www.magcraft.com The disc mags 0.125"(3.2mm) diameter by 0.063" (1.6mm) thick might be the right size.

I had used the size I listed in the previous post for my wolf guard termies. At the time I didn't know if I could drill holes in them to set the mags inside. Now I know for the next time.

The size I posted should be a good size to start but what parts are you planning to magnetize? The link to the main site has different sizes as well.

I use 4x1mm magnets for dread weapons, everything on a stormraven, riptide, hammerheads and even terminators. Haven't done my landraider but I'm going to retrofit them in the near future.

Do you have a tape measure / ruler?

3/1 mm magnet means 3mm round, 1 mm thick.

Measure where you want to magnetize your troops and see if a 3mm magnet will fit safely inside of them, if not they will ruin your model.

If you only have 2mm space, order 2mm/1mm magnets. Then pickup a 2mm drill.

I used 4mm x 4mm round magnets for my dreads.
I used a 4mm wood drill bit turned by hand to make the holes.
In the future I will use a counter-sunk, self-tapping, steel screws on the arms so polarity isn't an issue & screws are cheaper than magnets!

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!!

Any drill bits will work. Just go to the hardware store. If you want really nice bits, look for HSS (High Speed Steel) bits. And no, you can't just use your hands. You will need a Pin Vice to hold the bit.

Er - I managed just fine doing it by hand.
Also this is a wood bit:

As you can see, there is a small point in the centre. This makes drilling holes accurately so much easier than using a HSS bit IMO.
It's also plenty sharp enough to deal with plastic & resin.

I just googled 'wood drill bit'.
For myself I bought a complete kit for about £20 which has wood bits, HSS bits, masonry bits, screw driver heads, some hollow core wood bits (not the correct name but I don't know what they're actually called) & a bunch of rawl plugs. Might be some more stuff.
It all came in a steel tool box which I now use to transport my undead which have magnetic bases.
You should be able to buy a set on wood bits for $10 or so quite easily - just check you local hardware store.

thats amazing, the wood bits work well against plastic ?
im going to look into it!!

could you give me the optimal sizes for magnets and drill bits to match in your opinion for :

-terminators
-landraiders
-dreadnoughts

im looking at aot of peoples magnet work online and they seem to use squares and disks and this and that and all in different sizes so its kinda confusing.

it all depends on what EXACTLY you are magnetizing, also a lot of it is personal preference (that is, you will have to practice and see what you like).

For example, I use 1/8" diameter magnets on my terminator arms. Some people might PREFER a slightly larger or smaller size. But around that size works for most.

On a dreadnought - are you magnetizing the arms? or some other piece of war gear?
For small pieces of wargear (hk missiles on iron clads for example) I use he 1/8" magnets.
But for arms, I use stronger 1/4" diameter magnets (so they don't droop).

Regarding land raiders, what part are you trying to magnitize?
A sponson? A missile? A search light?

Also, the drill bit size to "match" your magnet...is that exact size. If you use 3mm magnets, you want 3mm drill bits.
You should be able to pick up the drill bits at any hardware type store.

For non-infantry, I generally use 1mm x 3mm or 1/16 x 3/16 magnets. n52 when possible.

For infantry, I want 1mm x 2mm.
