I'm actually quite surprised that the new SAG looks so much like the old one. Sure, it's plastic, and since I don't have the old one, I'll probably get it (If the rules are good). However, much like the re-releases of so many of the other models (Hellbrute comes to mind) I would have expected a much more inspired repose or maybe some upgrades to the general art direction.
I dunno. I like the new one, but no more than the old one really.

How much could they really change and have it still feel like a SAG? I'm fine with it being an update without changing much.

Seems like a waste of time. I like the model but it is so close to the one I already own. Wish they had spent the time on something new. Oh well.....I'll take one.

There's a lot that I like about BOTH models. Overall I think I prefer my old one.
Old model: I love the facial expression of the Mek. I love the huge bundle of wires going into the whirly bit more than the "cabled" look of the new gun. I also like the whirly bit itself more. I can't say I'm that huge a fan of the static electricity effect of the new gun. It's cool... but I'm not totally sold on it.
New model: I LOVE the grot going into the vacuum tube, how his legs are being stretched and twisted to make it look like he's being sucked into a black hole. It's so awesome! I'm also a big fan of how the Big Mek himself has a lot more wires and cables for the gun snaking all over his torso. It makes him look much more like he's actually plugged into the gun himself.
I might be a little bit attached to the old model since it's the first Ork HQ model I ever painted, and I'm a bit proud of how it turned out in the end.

Well, I'm no artist, and certainly no sculptor, but off the top of my head, I'd say they could have gone with something underslung, with a hopper on the Mek's back with an iron cage over the top of it, with snotlings clinging to the bars.... Actually, though I am no artist, nor a sculptor, I am a fair kitbasher, maybe I'll do just that!

Could be the paint job. The Borkanaught has a lot more texture going on than the clean paint job it was given would suggest after all.
It's like the person who did the models isn't up on how to paint Orks well.

Lots of other people are asking the same question, and the consensus seems to be "it's probably staying the same".
In other words, we won't know for sure until we get the codex.

Here's what we know about the new SAG rules:
- Still AP2
- Still Large Blast
- Still 2D6 Strength roll
- Still chance for misfires, zany wacky things can go wrong.
Right now the only thing we don't know is what the misfire mechanic is going to be. Are they going to keep the same exact table as before? Are they going to introduce a new misfire chart instead? Personally I'd advocate for something simpler for the SAG gun chart. Any roll of doubles for strength, then roll on a 1D6 misfire chart. It's an additional dice roll, but at the same time the chart wouldn't take up half a page.
But anyways that's just wishlisting on my part. What's above is what is actually CONFIRMED.

I think it's the fact that all other orks tend to have an overdeveloped philtrum area on the face, whilst this fellow doesn't seem to have anything going on there. See the ork boy in the background in that shot and look at the extended area between the eyes/nose area and the beginning of the mouth. That part has always been somewhat extended in GW's orc/orks yet here is totally missing. As though someone described an ork face to the sculptor over the phone.
Whilst it's not the end of the world and we have lots and lots of options from GW and others to replace it with, again, given the very high cost we're being asked for, it ain't great.

My Morkanaught made up his points the one game I played. He provided a KFF to kans and trukks nearby, killed a rhino shooting, ran over a squad of plague marines with plasmas that were ripping apart my trukks in close combat and finished up by killing a squad of CSM with a sorcerer.
My opponent started to shoot at it, but then didn't bother after turn 1. I'd say they are worth the points in the right army. I was happy with it.

Some people are thinking we might get something in the next WD (Not the one coming out tomorrow with the new artillery, but the one after that). It will have Oddboyz such as painboyz, weirdboyz and probably big meks and supposedly an ork batrep. Im doubtful we will get anything then, probably the week after that.
Also im hoping we get the SAG rules next week when they hopefully talk about meks.

The new SAG model is strange - I really despise the head, it's too flat and square for me, but the rest of the model is pretty fantastic. I miss the look of the old one just hoovering up snotlings and squigs, but the black hole effect is very interesting and really matches how the SAG works. Best part about it is that it looks like it can be kitbashed with the Nobz/Flash gits because of that "clamshell" body, so I'll probably be getting one for conversion purposes.
Mek guns could be better, but easy to magnetise and scratchbuild more chassis. However, I wish GW redid the "old" big guns in another plastic kit instead of still selling each for 30 bucks.

For the price, and with the extra bitz included in the Mek Gun, it might be worth looting an Eldar support weapon or two, and replacing the barrel tips with parts from the Mek Gun. Add some grot crew, and add it into the gun battery.

In the one game I used it the gorkanaut killed 2 mauler fiends and a helbrute, but it was the transport part that got the biggest thumbs up. My opponent forgot twice that there were burnas inside. The burnas killed a unit of summoned deamons as well as a unit of cultists.

I'm not judging any more models again... I was all judgmental about the Imperial Guard stuff, then I got my hands on the kits, they are superb! So any of these new Ork models already loook amazing to me. IMO
I'm really digging the way GW is banging out the kits and books!

They're a pretty good match for all 28mm wargame models, especially greenskins. I think Kromlech will be getting quite a few sales thanks to GW's bad pricing decisions for the mkek gunz, especially Kromlech also design some 'energy weapon' variants
