility on the wraith knight again, I couldn't hit much. His other wraith guard squad got out of their serpent to shoot my marines, along with his wave serpent. Warwalkers shifted right to shoot cultists, who went to ground. His other wave serpent shifted over to get side shots on the vindicator, and finished it off while his other wraith knight charged into my other 10-man noisemarine squad.
My turn 3, the heldrake arrived, vector striking the warwalkers and doing only a single hull point, but used its baleflamer to kill all of the wraithguard on that side. The remnants of my 10-man noisemarine squad on the left charged and blew up the serpent. The scrap in the middle continued, as did the fight between wraithguard and spawn. 5 man noisemarine squads tried shooting down his last wave serpent to no avail.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590061_md-Chaos%2C%20Eldar%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Iyanden%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Tournament.JPG
His turn 4, there wasn't much to do. Warwalkers moved up and shot the heldrake, doing two hull points but not killing it. His other serpent shot at the 5 man noisemarine squad near the right-side objective, but couldn't wipe them off. Combats continued. I was really hoping the wraith guard would finish off the spawn so I could vector strike and flame them and wipe them out, but it did not happen.
My turn 4, a lone noisemarine charged the warwalkers from behind to try to tie them up while the heldrake flew over the center combats, using its vector strike to do 2 wounds to what we called "the keg", a secondary objective in the board's center that required you to do wounds to it. Then it went flat-out to get into position to vector strike his remaining wave serpent, which avoided damage from another blastmaster hit. The remnants of my left-side noisemarine squad charged into the ongoing combat in the center - my chaos lord was running out of cultists!
His wraithguard finished off the spawn, consolidating towards an objective in the center. My lord challenged his spiritseer, who wounded me but made his saves so I could not kill him. The wraith knight finished off the cultists while the marines chewed on dire avengers. I won combat this time, but they held. My brave noisemarine wrecked a warwalker, and passed his saves to stay in combat.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590062_md-Chaos%2C%20Eldar%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Iyanden%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Tournament.JPG
His turn 5, the surviving wave serpent moved around back and shot down the heldrake, while his now-free wraithguard moved to claim an objective behind the ziggurat. The warwalkers stayed tied up by my noisemarine, so did little. In combat, my chaos lord finally killed the spiritseer, but him being engaged meant the wraith knight had to move over and start squishing marines. The marines, for their part, killed several dire avengers. In the OTHER wraith knight-marine combat, he killed a few more but no other results happened.
My turn 5, there was little to do. My marines moved forward and charged and killed his last wave serpent while my cultists stayed content on their objective. The marine on the left died finally to the warwalkers, while the wraith knights both murdered their respective marine squads. My chaos lord finished off the dire avengers with the help of the remaining noisemarines before they died.
Unfortunately for my opponent, the game ended right here. You can see the die rolled for going to turn 6, and it's a 1.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590063_md-Chaos%2C%20Eldar%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Iyanden%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Tournament.JPG
This was the real winner here. Had the game gone on to turn 6, one wraith knight would have killed my warlord, one would have most likely wiped out the cultists or at the very least contested my objective, and the warwalkers would have easily put more than 2 wounds on the secondary objective.
Results:
Primary - victory. 1 objective each, I had first blood.
Secondary - victory. Keg cracked!
This game ended luckily for me. I needed it to end turn 5 and it did. Had it not, no chance in hell for me. It would have been a complete 180! My thanks to Chris Carlile for an epic game 4. A real nailbiter!

