It’s batrep time! I’ve been reading up on improving my batreps and thought a small game of Kill Team would be a great place to test out new ideas. For this batrep it’ll be a classic zombies vs shotguns. My Imperial guard veterans, half armed with shotguns, against Nurgle cultists led by a small squad of nurgle marines, played by CaptinMoses. For a bit of flavour we’re ignoring break tests, simulating the last stand of the guard against the zombie outbreak.

It was just gone midnight, the call had come from the edge of the quarantine zone, shots heard, and the local sentry point had gone quiet. The strange plague had been ravaging the local population, and all infected had been moved into isolation. In other cities the plague had overrun them, whispers of the dead raising back up to infect the living were rife. 2 veteran squads were dispatched to investigate, knowing that if the quarantine had been broken they would have to move fast to reestablish it, or they would all be surely doomed...

Armies

Chaos

4 marines with an aspiring champion - power sword, plasma pistol, all with mark of nurgle.
Cultists - 8 with autoguns, 1 heavy stubber and a champion with a shotgun, all with mark of nurgle.

Specialists
Aspiring champion - master crafted plasma pistol (didn’t realise leaders cant be spec)
Cultist champion - FNP
Heavy stubber - split fire

Imperial Guard

1 veteran squad - 2 flamers, heavy flamer, demolitions specialists, shotguns
1 vet squad - as is

Specialists
Shotgun sergeant - scout (leader trait gave him specialist rule)
Demolition charge guy - infiltrate
Vox guy - FNP (vox just there to distinguish him)
Las pistol CCW sergeant - fleshbane

Mission - Alone in the dark - night fighting for the whole game (kept the photos dark for effect), models can’t deploy within 3” of each other, roll for each model and on a 1-2 they go into reserve with the outflank special rule. 3 primary objectives, all worth 1VP.

2 lasgun vets and the vox go into reserve for the guard. 1 marine, the heavy stubber cultist and 2 autogun cultists go into reserve for chaos.

The board

Deployment

The three objectives are highlighted in red.

The shogun vet with the demo charge infiltrates, or as we nicknamed him “Marbo lite”. I also forgot my shotgun sergeants scout move in the photo, all he did was run straight forward to hide behind a wall.

Chaos seize on 5 thanks to their leader trait, which lets them seize on a 4+.

The veterans swept forward looking for any disturbance, moving up to a derelict refinery building, suddenly the call came up from the front, “somethings moving up ahead, looks like, looks li- by the Emperor... ZOMBIES! Targets front! Targets front!”

Chaos Turn 1

Not a very eventful turn, chaos pushed forwards and fired off a few shots, but did no damage.

Imperial Guard Turn 1

Pretty much the same as Chaos, a few shots fired but no casualties, I did manage to secure both objectives. Both we’re re-roll 1’s for shooting.

Chaos Turn 2

The heavy stubber, 1 cultist and a marine come in from reserve, Chaos get first blood as the outflanking cultist that came in with the marine kills off a flamer veteran.

“Where the hell did they come from!” Panic sets in as the Veterans find themselves more surrounded than they first thought, and a sudden realisation that its not just the infected they have to deal with as the massive bulk of the Nurgle Marine stands silhouetted against the night sky.

Imperial Guard Turn 2

The vox shotgun vet and 1 lasgun vet both come on from reserve, the vox vet killing a cultist with his shotgun. Marbo lite takes out the cultist thats running at him, but all the other shooting fails, these zombies are tough to hurt!

The zombie came charging onto the roof of the building, screaming in bloodlust at the veteran guardsman in front of him. Keeping his composure the veteran pulled up his shotgun and fired, the first hit blew a chunk out of the zombies torso that would kill a normal man, but the zombie continued undeterred. The second shot however found its mark, tearing the zombies head clean from his shoulders, letting out a shower of blood and bile. The veteran was pleased with the kill, but shaken by how easily the zombie shrugged of what should have been a mortal wound...

Chaos Turn 3

The push forwards continues. A Marine wipes out one of the shotgun toting veterans, with a well placed bolter round, 2 lasgun veterans go down to autogun fire and the aspiring champion kills the vox veteran with his plasma pistol. Heavy losses for the Guard!

Imperial Guard Turn 3

The Guard continued to moved forward, trying to secure the building. Lasgun vets killed off the heavy stubber and the heavy flamer rounded a corner and immolated the cultist champion. I considered dropping the demo charge on a lone marine but thought it better to wait til next turn, when he might have a shot at the aspiring champion. I also declared a total of 5 charges this turn. 2 shotgun vets and one lasgun vet get gunned down to an amazing turn of overwatch. The fleshbane sergeant makes his charge against the marine infront of him but gets dropped before he can make any attacks. What terrible rolls for the Guard!

The building was almost secure, but the forces of Nurgle were all around them. The demolitions expert surveyed the situation, and seeing the traitor marine in front of him started to prep his demolition charge, “No! Not Yet!” a shout came from the veteran sergeant below, “Save it for their leader, I’ll take that heretic!”. The demolition veteran disarmed his charge and began to fire his shotgun at a nearby cultist, while the sergeant burst into a run. Las pistol blazing in one hand the sergeant made the charge, leaping forward into combat swinging his chainsword with all his weight. With a speed that didn’t at all match his bulk, the rotting marine side stepped the blow while simultaneously firing his fist straight into the sergeants face, cracking his skull even through his helmet, killing him instantly. Then, before the veterans body could fall to the ground, the marine span and kicked the now limp body square in the chest, throwing the body 5 meters through the air before landing in a slump against the wall of a building. A horrible, rasping laugh came from inside the traitors helm as he looked up at the demolitions man, eyeing up his next target...

