Is this about the Red Skins or the Siminoles? Only thing I remember about either issue is absently listening to Rush a few years ago as he meandered from talking about how making the Red Skins change their name is unAmerican to some rant about apologizing to France for shelling the Normandy coast line in 1944. I don't know how he got from one to the other, but it was god damn hilarious XD

I'm surprised more teams haven't changed their names yet, especially after University of Illinois was forced to get their mascot, Chief Illiniwek, back in 2007.

"Universities of" are often(1) public schools, and recieve state funding. The federal government doesn't directly fund any universities, but indirectly subsidizes student loans, research grants, etc. (2) What you are thinking of is the NCAA rule that prohibited colleges from appearing in post season play if they had a Native American mascot (barring a few schools that have tribal affiliations.)

(1) University of Pennsylvania is an Ivy League private school, while University of Chicago is an elite private school. On the other end of the spectrum, University of Phoenix is both private and for-profit, and only headquartered in Phoenix. Conversly, Rutgers is essentially the "University of New Jersy," and it even calls itself "The State University of New Jersey."

(2) The reason for the names, prevelant outside the colonial states, is that most "university of blank" or "blank State Univesity" schools are land grant colleges. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land-grant_university Another federal subsidy
