Few are the records that exist of The Sons of Amar and those that do are held by perhaps no more than half a dozen Inquisitors because for all intents and purposes they do not exist but to those of the highest authority. Born out of the turmoil following the Abyssal Crusades, the hellacious loss of loyal Marines and the surge in traitor numbers gave rise for the need for new Chapters to combat these threats. It was this need that drove the founding of The Sons of Amar under close scrutiny from the Ordo Hereticus. Every measure was taken to ensure that only the most unshakably devout would fill this Chapters ranks, for their purpose was no less than the annihilation of all who had forsaken the Emperor.

At the fringes of Segmentum Obsurus lies the Calix Sector. Far beyond the Drusus Marches is the planet Amar, shrouded within the stellar nebula of a long dead Halo Star. Amar holds orbit on the outer edge of a type F9 main sequence star's habitable zone and is accompanied by two small moons, Abelardus and Adelfonsus. Both moons are tidally locked with the planet and follow the same orbit, Abelardus leading Adelfonsus. Amar's atmosphere is well over twice the density of an average terrestrial planet its size, a result of it's heavy radioactive core causing high levels of geothermal activity. Water covers the planet's southern hemisphere almost entirely while the northern hemisphere is one large continent. An unbroken ring of forest pushes northward from the equator and covers nearly two-thirds of the landmass, hydrated by the multitude of rivers that flow from the planet's northern mountain glaciers. Grazing herbivores lumber through these woods and feed a number of super-carnivore species like massive Fellhounds, canine beasts capable of biting a man in half with ease, or the swamp-dwelling Pyretoads, amphibian predators whose saliva can dissolve ceramite. Even the Feral Orks that roam these sprawling forests are kept in check by the planet's relentless biosphere, their sporing young consumed by ravenous insects and parasitic fungi. It is the perfect training ground for an Astartes Chapter and it is here that The Sons of Amar fortress monastery stands, hidden from the eyes of men amongst a vast expanse of bleak, empty space.

---glory to the Emperor---

Welcome to my 40k plog. This Chapter has been my brainchild for years and I have more fluff than I know what to do with. Here's the plan.

-I have a rough 1,000 point list that is my primary goal for the time being. I say 'rough' because it includes IG allies and the Codex is due for a pretty heavy update so the list will likely change.
-Each major update will include fluff/backstory/character stories/etc based on the material I have/will be writing as the plog progresses.
-Photos will be updated once I have a more suitable camera, better lighting, and a backdrop.
-Progress may range from slow to rampant. My schedule is unusual and free time can be a luxury. I also cherish sleeping.

Each unit name in the following list is color coded based on completion status. I will update this as I make progress.

Key:
Red means work in progress.
Yellow means ready for paint.
Green means painting in progress.
Blue means the unit is COMPLETE!!!

So here is where everything stands so far.

=][= Sons of Amar; Adeptus Astartes =][=
Brother Captain Laskarus
Brother Librarian Calyx
Forge Master Gallus
Tactical Squad 'Nessus'
Tactical Squad 'Orion'
Scout Squad 'Obsidian'
Centurion Devastator Squad 'Daemos'
'Fellhound' pattern Dreadnaught

=][= Kyrallian 7th 'Watchmen'; Astra Militarum =][=
Lord Commissar 'Bane'
Vendetta Gunship 'Fair Maiden'
Veteran Squad 'Whiskey Nova'

Alright...pictures. As I mentioned these will be updated when I have a better camera and all that. For now my iPhone will have to do.

Brother Librarian Calyx, minor green stuffing required

Tactical Squad Nessus led by Veteran Sergeant Jorgan. Base coated Adeptus Battlegrey. Painting in progress.

Tactical Squad Orion led by Veteran Sergeant Selenus. Base coated Adeptus Battlegrey. Painting in progress.

Two of the five members of Scout Squad Obsidian including Veteran Sergeant Tyball, Master of Huntsmen. Base coated Adeptus Battlegrey.

Centurion Devestator Squad Daemos led by Veteran Sergeant Phalun. Deciding what I want to do with the additional armor pieces, want to give them a tank-hunter look.

Much of this is a salvage project right now. The only things I purchased to get this project moving were the Centurions and the Codex.

Cheers

I fiddled around with my first post to make it a little more shiny. This will be a fairly expansive project so I plan on adding an index for easier navigation when the time comes.

Although I don't have Militarum Tempestus yet I have started working on my allies, namely my Vendetta Gunship 'Fair Maiden'. Here she is so far.

Not much now, but progress is progress. I would like to ask some of the pro painters for pointers here. I want to paint a pin-up girl on 'Fair Maiden' and I have never done a freehand. Are there any good tips on how to do this simply and effectively?

