Recently went through my old 40k stuff lying around that I never really used and decided to maybe get into the game at last. Apparently I have a lot more models than I thought, though I think my small group of guys I actually painted were left behind in the local store that has since closed, including some heavy weapons :(

Oh well. Anyways, I talked to a buddy who I believe has a small space marine army from some time ago and we're going to play a match, so I'm going to try and assemble a quick force for fun against him with what's on hand while I plan out what I'd like to get once I do some trading/buying/selling.

I have 3 Meltas, 4 plasma guns, 5 snipers, two commissars (one wiht bolt pistol and chain sword, with power axe and missing an arm, I'm going to put an army with a plasma pistol on him I think). A couple grenade launchers, 18 flamers, a dozen or so Voxcasters, about fifty? guys with lasguns, two or so sergeants/officers. A steel legion officer with power sword+bolt pistol, two Tallarn officers with boltguns, three lascannons, one heavy bolter, one mortar, one missile launcher, two autocannons (various parts missing but I can make do).

I quickly threw this together:

One Platoon with:
PCS - Three flamers, Vox, Steel legion officer with bolt pistol and power sword, Commissar with plasma pistol and power weapon (117)
Infantry squad with one flamer and vox (60)
Infantry squad with one flamer and vox (60)
Special Weapon squad, three sniper rifles (50)

Veterans squad with vox and three meltaguns (105)

Haven't really read through the rules yet again, nothing more than a quick skim so this might all end up changing but I was in the mood to try and throw something together.

Well first welcome back to the hobby. Now onto your list. First I'd take the Commissar out of the PCS as he doesn't really serve a purpose. If you really want to use him I'd blob up the two other squads and put him with them and use them as a large meat shield for the rest of the army, plus if you did that you can drop on vox. It won't be the most competitive army but I think it'll be fun. If you have any questions, feel free to PM me.

I'd probably swap the sniper special weapon squad for 3 ratlings, you get to keep the snipers (plus get the cover bonus) and use the 20 points to get carapace armor on your CCS, what with the 3 plasma guns and all.

Do you have any armour at all? A Chimera maybe? Meltavets really need to close to do their damage, and a squad of them sitting back without a transport and having specilist short-range weapons is a really easy kill for Marines. Possibly if they are going to be a more long-range type deal, hit them with Plasmas so they can hit hard at a longer range.

In my experience Commissars are no good in a PCS - if you do happen to fail, he kills the Junior Officer! I'd much rather make a big blob and chuck him in there. Makes regular Guardsmen hard to move, and makes him a difficult target with all the bodies and Sarges to tank Challenges with their faces.

Special Weapons Teams are not much chop IMO, and i'd much rather a HWT with Autocannons or something.

Anyway, those are a few I just had handy. If you can dig up a Hellhound you'll find those things are utterly silly at 500 points. In any case, with what you've got, I'd make a big blob (40 strong maybe) with a Commissar as the baseline a build from that. My Blob held me through every 500 pointer I had, they are very difficult to shift.
