I've played space marines since day 1, but never painted an ultramarine, so I thought I'd try my hand at it.

Good looking ultramarine. He looks like he's been in battle for awhile. Did you use a Nulin Oil over him? The blue shade looks really good and smooth from what I can tell. Only thing that jumped out at me, because i did the same thing on my marines is the gold edges look kinda dull and that one spot on his shoulder where it was attached. Aside from those nit-picky thing he looks great!

Do you basecoat your models?
I only ask because it looks like there's some bare plastic showing through at some points. Basecoating would help you to establish a better colour.

I was thinking that or to reorder your painting steps. I could be wrong, but it looks like the wash was one of the last steps done. I would suggest taking your chosen armor color and doing a clean up after the wash. It will help make the model look cleaner.

Agreed on this one.
It should go:
Basecoat (black/white)
Armour basecoat (dark blue)
Wash (black)
Armour layer (whatever chosen blue you want it to be)
Armour highlight (a slightly lighter blue)
Finished, unless you want to add steps inbetween. You can cut out the armour highlight, it's not necessary but it does look damn good.

I don't think this model got a wash, I think that's a black drybrush over parts of the armor as one of the last steps. I remember trying that way back in the day on one of my first models and getting the same result. Should definitely use a Nuln Oil wash instead to get a better shaded look.

It looks to smooth to be a drybrush, I think it's just a heavy wash that's sat on the surfaces because it hasn't been spread properly