Cheers

Well I was saving this guy for later, but it appears that my plog needs something a little more colorful

Meet Brother Captain Laskarus of House Sterling. Paint in progress. Fluff to come upon completion.

And one more of him during the conversion phase.

Let me explain what I mean by 'House Sterling'.

=][= The Sons of Amar; Chapter Structure =][=

A defining characteristic of The Sons of Amar is their lack of traditional Chapter organization. The Chapter is small by Astartes standards, consisting of six Errant Companies formally referred to as 'Houses'. Each House is a close-knit group of Battle Brothers and once a Scout has been assigned his House only death will sever his bond with it. A House does not have a number, rather each has its own unique heraldry. Individual squads are given free reign to personalize their insignia and these are added to the House's Coat-of-Arms. Each Errant Company is structured to be capable of independent action as opposed to relying on support elements from dedicated Companies. A House consists of 40 Tactical Marines, 15 Scouts, 15 Assault Marines, 15 Devestators, 10 House Veterans, the Company's Command Squad, and a full escort of transports and armored vehicles ranging from Centurions to Land Raiders. This organization allows The Sons of Amar to disperse their forces across multiple theaters, a necessity for a Chapter that acts in close coordination of the Ordo Hereticus.

Hope you like what I have so far.

Cheers

Quick question, are you priming your models first or, just painting it straight on the plastic?

I didn't use a spray primer, but I always basecoat my minis before painting. These were based by hand with a few thin layers of Adeptus Battlegrey. It looks a lot like GW plastic after it dries, but since I am painting them white I didn't want to use a darker basecoat.

Update:
Finally figured out what I want to do to personalize my Centurions. I use Imperial Fists Chapter Tactics and I thought this would be a nice way to represent the Tank Hunters bonus.

C&C always welcome

Cool fluff. And using tank treads as armour plates? Very cool. I might even "borrow" it.

Only reason I ask is due to the face that your white seems a bit "chalky". But will hold further C&C when the model is finished. The scheme is looking good wit all the gold and white, and the purple as a spot looks good as well.

Glad you like the fluff, there will be plenty more
And 'borrow' away. I took the idea from the new Bullgryns myself. Either way, all of my conversions are up-for-grabs for those who want to try them.

I do see what you mean about the 'chalky' look. I haven't painted this much white before so I am learning as I go. I've been using lots of very watered-down layers of white and mixtures of white and grey. I am hoping that a final layer will pull everything together. Thanks for your input, won't be long before Laskarus is finished

Update:

Lord Commissar 'Bane' has arrived.

Ok now that is a cool looking model. I do hope you do some sort of Merc/Traitor Guard to go with Commissar Bane.

Glad you approve

This project will include several armies in it and some Mercs aren't out of the question. For list purposes I want to use him as a Commissar for my IG allies. I've been convinced by a few people that I should green stuff one of those fancy hats for him. On top of that I want to lengthen and thicken his legs, they look a bit weedy for his upper torso.

He's looks quite imposing as he is. Also I like the guy in the background looking for a high five.

I think the legs look fine. AND NO HAT. Bane needs no hat.

Well lets hope he gets it soon because there is a grenade cooking in his other hand

deadmeat85 wrote:I think the legs look fine. AND NO HAT. Bane needs no hat.

You're the first person to disagree with the hat idea, but honestly I had always thought he looked fine as he is. Had more to do with him being 'Commissar' Bane than it actually looking better I think.

Little update. I am really bad about getting sucked into conversions when I tell myself I am going to paint. So long story short I got no painting done today but I did get started on this.

This is the start of my Fellhound pattern Dreadnaught. The head is not glued yet and the arms are pinned into place. I think I may leave them pinned so I can swap arms out for list writing reasons, not to mention I am having a blast with the conversion.

C&C always welcome.

Looks good BUT the bottom legs look a little scrawny. Needs to be bulked out some. Armour plates or larger pistons might work.

Yeah, it definitely needs more hydraulics and plates. It's taking me a while to find the right bits for the job but I have plenty to sort through.

Almost finished converting the left arm. Right now it has the same problem as the legs, but that shouldn't be hard to remedy.

Still busy converting this guy so my painting is sidelined.

Alright, the 'Fellhound' is nearly ready for a final greenstuff detailing.

How do the proportions look? I've been working to remedy the 'spindly limb syndrome' and I think I got it.

The Fellhound is ready for greenstuff.