Chaos Turn 4

The last Chaos reserves come on, a cultist and a marine. The aspiring champion tears down the heavy flamer vet with his plasma pistol, and a marine kills the other flamer vet. 1 lasgun vet and 1 shotgun vet get killed by cultists fire, and the shotgun sergeant dies as well, giving a VP to chaos for slaying my leader. The marine that killed the sergeant in combat last turn gets into the building and charges marbo lite, but the combat ends in a draw.

The marine swiftly pulls itself up the side of the building, red eyes glaring at the lone guardsman. He pulls out his bolt pistol and takes a shot, missing by a fraction, and then charges at him. The veteran drops his demo charge and fires 2 panicked shots with his shotgun, both missing wildly. The marine smashes the veterans shotgun out of his hands and goes for a killing blow, but the canny veteran dodges it. Pulling out a combat knife the veteran thrusts it deep into the belly of the marine, a good blow, but it finds nothing but dead flesh. The veteran pulls back and frees his knife, now covered in all manner of sickly disgusting ooze, “By the Emperor, what are you?!” the veteran yells, “Death...” rasps the ominous reply...

Imperial Guard Turn 4

I manage to down a marine this turn with lasgun fire, but I fail to do anymore. T4 and T5 are proving very difficult to deal with! The combat continues, and again is a draw.

Chaos Turn 5

Chaos start to move onto the objectives to secure them some victory points. None of the Guard are killed but one is forced to go to ground to avoid catching a bolter round. Again, the combat is a draw.

Imperial Guard Turn 5

Everyone left standing stays still and concentrates fire on the marines, but do no damage whatsoever, and again the combat is drawn. What a frustrating turn! We roll to see if the game continues, and it does.

Chaos Turn 6

A marine kills a lasgun vet in cover, and the combat is finally ended when the aspiring champion joins in with his power sword (or scythe in this case).

The veteran stands, exhausted by the effort of prolonged confrontation, and feeling ill and weak, the effects of exposure to the marine no doubt. ‘I’m infected’ the thought flashes through his mind. “Yes...” a voice comes from behind him, “You will surely die from Nurgles great blessing...” the choked voice comes again, the aspiring champion of Nurgle now in full view. “But you don’t have to die, you can live... if you accept his gift...” Raw fear now in the veterans mind, he couldn’t become one on these... things. “NEVER” he screams hurling himself at the champion. A burning pain fills him quickly, looking down he sees the champions scythe has cut clean into him. “The blessing will soon be complete, you will raise again..” the champion spits, before moving off. “No... no...” the veteran gasps, he looks round and sees his weapon lying in arms reach. With his last strength he grabs his shotgun, and turns it upon himself...

Imperial Guard Turn 6

I’ve hardly anything left now, I manage to bring down another marine with lasgun fire, but thats all. We roll again to see if the game goes on, and it does.

Chaos Turn 7

Another veteran dies to bolter fire and the objectives are made more secure.

Imperial Guard Turn 7

My last veterans move aggressively to the closest objective, but only manage to kill 1 cultist. As thats all I can do, the game ends.

Final Score

Spoiler:
Chaos 5
Imperial Guard 0

Chaos Victory!

The champion of Nurgle surveys the battlefield, a good victory. All that he needed to spread his masters works. The last veterans put up a brave, but ultimately futile defense as they were overwhelmed. Soon the whole city would be infected, then... then the champion would get his masters favour...

Post Game

Well that was a pretty one sided fight I think. I knew lasguns and shotguns were weak, but damn. T4 and T5 were really difficult for me to hurt, I was only wounding those marines on 6’s! I think I had some bad luck to, losing 1/4 of my force to overwatch in my own turn was a particular kicker! Maybe next time I’ll take a Chimera... Still, it was a fun game with a lot of narrative, and hopefully you enjoyed reading it as much as we enjoyed playing it. Thanks guys!

Why is Kill Team so damn good? Kinda gutted I didn't see all that myself now, looks like it was a great game. The extra toughness of Nurgle sucks. The narrative you plonked here and there was quality too.

What does Split Fire in Kill Team games?

@Naw
Split Fire in kill team lets you allocate shots from one weapon onto different people.
I put it on my Heavy Stubber because it's heavy 3 so I could target 3 different models.

5000pts 18 wins 1 draw 15 losses
1500pts 8 wins 0 draws 6 losses
1000pts 2 wins 0 draws 2 losses
1000pts 1 wins - draws 1 losses

Only 2 different targets, actually.

Yes, you have to decide ahead of time which two targets, and how many shots you're taking at each target.

I was under the impression that every model is a separate unit in killteam from reading the rules?

Anyways this batrep makes me think of how nasty plague marines would be in killteam.

So if every model is a separate unit, then what is the point of split fire?

Also it seems on a few occasions in this batrep the guard were treated as being in units. Still one of the best batreps I've seen but I'm just pointing that out.

So you can split separate shots onto different models, here with the heavy stubber its Heavy 3, so with splitfire he could fire at more than one enemy model, allocating different shots to different enemies (we played 3 but apparently its only 2)

Thanks! They were all played as seperate units, but sending guardsmen anywhere on their own without any support tends to get them very very dead, as what happened to the outflankers.

Oh haha Yeah it was a fun mission, adds a bit more of a narrative. Permanent night fight is good for guys with short range shooting, but didn't affect the game massively. The reserves rule was also quite fun, as it gave the feel of a strung out patrol suddenly coming under fire.
