Ravenous D, I'm curious how would Shining Spears fare in such a race.

I've mentioned it before and got screamed at by posters that I was wrong wrong wrong, but shining spears are actually one of the best point for point anti marine units in combat in the entire game, based on speed and effectiveness. And they aren't bad against tanks either. Problem is they compete against warp spiders who are the flat out winner in the book.

Its a massive write up to get everything up there but I'll do a quick one to show the idea:

To kill 10 marines with marines you'll need 60 bolter hits to achieve 30 wounds. So that's either 1260pts at greater then 12" or 630pts at rapid fire range. Breaks down to 63pts/126pts per marine kill.

Lets looks at warp spiders against the same 10 marines. You only need 21 spiders or 399pts to do it, so 39.9pts per marine kill.

Bryan always said that if the studio ever had to mix with the manufacturing and sales part of the business it would destroy the studio. And I have to say – he wasn’t wrong there! The modern studio isn’t a studio in the same way; it isn’t a collection of artists and creatives sharing ideas and driving each other on. It’s become the promotions department of a toy company – things move on!

I run shining spears all the time, prescienced with Monster Hunter and a Star Lance...so very very good.

I run them as well, sometimes just with a Shardtarch and sometimes with a Farseer and a Baron as well. Poor man's Seer Council, but much less overpowering(sometimes I even refuse Fortune because that power is just so broken with already durable units). I know how good they are, I'm just perplexed that people consider them a weak choice, especially online, as they are amazing vs the current meta units, things even Spiders have trouble killing.

Its mostly because most people in this have narrow vision and shallow tactical depth with a good serving of unwillingness to try new things.

Like the crimson hunter or the hemlock. It seems everyone automatically assumes there is a quad gun waiting for them.

I'd never faced a Quad Gun...until Adepticon. And I was playing my bugs then.

And the serpents should be able to clear any quad gun before the hunter comes in / if they have a quad gun its because they probably don't have a flier...which is good because that's what you're hunter was mostly there for anyways.

Always take Monster Hunter on your Spears...alway always always. I have put down so many MCs because of it on the catapults and lances.

EDIT, If I'm running the hemlock, I'm buying the Skyshield for it to start on the board.

Both tank and monster hunters confer to the rest of the unit.