Here's the report for game 5, the final round of the tournament.
Opponent: Matthew Allee
Army: Salamander Space Marines
So here we are at game 5, and the top table features codex space marines versus chaos space marines! Through all the necrons, tau, taudar and eldar two unlikely contenders for the win!
His army:
HQ
Chapter Master, bike, thunder hammer, shield eternal, artificer armor (this guy is NUTS)
Vulkan He'stan (warlord)
Troops:
5 bikers, 2 grav guns, combi-grav
10 marines, meltagun, combi-melta, drop pod
10 marines, meltagun, combi-melta, drop pod
10 marines, flamer, combi-flamer, drop pod
5 marines, flamer, combi-flamer, drop pod
Elites:
10 Sternguard, 10 combi-meltas
Heavy Support:
Thunderfire cannon
Thunderfire cannon
Ewwwww. Well, I know my two ground vehicles will be destroyed. No ifs ands or buts. Nothing to shoot down the drake, but a nasty alpha strike. Luckily, I know where his combi-meltas will be going, so if I'm going first I just have to do my damage and if I'm going second, I'll put them in reserves to make him waste shots on marines in cover or cultists or something.
It turns out it's going to be night fight, and there's only three objectives on the board, which end up being two in opposite corners and one on top of the central ziggurat (I'm playing on the same table again).
I win the roll to go first, and deploy SPREAD out, since I HATE thunderfire cannons, but am hoping perhaps he will make a mistake in deploying. He deploys to counter, keeping everything out of 36" range.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590064_md-Chaos%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Salamanders%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Space%20Marines.JPG
He fails to seize, so I rush forward. My vindicator uses its searchlight to light up the bike squad at the edge of the board, and my blastmasters make it their priority. When the dust clears the bikers are all dead, giving me first blood, but the chapter master does not flee. Spawn and Maulerfiend charge the "keg", the secondary objective for which is, this time, to do enough wounds to it to move it off my left side board edge. Each wound is an inch. Charging spawn and maulerfiend manage only 4 wounds, with 3's to hit and 3's or 2's to wound. What. The. Hell.
His turn 1:
Here they come! Sternguard, flamer 10-squad, and vulkan with flamer 5 squad all land in front of me or behind my vehicles.
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590066_md-Chaos%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Salamanders%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Space%20Marines.JPG
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590065_md-Chaos%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Salamanders%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Space%20Marines.JPG
I'm expecting both vehicles to die, which they do. No big deal. Would have been nice for my maulerfiend to live, but that's a bit much to hope for.
What I did NOT expect was for my entire 10-man noisemarine squad on the right to EVAPORATE. Vulkan's squad got 12 hits, but 9 wounds against the marine squad, of which FIVE failed their saves and died. This left the other marine squad without much to shoot at, since their flamers went from covering 4 each to covering only a single marine with their flamer. Between the single flamer hit and 4 marines firing bolters.....
THE OTHER FIVE DIED TOO. My noisemarines were toast. This was not going to plan.
Thunderfire cannons kill a blastmaster out of the 10-man squad on the left, and do...not much else. I think the other targeted cultists, it couldn't really see elsewhere due to night fight. The chapter master made a go at my warlord with his orbital strike, but it scattered 12 inches and missed entirely.
My turn 2, the heldrake arrived (yay!). He killed 4 marines out of one combat squad with its vector strikes, then murdered the 5-man flamer combat squad that had finished off my noisemarines. Take that!
Cultists with chaos lord and noisemarines on the left shot and killed the sternguard's drop pod, as well as all of one sternguard combat squad and 4 out of 5 of the other. The remaining sergeant went to ground from the blastmaster's pinning effect. Edit: Actually the spawn charging is what finished off one of the sternguard squads, once the sergeant went to ground.
On the right, the cultists spit a storm of shots into vulkan's unit, killing all of them and doing 2 wounds to vulkan with noisemarine assistance. Go cultists!
With this, his right side and center were almost demolished. A single marine remained on the right, and one pinned sternguard. This game was going as planned - with all my AP3 ignoring cover, this was how things should be!
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590067_md-Chaos%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Salamanders%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Space%20Marines.JPG
http://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2014/3/3/590068_md-Chaos%2C%20Emperor%27s%20Children%2C%20Railhead%20Rumble%2C%20Salamanders%2C%20Slaanesh%2C%20Space%20Marines.JPG
His turn 2:
Both melta squads arrive. Oh well.
Both land on the right side while the one lone marine from the heldrake's vector striking shenanigans goes to join vulkan to prepare to charge the cultists. This is where things started to go south (although I guess technically losing 10 marines to like 18 wounds is also horrible).
His army is waaaaaaaay not built to handle fliers, yet with only 4 meltagun shots, my heldrake fails its invul save (0/6 for this game) and loses its baleflamer.
Well DAMMIT. This is an uphill battle now.
Thunderfire cannon on the left doesn't do much. It shoots at spawn and does some wounds, but also kills his last sternguard for me. It did, however, also wound the "keg" some, sending it back his way a little. Thunderfire cannon on the right snipes out a blast master from my 5-man squad that remains on the right. Vulkan charges cultists, who perform admirably with their overwatch and do 7 wounds.
