Washington (AFP) - A student stabbed or slashed around 20 others Wednesday at a high school in the US state of Pennsylvania, officials said.

"These are significant injuries," Chris Kaufmann, the trauma medical director at Forbes Regional Hospital, told CNN.

"We had two patients who went immediately to the operating room," Kaufmann said.

The incident at the Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville, about 20 miles east of Pittsburgh, began at about 7:15 am local time (1120 GMT).

Dan Stevens, a spokesman for Westmoreland County emergency management, said the suspect is a male student who has been taken into custody.

Stevens said he was cornered by police officers who rushed to the scene. His age and identity were not immediately released.

A statement on the website of the Franklin Regional School District said a "critical incident has occurred at the high school."

"All elementary schools are cancelled, the middle school and high school students are secure," the statement said.

See...we need gun control know. This has gotten out of hand. If the gun was secure.........wait.......what?

If only there had been a good guy with a knife there to protect the children.

I hope the injured children recover and live full and decent lives.

This is going to go the same way it always does: We score the cheap political points and regurgitate the same tired bumper sticker memes over and over again, to zero productive outcome. I'm as guilty as anyone. Can we see what happens if we don't do it? Just once?

I'm glad no one died. Hopefully all the kids recover and they get the one who did this under some serious evaluation.

At this point, I'd like to speculate (based upon zero available information), "fame seeking".

I'm glad the principal was able to tackle the kid and I hope everyone recovers well. What an awful thing.

If nothing else, the lack of it mattering might be a good reason not to spit tropes, as you say. If nothing else, I bet doing so sort of inures us to the facts of what happened (a sad tragedy) and reduces it to, well, "that thing that happens where we all do our dance".

this is very sad, we had a stabbing in toronto today as well.

So sad that there are such angry/sad/disgruntled people in this world who would rather take out their emotions on the innocent then find a constructive outlet or help or something, anything else.

It is interesting that there was also a mass stabbing in China recently. I don;t think they are related, but are mass stabbings on the rise world wide?

It's not all bad: this is now, at long last, the top story on Crash News Network: The Flight 370 Website.

At least for a day or so.

I think more its sad that there are people unable to get help for whatever reason, or no one able or willing to help them. Rarely are these crimes out of the blue.

That is very hard to determine because they are fairly uncommon and the variability is therefore much greater.

There have been two mass stabbings in China recently, which were both "terrorist" attacks by organised groups. That puts them in a different category to the single attacker type.

There was a mass stabbing in Japan a few years ago. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akihabara_massacre
Also several other attacks in China in the past.

Some single attackers are clinically mentally ill, while others just seem to be severely pissed off and want to take it out on someone else.

Eternal Plague

22 victims in 30 minutes or so, none fatal.

If the teenage was looking to murder, his first and fewer subsequent victims would of been enough. It looks like several slashes or stabs per person and then off to inflict as much damage as possible.

Until more information comes out we will not know immediately. Of note though:

His laywer describes the kid as run of the mill but has no idea caused this to happen.

Police are said to of heard the kid say he wanted to die.

Several students quote the suspect as being quiet/nice kid. Contrast with the crazed look he had while stabbing.

A security guard was stabbed and lots of local news outlets questioning why metal detectors were not installed for a 3,000+ student body along with cameras (that were installed last year). Security guard did his job in helping to subdue the suspect.

Every news outlet with a comments section just teems with pinning the blame on Obama, guns, decay of society, ect..

In my school, every male had a lockblade and carried it openly in their pocket.

Yeah, even 10 years ago when I was in high school I'd say at least 50% of all male students had a knife or blade of some sort on them. The other 50% probably had lighters lol

I am so glad to grow up in the arse end of no where in England. The worst we had to deal with at school was the donkey cave who thought he was much better than everyone else. After a quick scrap all is over and everyone moves on.

Glad that no deaths were involved, dont want to start a gun debate but do you guys across the pond think this sort of thing will only go up if firearms are banned. Not sure how knives are policed over there.

actually, since most of the time we find out that these people are on psychoactive meds, it means that not only did they seek out help, but that we gave it to them, and it wasnt the right kind of "help". at best it didnt make them better, at worst it made them worse.

That is whats sad, the fact that most mass killers have reported they were depressed/ect and seen a doctor, been prescribed meds, and then they still snap.

And 99% of them wouldn't consider using it on another student, and the other 1% wouldn't because everyone had a knife.

That's how it was at my school as well. I'm pretty sure it hasn't changed much, but it's not a school in a high crime area either.
