So I started making my own 25mm clear acrylic (plexiglass) bases for my minis when I realized that 25mm is the side of the upper face of the base. The bevel on the bottom of the bases makes them actually bigger then 25mm.

So my question from a tournament perspective if I had my models based on a true 25mm, would you consider it a slight advantage that may (however small of a chance) effect areas my model can fit into? I don't expect it to be an issue, but players can be strange at times.

My personal opinion is that the chances of it every mattering are very slim indeed, but you're right that some players can be funny about this type of thing.

For my Nomads I bought scenic bases from MicroArtStudio and I'm almost 100% sure they're also 25mm at the base.

Well it all depends on what sort of bevel you're talking about ofc. Either way I wouldnt care but if it's the same as the standard bases I bet most wouldn't even notice the difference.

If your attack is going too well, you have walked into an ambush

The easy way is always mined

The ones I cut have no bevel what so ever, since I have to use a hole saw to cut them from a Plexiglas sheet so they are 25mm solid straight down.

I mean I get why GW and CB have bevels on the base to save on material and to make it stand up.

But I guess if I ever run into an issue I will have to hunt down a holesaw that is the size of the base (bevel) of the base.

It isn't big deal. I see plenty of people using clear unbeveled bases all the time.

Also the 25mm is the bottom of the bevel, not the top (so the top is slightly smaller than the bottom (at least on all the GW and CB ones I have lying around it is)

so it probably doesn't matter...

My CB and GW bases are 25mm at the base, and 23 and a bit on the top face.

It doesn't matter enough (1.5-2mm) to make a difference.

When you get into 5+mm, then it makes a difference.

What Chromedog said. 25mm at bottom, 23mm at top. And 3.5mm thick.

I hate the bevel, since it makes it impossible for me to pick up the base-- manual dexterity is not what it used to be. And really, 20mm bases are better for human sized minis in 28mm scale anyway. Feel free to skip the bevel, or make one like that used on the old Rackham 30mm bases (a 45 degree bevel that extended 1mm down and 1mm in, or something close to that.)

Sounds fine, different bases propose their own problems but I assume most players can agree to let tiny things slide or work around. Unless they are a massive jerk and just try to shut you down instead of playing the game.

I'd be curious to see how they look!

Seems mine come out closer to 24mm it seems, guess I would have to get a 26 or 27mm hole saw to get a more proper 25mm, but no matter

As soon as I paint a mini well enough I feel comfortable showing it off I will post some pictures, I have a scheme I am going to attempt on my Hassassins but it will be very time consuming.

A 1 1/8" hole saw give you a 24mm blank, so I guess that is what you have?

A 1 1/4" hole saw gives a 27mm blank. I figure a 1 3/16" hole saw will give a 25.5mm blank, but I do not have one in that size, so I cannot say for 100% certainty.

Here is the exact bit I use

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00899C7UU/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1#productDetails

And measuring the one black I have on hand I get 23mm this time, my wild guess is these bits are 25mm on the outside edge not inside so I lose around 2mm of material in the cutting process. Lesson lerned the bit is meanto drill a 25mm hole (outside) not make pretty round 25mm blanks lol. Will have to grab a new bit soon then, any sugggestions?

A circle cutter for a drill press?

Or just order them from Litko. http://www.litko.net/products/Clear-Miniature-Bases%2C-Circular-25mm.html choose the 3mm base thickness. Probably cheaper to do it this way.

Well when you have a press why not lol

Thanks for the link , will just do that this time around.

Also do you think a 50mm base would work to replace a 40mm base with stupid little extensions?

I have a press. No circle cutter though. Keep meaning to get one...

I'd wait and see what this 55mm bases buzz is all about before swapping 40mm+extensions for 50mm. As if an 8' diameter circle (40mm in scale) is not already area enough for most things

NO bases NEED to be swapped out.

The new bikers on 55mm bases don't require the older ones to be rebased - just like the older hungries on 25mms didn't require a rebase to 40mm when the new ones were released - or the old soggy rat's 25mm rebased to the new one's 40mm.

They have gone on record that they only ever planned to have THREE base sizes in the game.

Thanks, but that was not the issue at hand. I get that arguments and the drama it has caused on the official CB board is annoying to say the least.