=][= Sons of Amar Armory; The Fellhound =][=

Named after one of Amar's fiercest predators and crafted under the supervision of renowned Forge Master Kaieda Gallus, the 'Fellhound' pattern Dreadnought is a rare sight exclusive to the armory of the Sons of Amar. Designed for the thick forests and treacherous glacial terrain of Amar, the Fellhound boasts numerous improvements to the standard Astartes Dreadnought. It's height provides a two-fold advantage, allowing it to traverse difficult terrain with little to no challenge while also providing a higher vantage point from which it may identify and engage threats. On open terrain the Fellhound can also use its enhanced mobility to run down a foe with unnerving swiftness and then redeploy before an effective counter can be mustered. It's close-combat weapon is dual purpose, giving it the ability to shred both obstacles or enemies with contemptuous ease and a built in Storm Bolter or Heavy Flamer only adds to its destructive potential. Primarily employed in the role of heavy reconnaissance, the Autocannon is the weapon of choice making the Fellhound deadly for heavy infantry and light armored elements alike. The most common variant of the Fellhound omits a close-combat system in favor of dual Autocannons that, when combined with its superior mobility, creates an effective fire-support platform.

"These Kyrallians, now they're a different breed. First time we saw em Cap'n got high n' mighty, spoutin how none of em was doin honor by the Emperor. He got on sayin, 'not a single one of ya is sportin an Aquilla, not one!' The way he was rantin and ravin me and the lads were expectin him to call heresy on the lot. But them Kyrallians, they just stood there quiet as stone, didn't even pay no bother to Cap'n.
Well, that got Cap'n so miffed that before we knew whats what he had one of em by the collar. Now I ain't sayin I ever hoped for it, but that Kyrallian pulled some move that would make a fethin' pointy ear think himself clumsy. Cap'n was on his back with a boot on his throat and the Kyrallian finally spoke. I remember every word. 'We don't fear dyin,' he said, 'we are born to serve and die and when our bodies fall into the mud and blood, we have done justice by not sullyin His mark.'
Cap'n didn't talk much a few days. Any doubt the lot of us had over these Kyrallians, they put em to rest when we saw em in battle. They don't need to show no Aquilla. It's enough a part of em."

Commander Teller's Kyrallian patter Leman Russ Vanquisher is coming along nicely.

This is my first foray into tank conversion. I'm trying to give the Leman Russ a more modern day MBT look as opposed to the WWI Land Cruiser vibe. Much to do still. C&C welcome.

The gun looks really nice on that turret. I think you did hit the more MBT look. Can we got some other profile shots of the tank. you know front, side, rear.

Thanks deadmeat, I will definitely get some additional angles for my next post. Haven't made a lot of progress since that pic though.

I have started rethinking the gameplan for the initial 1k and so the Kyrallians are taking a back seat for now. Today I was able to trade some of my old bits for a few new toys, a squad of assembled Sanguinary Guard and a squad of DV Terminators. The SGs are getting ripped apart and will become generic Assault Marines but I will be saving some of the cool bits for other units. That said, here is something that happened shortly after I tore appart a Sanguinary.

The Fellhound is nearly complete. I need to just stop being lazy about green stuffing. Should be ready for paint very soon. Sorry the lighting at my work desk is not the greatest.

Thoughts?

Interesting concept. I especially like the "Renegade" Centurions, the use of Tank treads in a nice touch.

Perhaps I'm missing something but why prime the bodies separately from the arms and heads but then not paint them separately? I could understand priming arms, heads, and bodies separately especially if you're doing a multi-colored scheme but I don't get priming one part but not the other prior to assembling.

Then again if they're salvaged, like you mentioned, it might just be arm and head swaps... I'm tired :/

Neat project though.

Thanks Dust, I still have to decide on some finishing touches for the Centurions, namely a fix for the feet now that they aren't covered with plating.

I've had a lot of people ask why my minis aren't primed, and yeah they were not spray primed. I base coated all of them by hand and I used Adeptus Battlegrey foundation. Main reason being I would rather not highlight from black to white. Also, it was far too cold outside for me to spray prime them. So yes, they aren't primed in the usual way and it is hard to tell since the base coat is pretty much GW plastic colored.

The foundation paint seems to hold on alright especially with a varnish. However if I am being a painting noob with this methodology please let me know. If I should spray prime I would rather do it now before it would layer too heavily.

Ah, well alright then... and that explains it.

I primed some guys with Roughcoat a few weeks ago and I could not for the life of me tell if I had gotten primer on an area or not at times.

The only thing that I'd really warn about is hand priming. I used to hand prime way back in the day on every single model and it can create some really subtle and spectacular effects but it's also a huge pain.

And as for the weather, fellow Ameribro, I can relate. I don't want to think about how many braincells I potentially killed from priming things in March inside my garage.

There are paint on primers out there. GW has the Imperial Primer. I use it when it get too hot where I live and I can't spray prime outside. 110 degrees isn't good for priming.
