My secret fortress at the base of the volcano!

VI is the best FF game. This is a scientifically demonstrable fact. It had the best soundtrack (3 CDs of music and the majority of it is excellent) it had the most epic storyline (fight the evil empire, accidentally blow up the world, break up the band, put the band back together, then save the world) it had the best characters with the best individual storylines, and the best exploits (cast invisibility on a boss, followed by x-zone for an instant win). It was the best of the best.

It even had an opera that didn't suck.

Not to disparage the other games. Well, okay, I'll disparage VIII. That one bit. But the others had their good points.

IV had the best scripted dungeons. You had exactly the right party members for each dungeon so that the challenge was never too hard or too easy, and you got good character moments out of it, too. Even the utterly useless bard got to be useful once (he wasn't actually in the party at the time, but it still counts). IV had good music, too, just not as much of it as VI.

FFI laid the foundations and without it, we wouldn't have anything else in the series to play, so props to it.

VII introduced a whole new generation to FF, so despite its shorcommngs, I respect it for that (and the Cosmo Canyon and Cid's theme music, too). Also, it perma-killed a player character. That had never happened to us before (V doesn't count because very few in the US played V prior to VII). Coming from the almost comical series of character "deaths" in IV, I must confess I actually laughed out loud when Aeris got run through on disc 1. I started to feel bad about that on disc 4 when I realized she wasn't coming back...

XI was the first multiplayer FF game, and I love it for letting *me* be the Red Mage. It had its flaws (level grind was worse than Hitler) but it was a beautiful game, with a solid old-school feel, and Red Mages. Red Mages make everything better.

After XI, Square stopped releasing FF games. Or at least, that's what I tell myself so I can sleep at night.

I was tied between advance tactics or final fantasy 5. Which undoubtedly had my most favorite villian (Gilgamesh and Exdeath, hell my profile pic is Exdeath.)

I have played VII, VIII, IX, X, X2 and some old ones, but I don't remember which ones those were. Out of those VIII is actually my favourite. Listening to the soundtrack as I post.

Psst...

There's a new one out. It's XIV. If you were willing to play a FF MMORPG, you might want to check it out!

Kinda weird that they skipped over XII and XIII in the numbering, though. I'm not sure what SE was thinking when they did that.

7 still my fav. Been playing the X-HD release since it came out, I know I've already done more then when I owned the game for the PS2. I'm really hoping they get around to doing a 7 for today's generation.

The amount of money they'd make from that would probably be stupid.

I said XIV but that's kind of by default. I played VII for like... three hours and stopped, played X until I got to the first Blitzball game and then stopped, and played a free trial of XI but decided I'd rather slam my fingers in a car door.

I like XIV, though, at least in its current form. Didn't play the first version because it sounded awful. I'm more of an MMO fan than an FF fan, though I guess it's obvious that I'm not a huge FF fan.

That means that you'll miss all of the call backs that the game is loaded with. But fortunately ARR is quite capable of standing on its own two feet.

Tactics and Tactics advance (and A2)

always loved those.

I also have a soft spot for 7.