But he saves them all, so meh. The real admirable part is that even though they lose by 5, they roll a 3 and stay in the fight. Go cultists!
My turn 3:
Well, losing the baleflamer is.....problematic. I already see that this will now be....hard. The entire right side of the board is hidden from me by the ziggurat, and the damage potential on that side just...isn't there. Not without a heldrake.
The heldrake flies left, vector striking the keg to send it back over a bit. Lord and cultists also shoot keg, sending it further left. A squad of noisemarines with nothing else to shoot at moves over, aiming for the middle objective (it'll be a scrap in the center!). Spawn move to engage a combat squad of meltaguns. Remaining 3 noisemarines on the right side move around to charge in and help the cultists.
Shooting kicks the keg over a few inches while one blastmaster from the 5-man squad remaining on the left not only blows up a drop pod, but kills a marine from each squad, with the explosion killing a couple more. Hooray!
In assault, the lord and cultists charge the keg. I would have also charged it with my remaining 9 noisemarines in the large squad on the left.
But they rolled triple 1's. The damn thing was 3" away. DAMMIT. The lord and buddies do a lot of wounds, though, and send it shunting off left. In combat my cultist champion challenges vulkan, who kills him, and my noisemarines bounce harmlessly off the remaining marine. Cultists stay in the fight. Spawn charge combat squad, kill 2, and take a few wounds in return.
His turn 3:
Chapter master moves forward and charges cultists. Thunderfire cannon shoots at 9 noisemarines heading for the center objective. They're strung out in a line, so they won't take much damage, right?
WRONG. Despite only causing about 8 hits total from good scatters, the squad loses all but two of its members. I'm absolutely astounded. Since they were strung out, and where the blasts were placed, there would be no way they could ever get to the middle now. DAMMIT. Ugh. Alright....
In combat, my noisemarine champion has to challenge vulkan, who butchers him. My marines fail to kill the one space marine in his unit, who responds by killing one of mine. My cultists are here to save the day, though, and with a storm of attacks finish off the last marine. The combat is lost, however, and the cultists all flee off the table, even though vulkan cannot pursue them due to the remaining 1 noisemarine. Spawn do really well and score 11 wounds on the 3 marines they are fighting - but only 2 die. Urgh.
Chapter master shakes off a staggering number of wounds due to overwatch, followed by also shrugging off a good number of S3 attacks by the same. Cultists all pile in.
my turn 4:
Heldrake vector strikes the keg again, sending it over. Remaining 2 noisemarines from the formerly large squad on the left move over to charge the keg, while the 5-man squad that remains moves for the objective. If I can move and get a good run next turn, maybe I can contest it. Here's hoping. They shoot the keg to kick it over a little more, since they have no targets.
The 2 noisemarines charge the keg, sending it 1" closer to the edge. In combat my lord challenges his chapter master. With 5 rerolls available from cultists, I can't scratch him, and take a wound in return.
the one last noisemarine on the right manages to wound and kill vulkan, who kills him as well. Well... there's one thing, I guess. Heldrake in a brilliant display of too-late competence regenerates his hull point. Nice, dude. Where was that 5+ for the penetrating hit that neutered you? Spawn fail to hurt their space marine friend, who passes all of his saves.
His turn 4:
Not much to do. One thunderfire targets the keg. It does 2 wounds, and doesn't hurt my marines. The other thunderfire scatters 6" completely off its target (the other 5 man noisemarine squad) and manages a couple hits from scattered blasts, but nobody dies (yay).
A combat squad takes the objective in the center, while another charges into the spawn. The spawn die, though they killed three of the marines that charged in with an impressive display of (again) too-late competence.
In combat, my chaos lord cannot scratch the chapter master YET AGAIN, and despite the rerolls from his cultist cheerleaders fails two saves and dies. The cultists flee, but are not chased down.
My turn 5:
Heldrake flies off the board, trying to vector strike a thunderfire cannon for moral victory.
Cultists regroup. They will try to shoot the keg. I have no hope of getting the primary now that the spawn have been slain and can't contest an objective, so I need to go for secondary to try to maintain some points in the tournament.
2 noisemarines move to shoot and charge the keg. Remaining 5-man squad abandons their shot at the objective in the center to also shoot the keg.
Cultists fail horribly (2 sixes from 32 shots) and move the keg very little. The noisemarines that fired also did little. The remaining 2 noisemarines from the squad that got thunderfire-murdered charge to do their last bit of damage, but don't move it far enough.
This is where we made a mistake, as we suddenly forgot turn order and thought he had gone first. I rolled to continue the game at the end of my turn 5, rather than his, which actually kind of screwed me. Since the noisemarines that had charged the keg had not actually caused it to move far enough to be out of base to base, I would have had a couple more shots to maybe knock it off. But then again he would have had thunderfire cannons and the like to kick it back his way, so I doubt it would have made much difference.
Game end, the two objectives and the scattered cultists on the left.

