I envision something like from pacific rim except different colors and more of a helmet rather that a face shield. Something sleek. If you guys could use a model to represent a pilot..what would you use?

Probably something like an Elysian Guardsman to be honest.

Imperium doesn't really... do sleek.

Probably would look similar to these guys.

I saw them and thought the same. But it didn't sit well with me reading the codex and wikia full.

Hmmm for some reason I thought knight titans were like Dreadnoughts where the pilots were interred in the cockpit forever. So I imagined the whole naked electrodes and wires thing as well.

I would imagine they wouldn't wear much armor.

Because if something punches through the armor of your giant walker robot, odds are good it's gonna punch through you too.

So maybe flak armor, to help with shrapnel from blown-apart metal?

And of course a nice, good-fitting helmet, because that thing's gonna be knocked around a lot and concussions make for bad thinking.

Maybe a personal refractor field? I'd imagine that Knight pilots aren't as expendable as your average Guardsman.

Refractor fields are only really effective against energy weapons, so probably not one of those.

It's a giant robot, powered by Emperor-knows-what. When it starts getting torn to pieces, it's gonna start arcing electricity and random energy stuff everywhere.

Although if it's powered by a nuclear reactor, the refractor field might not help. How good is Imperial medicine with dealing with radiation poisoning?

Depends on the world. Knight world? Probably pretty good.

I suppose it might Star Trek a bit. Consoles explode, you know!

Yeah, the pilot is not encased in it forever. So def not neked. They hook up to it through some nerolink. When they are not fighting they handle political stuff. Think voltron...they go to a throne, hook into it, then they are transported to the cockpit of the knight. The knight is stored in a huge warehouse.

There is a story in the codex of a knight pilot in plate armour.

They are knights. Real knights wear plate armour.
This is what they wear:

It's the Imperium. It might very well be.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Most likely, Knight pilots wear a style of light powered armor more in line with Sororitis armor, ie, the same body glove, light plate, minor power assist at joints. My reasoning on this is that the technology exists, has been available since before the Knight worlds were founded, and appear to be common technology even in the current setting techno-barbarisms.

Fear the might of his Powered Codpiece! Your armor is meaningless.

Uh, Sororitas don't have 'light' power armour. They have power armour, just without the tactile response and autosenses (their helmet auspex is manual).

Try reading my post again. I said a style of light power armor in line with Sororitas armor. I did not say "they wear Sororitas armor because it is light armor." My point is that a Knight-class Titan is the pilot's armor, yet the pilot still needs life support and a minimal set of padding to survive getting slammed around inside the cockpit. Power armor in 40k starts with a body glove the provides the cooling, compression, and basic protection of the wearer, to which plates and power assist are added. Power assist in this case is to provide to pilot with support to counter any extreme jarring motion of the Knight in combat. Any "plate" added would probably be no better than carapace, more likely "flak" level of protection so as not to burden the pilot overly. By no means am I saying Sororitas armor is "light" power armor, but Noble pilot armor probably is.

One reason Mecha in the size range Knights are in, the 10 meter / 11 yard / 33 foot tall range of height, don't really work in practicle reality is because if the Mech falls, the crew will die from the impact without major systems in place to absorb or redirect the energy of the impact. Smaller Mecha such as Sentinels or Dreadnoughts are short enough the crew might get concussed, yet should be able to walk away. Building size Titans such as Reavers and Warlords are big enough to have space for dedication dampening systems to reduce crew injuries, which we see in the "bobbing Head on a bomb neck" design of Imperial Battle Titans. Scout Titans, such as Warhounds and Knights are in that range of height where a fall is lethal to the crew without some form of dampening system. In the Knights case, a form of power assist pilot armor, latched on to the control Throne, and tied into the motion control of the vehicle could provide such dampening without sacrficing space to a dedicated system (something a Warhound could do while a Knight might be too small for).
