Gwar lead singer Dave Brockie died Sunday, his manager said Monday. Brockie was 50.
"His body was found Sunday by his band mate at his home in Richmond, Virginia," Gwar manager Jack Flanagan said in a statement on the group's website.
An autopsy will be done to determine why he died, Flanagan said.
His heavy metal band formed in 1984, billing itself as "Earth's only openly extra-terrestrial rock band." Brockie performed as Gwar's frontman under the persona of "Oderus Urungus."

The band was based on a mythology of an "elite group of chaos warriors" who "ravaged the galaxy" until they were "banished to the most insignificant planet in the universe ... the seething mud ball known as Earth."
"My main focus right now is to look after my band mates and his family," Flanagan said.
"More information regarding his death shall be released as the details are confirmed."
Never really listened to their music. Saw him on Red Eye a couple of times, and saw them do a cover of Carry On My Wayward Son (which I thought they did a real gakky job of).
It's a shame though. Always a shame when you go to early.
I believe at least one of them was a Warhammer guy.
At a Games Day many years ago (early/mid '90s when it was at the upper level of the Baltimore Convention Center), a GW staffer pointed out a guy walking by and told me he was in GWAR. Now, I don't know for a fact that it was accurate info, but it was plausible if you saw him and the GW guy was 100% sure.
Oh, he was an awesome guy. A friend of mine is really close with the band, and she's taking the news really hard. Hell, that's two members in three years that have passed now. Mega bummer :/
Terrible loss for metalheads everywhere. GWAR showed us you could be brutal, bloody, and hilarious.
I guess Dave finally lost the battle for his soul with the daemon Odrous, and has gone beyond the stars for an eternity of debacherous slaughter.
We were once so close to heaven, St. Peter came out and gave us medals; declaring us "The nicest of the damned".

While sad I wouldn't say it's a terrible loss for metal as I don't see the band ever being a major influence or innovator to the genre like Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Motorhead, Slayer, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Judas Priest, Soundgarden, Jimi Hendrix, Queen, Rush, etc were/are.

One can be a big part of a community without being a major influence or innovator. All those bands you listed except 3 were from the seventies, some even from the sixties. It's hard to innovate in a genre that is fifty years old. Unless you're Rage Against the Machine. They gave us nu-metal.
Damn kids and their skateboards and their internets... back in my day if you wanted to know if a band was good or not you had to buy a CD!
