I'd like to use a Chaplain as my HQ. It would be using Black Templar chapter tactics. I have narrowed down the type of squad to put him in to the following:
15 man Crusader squad in a LRC
Or
10 man Vanguard squad with jump packs
Do one of these squads stand out over the other? Rest of the army will be a mix of drop pods, flyers and artillery.

Any reason for the Crusaders?
Fluff?
AV14 tank?
Scoring unit?

The vv's neatest trick - deepstrike and assault - has been taken away from them, otherwise I only see them as an expensive assault squad with expensive gear.
That's honestly the only reason I say crusaders, as vv's just don't seem worth it for what they do.

I second the Crusader choice, a 15-man blob + the chaplain will pump out in the surroundings of 45 rerollable hits on the charge...

Looks like its Crusaders in Crusaders.
On a related note, do you think the Chaplain is good enough or would a Captain be better? I lose the rerolls but gain some extra attacks and weapon options. Also makes for a more durable Warlord.

Personally I love chaplains, simply for the rerolls. They arent bad in combat, you just dont use them as a beatstick as much as a captain thats decked out.

If you want a cheap boost in CC punch, get the EC. He's not great, but will ensure your Chaplain stays out of challenges and adds AP2 strikes at initiative.

Or a captain/ CM along with the chaplain/crusaders instead ^^
The str 7 ap2 sword is pretty neet or shield eternal for that fact.

The best way to use a chaplain is either a LRC with a bunch of crusaders for a decent and (relatively) cheap assault unit, or in a storm raven with a beatstick CM and 10 honor guard. Give the chappy a PF to go with his maul, and watch the unit disintegrate anything it touches.

I was thinking 1750-2k. I only run 1 HQ for 1500.

At that many points you can grab a secound land raider to have a CM and honor guard along depends if you want to go on a full assault list tough.

Seems like the CM & HG is ending up to be the new Assault Terminator option. The default overkill SM assault remedy to everything.

Not everything. I'd still take TH/ SS Termies if your problem is an MC.

If your problem is an MC I don't see why you would assault it in the first place.
Using a land raider to run a squad of termies up to an MC to punch it to death seems like a very inefficient usage of points. Space Marines live in a world with grav guns now.

HERESY! what are these grav guns? i can't hear it over the awesome sound of powered melee weapons! Stay true to the Chains and bolters my fellow crusaders!
Nah srsly in competive way go grav bikes... but when you play a BT army in the first place you obviously don't bother about being competive. So smack their faces!

True but I could see the idea of pushing an assault threat into their center and forcing them to deal with that threat.

When talking about escorts for Black Templar Chaplains and Honor Guard, we're not talking competitive. Otherwise this would be a thread about White Scars Grav-Command Squads on bikes.

When talking about escorts for Black Templar Chaplains and Honor Guard, we're not talking competitive. Otherwise this would be a thread about White Scars Grav-Command Squads on bikes. I don't agree with that, as there's varying degrees of competitive. Sure, bikes on top of bikes with everything bikes with thunderfire cannons backing them up might be the most competitive list for SM, but there is still a hierarchy of how competitive units are below the most optimal. Case in point, bikes with meltas might be the most efficient way to kill a tank, but that doesn't mean that a lascannon dev squad wouldn't be a more efficient AV unit than, say, a scout squad with krak grenades. Similarly, I'm not saying that you shouldn't bother using assault units. What I'm saying is that some assault builds and tactics are more efficient than others. Putting a termy squad in a land raider and pushing them up the board to go MC hunting isn't very points efficient, even from a non-competitive standpoint. But a crusader squad with a chaplain and two power axes is relatively cheap and will murder anything short of a walker or an MC on the charge.

A 15-man Crusader Squad with 2 Axes is 230 points. 5 TH/SS Terminators is 225.

The TH/ SS Terminators are a much bigger threat to pretty much anything that isn't a horde. It's more of a "better against almost everything" vs. "scoring" situation TBH.