Results:
Primary - LOSS. two objectives to zero, both get slay the warlord, I got first blood.
Secondary - TIE. Neither of us were able to kick the keg off the table. But I got it so close!
Tournament final results:
My round 5 opponent took the victory for best general with the highest number of battle points. I had 84 out of a possible 100, and he had 94 out of 100. My dice betrayed me!
BUT, as it turns out, between my very high battle points, sportsmanship, and my army's lustrous paint job *ahem ahem* I managed to end up with First place best overall. Go chaos!
Had a blast at this tournament, and it was very nice (and most agreed) to see codex space marines (not white scars even!) and chaos space marines (not even nurgle with zombies and multiple heldrakes, even!) on the top table at the end.
Hope you all enjoyed reading!

Well congrats on your performance you seemed to have done really well despite not winning it all. Only gripe is with how little terrain there appeared to be.

Every table had the required total coverage, but there was not always a large LOS blocking piece on most of the tables.
Its very hard to get together so much terrain though so i didnt feel bad about it.
I did feel bad for a few guys that had to go up againgst tau and dark eldar however (i never played em).

Yes that's what I meant sorry. It seemed the first few tables were great but down to the end there it looked like a Dreadnought could see over the middle.

Im disapointed i didnt get to play any of the chaos players during the tournament.
We had a rather large spread of army types, but unfortunately I ended up playing againgst 2 marine players in the 4 games i played (and i was using marines myself).

Nice batrep and congrants on the tourney win!
It was a great tournament, this was my first time to go as I just moved back to Dallas.
I was really hoping to play against Chaos and the new Nids, but didnt ge to face either. I did however face tau, eldar, and taudar for 3 of my games and that was about what I expected. They are just so strong now that its of no suprise.
I am glad to see Chaos walked away with the prize just to spice it up.

Congrats on the win and thanks for sharing.
Curious what you thought of the mission setup. Seems like they were using something similar to Dust, with a bidding scheme and whatnot. The keg interaction looked interesting and fun as well.

I like the bonus missions overall. Its acctually quite difficult to get perfect 20 point games unless you are trouncing your opponent and that makes the tourny results alot closer the whole way through. It also allows an opponent who has no way to win the primary make sure he gets some points by soley focusing on the bonus. If for example, you had no scoring units and you were running an objectives mission for both scoring and primary, you would have no chance of winning either. At least with 2 of the keg bonus missions you would still be able to win, and with the third could force a draw.

I like the secondary as well. If you focus on and win the secondary, you get 8 points while your opponent gets 16. That's not that big of a divide between you and makes it anyone's game by the end.
I really liked the bidding. But I wish rolling highest meant you picked last instead of first.

And probably fly back and forth in your back field until the heldrake shows up.

Yeah. Like I said - I know that, I just had my brain completely shut down for our game. 2 minutes after we shook hands I thought "... Why didn't I do THIS?! Or THIS?!? I coulda won that game!"
Ah well. It'll just make a rematch sweeter.

I made a few mistakes as well, though i dont think mine were why i lost.
Won my first 2 games, then went up againgst a list that hard countered mine. I still almost won that one.
Fourth game i had no chance due to cron air getting last turn. There was literally no chance for me to win that game once my scoring units were dead.

I'm thinking of how the list can be improved. Almost debating taking another vindicator over the maulerfiend, for more shooty template goodness. Also is a better solution to things like terminators and broadsides. The maulerfiend made it into combat ONCE in the entire tournament, and that was against tyranids.
edit: And that was after the game was already essentially done, as it just charged and finished off some termagants.

Vindicators are Tentaclid bait--trolling over. I definitely feel 2 Vindis would function better in your army. Where your Mauler ties up units, the Vindi removes them. It also allows you to be more selective with your blast master shots.

Agreed. Aside from the fact that the game was pretty much over, I was never afraid of the Maulerfiend. My original goal was to tarpit it with the gants and then ignore it.

We played a game Tues before Railhead and this is exactly what happened. A second Vindi would have blown through my two blobs. A second Vindi would also have given him another chance at insta-gibbing a crone, zoan and biovore turn 1.

True, although the maulerfiend did tie up your entire termagant squad the whole game. That is the one thing I like about it - while some people might complain that "oh a fearless blob will tie it up all game" that's kind of the idea - the way I see it, the maulerfiend will pin down a large fearless blob all game, preventing it from grabbing objectives and, more importantly, keep them from doing what my very own blobs of cultists do - pump tons and tons of dice into people. Especially in the case of, say, devilgants. I would much rather have a maulerfiend tie them up than have to face some 20+ S3 shots come the way of my cultists or even my noisemarines.
I'll try experimenting with it, if anyone local wishes to let me try it out
It's great against larger targets (also requires more effort from things like broadside blobs and wave serpents) but I just wonder how well it handles swarms. Killing 7 out of 30 gaunts on a good shot leaves 23 gaunts to kill me :(
Although against some firepower-heavy opponents, it also allows me to put them in reserves, to come out blazing and prevent the loss of my vehicles like against my last opponent. Hell once his sternguard landed he had all of two combi and two regular meltaguns in his entire army. I'll try this.
Also a reason to paint another vindicator. Yay progress!