The reason I asked about the size is obviously for some models they have base extensions, now with some scenic 3rd party bases you can mimic the design on the extensions (if you good with green stuff) however with a clear base that presents a problem as I am not going to glue on some base extensions to my clear base, so I have to scale up the base size to fit the entire model while maintaining the same overall footprint the previous base+extension had.

If I cut my own bases so that for examples a REMs feet stopped at the very edge of the new base, there should be a hug issue on the size, problem is I have to start cutting my own odd sized bases to do this and then I could run into issues with stubborn rule lawerying opponents (perhaps not)

OK, Scarface and the Iguana TAG are supposed to come with base extensions (mine didn't - but I managed to fit both onto a 40mm resin base each). The overall length of a base with extension was around 55mm. I managed to get a base extension though - and measure it.

The O-yoroi also comes with a base extension, and a few remotes come with them too (but they are moulded to the feet of the remotes). This puts their overall diameter (diagonal foot to foot) around 50mm.

So to dredge this back up we got official guidance on the bases from CB

I wonder if that site you posted Red will start making 55mm now.

If there is a demand, I'm sure they will. I'm afraid to even think about what might be in that thread to which you linked. Ah, wait, I already know

Go outside and draw a 10' diameter circle. That is your 55mm base in scale. A bit much. Better to tell the sculptors to keep things in scale and not pose models in ways that will invite groin injuries.

On the plus side, the forum seems to be recognizing my gallery votes again. So I got that going for me

Took them like 10 pages to realise CB wasn't making it a req to rebase their models lol, but on a 1-10 scale the drama was at a 15 over such a petty detail.

You read it!?* I didn't think you were a glutton for punishment Anyway, I made a few 55mm base 'coasters' for my Jotums and my Kameels. (I've posted pix in my terrain thread in a bit) I have no problems with them, anymore than I do with 25mm bases... ie. they are oversized, but meh, I'll live with it.

This is the solution to base extensions, and in that regard, it is an improvement.

*Yeah, I saw enough 'drama' in the speculation thread-- didn't need another dose. Most changes are greeted with that sort of histrionics, BTW.

EDIT: posted the pix in my Bourak terrain thread.

I'd be quite happy to rebase Scarface and my Gorgos on 55mm bases. They look so dinky on 40mm bases, and I hate extensions.

Thankfully I hadn't started building my Kameels yet, so I'll happily clip the base extensions off their feet and put them on 55mm bases.

So they finally came out and said that certain models will need to be rebased for 2016.

Looks like I won't be playing any ITS games in 2016. Or bothering to register for it.

I've not rebased any of my models for other games in the last 27 years and I'm not about to start. Infinity isn't my "forever" game and it certainly won't be my last.
If it means my TAGs, REMs, bikes and so on never play another game of infinity, then so be it.
They will not be rebased.
They will not be replaced with newer models on the "right" bases, either. If this means I no longer have enough models to play a game with, then I can change games. I've done it before and I will do so again.

That seems a little pessimistic. I think a year and a half is more than enough time to get used to the new rules and work something out.

 Fafnir wrote:
Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

Possibly, but it depends on a few factors. Did you use a scenic base, does the same scenic base come in the new size? Did you pin the model to the base?

I have a few models that to remove them from the base would damage them. The build was meant to be permanent, this is especially true of some metal models.

What you call pessimism I call realism. What you call "optimism" I call naivete.

I play one tournament a year anyway. ONE. I seriously doubt anyone will miss my participation.

The TOs might miss my terrain contribution more - but I can do without condescension prizes for coming last (without fail, they give me models that they know I dislike and will dispose of).

Rebasing my models means destroying the bases they are on. And probably damaging the models.
I haven't done it for ANY models of mine in the last 25 years (I stopped playing 40k rather than have to deal with douches who insisted that I had to rebase - in a game where NOTHING has a stated base size in the rulebook - unlike WHFB which at least USED TO) and I'm not going to start now.

I won't be changing my base sizes either, but I'm not going to stop playing or anything so dramatic.

I half agree with chromedog, I'm not changing hard work that I've already done because someone somewhere decided to backpedal on things.

But I'm also completely fine with going to any ITS games with my 'deal with it' face on. They can either DQ me or let me play. If people are going to be douchnozzles about base sizes, they aren't people I want to play with anyway.

First and foremost for me, it is a game to play with friends and have fun with. So I shall indeed keep on truckin'.
