As a Black Templar player the Land Raider Crusader has a special meaning for me, both fluffwise as well as gamewise (crusader squads can only take the LRC as dedicated transport).
Any method of avoiding a LR occupying a valuable HS slot is good in my books.
However, other LR variants can be selected as dedicated transports if you are fielding Terminators or Centurions, for example. You can even let your normal marines ride in them - they just cant start the game aboard them. Alternately, in smaller point games where you arent out of HS slots yet, you can simply take them as a regular HS choice and have almost any of your squads start the game in them.
In any case, the more I look at the regular Land Raider, the more I begin to like it - if there's one thing the Space Marines can never have enough, it is BS4 Lascannons. TL-BS4 Lascannons are that much sweeter. And with the Land Raider Phobos you get two of them. Because in the current codex the Land Raider Phobos has gained the ability to take a Multi-Melta, this weapon is now no longer exclusive to the Crusader and Redeemer. Since it is a pintle mounted weapon, it can be fired along with one TL-LC at any tank and, if that tank happens to have the misfortune to have the LR Phobos facing it, both TL-LCs and the MM can be fired at it - so taking the MM adds nicely to more AT firepower - even at >12" range, a S8 AP1 shot is still pretty awesome. Add in a HK-missile and your Phobos now really has the capability to wreak face (of enemy armor) in a single turn of shooting. Unfortunately, the Phobos only has a transport capacity of 10 models, so you can't take a full squad AND an IC - this becomes more evident in terms of terminators as unlike regular Space Marines, their minimum occupation size is 10 models, so no IC to lead them whatsoever.
The Redeemer is another story. This tank is not only the cheapest in terms of points cost compared to the other two (to put things in perspective, so cheap that you can throw in for free the Extra Armor vehicle upgrade to bring it back to the cost of the other two), it also has the best side sponsons in terms of raw damage they can cause *IF* they get in range. But that shouldnt be too much of a problem since you are transporting guys with this tank anyway. S6 AP3 ignores cover flamer - and you get two of them - and both can target different squads - means that once the Redeemer reaches enemy lines, it can start eating the enemy army all on its own, if there are no enemy melta weapons nearby, while for example the crusader merely provides fire support.
But then again, the LRC's firepower output is also pretty solid - 1 TL-AC and 2 Hurricane Bolters at 12" range can still ruin the day of any squad caught in the crossfire, and obviously the Crusader is the best of the bunch when it comes to snapfiring (after having moved 12" and/or when targeting a flyer) due to the insane amount of re-rolls you get..

I am a fan of the original Phobos. The rules don't quite reflect how this tank should work but the idea of a mobile gunship bunker assault tank is appealing

The Land Raider Redeemer is arguably the worst, but I find it so much more fun and interesting to play with. Roasting an entire squad of marines in one shot in satisfying.

I agree. The damage potential of a Land Raider Redeemer is immeasurable. While you can never expect the Crusader to do anything amazing with its Hurricans Bolters but merely cause a handful of additional wounds at best, the Phobos can at least take down a tank with a lucky shot. But if the opponent is out of tanks, youre out of luck.
The Redeemer can vaporize entire squads of MEQ or send them running; it's gonna have a field day at the enemy's gunline if there are no meltas nearby. Arguably the Redeemer is the only tank that can actually be used to annihilate enemy squads which would otherwise have been the task of the Land Raider's payload. So now you have two dangerous units cleaning house over at the enemy's deployment zone instead of one with support.

I have gotten to love my Readermer. It actually has out performed my other two constanly.
In one game I got it in a position two place both Flamers, the Storm Bolter and Heavy Bolter into a Squad of Chaos Marines. The Muiti-Melta then took out a Chaos Dread. That exposion kill off most of another Squad of Chaos Marines.

I like the regular one. The crusader is just a glorified rhino, and a redeemer is a glorified rhino that has weapons you're never going to hit anyone with.
I'm not going to spend 250 points on something that serves no other purpose than getting a unit from point A to point B, especially if that unit is, say, terminators, who come with deepstrike for free.
The regular land raider at least comes with serious dakka to put wounds on stuff and isn't COMPLETELY wasted if you're not charging straight forwards with it.

Just wanted to point out that any unit can begin the game in a vehicle with Transport capacity. Pg. 121 of BRB. Under Deploying Transport Vehicles: "Units can be deployed in Transport Vehicles if you wish-simply declare to your opponent which units are embarked where as part of your deployment. However, if a unit is a dedicated transport, only the unit it was selected with (plus and Independent Characters that have joined the unit) can deploy within it. After the game begins, other units can embark and disembark as normal"
Back to the topic though, as a BT player myself I also have a soft spot for the Crusader variant

For me it depends on which codex I'm using. I have gotten a lot of mirage out of BA redeemers. Effective St rushing forward and applying pressure. Where as my G crusader has stood midfield in many games mowing down enemy troops and preventing them from getting and objectives.

it depends on what im fighting against but i mainly go for the crusader. as a DA player i like getting in close with knights and DS a bunch of death wing in surrounding support, using Bikes with homers on them. but hey thats just a personal preference.
but you cant beat a decent LR 14 all round is something no player ever wants to see coming at them... especially 3 of them full to the brim with knights belial azreal and command squads... but hey thats just how Apoc goes for me

I think perhaps "assault vehicle" here is one important difference between rhino/teleportation and a landraider.
Anyway, because I want to get up close and personal to let loose the warriors in an assault, I really like the redeemer.
It makes alot of sense to have multimelta, assaultcannon and flamers on that kind of vehicle.
I dont really get why you would want lascannons on an assault whicle.

Do lascannons have a minimum range? Last I checked you could still blow stuff up with them even if you were close to what you sent your cargo against. Also, that multimelta would rather appreciate closing range as well.
Meanwhile, an assault vehicle is still an assault vehicle, even in a counterattack role. It's also still an assault vehicle even if it makes more sense to sit still and shoot lascannons for the first few turns of the game.
Without serious firepower, you're pidgeonholing a 250 point transport into exactly one role - and a role that is made rather pointless by units that have deepstrike, or can buy a rhino at a ninth the cost.
It's often worthwhile to spend big points on powerful specialists. Spending big points on a few bolters and a requirement to charge, though, doesn't really qualify.

I like taking a Land Raider Phobos when ferrying around a squad of Grav Centurions.
The AT firepower of the raider (+MM, +HK) provides a nice contrast to the extreme anti-MEQ/TEQ firepower provided by the Grav Cents.
It'll also make taking the 3 MLs unnecessary and I can instead keep the Hurricane Bolters to make light infantry think twice about getting within 12".

I am going with the LRC. I run a couple for each of my SM & GK armies. First off, I like guns and it has a lot of them! What is not to love about a large tank with 12 machine guns and 2 gatling guns aesthetically? Up close it is punishing too! With my GKs it is even more powerful once psibolt ammo and Fortitude are taken into account.
