I'm sure this is more of a general discussion thing, sorry if it's not.
So this guy ignored the pile-in rules, where you're not allowed to move through your own models when he piles in, then told me that they have to go around because his model had space to. (this "space" was about 10mm) After I pointed out the gap he said "it's a friendly game, it doesn't matter".
Too far?

Also, I'd like to hear what you guys consider as "too far".

If I sound like I'm being a condescending butthole, I'm not. Read my reply as neutrally as possible, please and thank you.

Honestly though when it comes rules I don't like bending the rules in my favor (inb4 someone talks about "line of sight from the eyes on models with no eyes" again). So yeah, he was being kind of a dick in my opinion.

A friendly game becomes unfriendly when you start breaking the rules to win.

Personally I find it too far when they walk behind and cup me. But that's always been the way with the Tau I suppose.

To be honest, as long as both players are attempting to use the rules and are constructive, then it's all good - even when we realise earlier blunders with the BRB. It's only too far when someone decides they know best and refuses to discuss the rules.

One of our group does things like move his vehicle too far and we had to call him out on it, cheating just leads to arguments and broken friendships.

When you have to yell "Over the line" and tell them that if they insist on proceeding with their actions they will be entering a world of pain.

I think it's okay to use the "its a friendly game" excuse to allow someone to take back a mistake, or jump back one phase. Like if someone forgot to run a squad and we already started combat, I'm fine with letting them run. Or even going back an rolling a FNP if they forgot it.

But it's not okay to use the "it's a friendly game" excuse on your own disregard for the rules. That's like saying, "Hey, I know the rule is this, but I'm going to do it this way because I dont take you seriously and should win this game anyway"

Yeah, I seriously doubt how friendly the game was if one of the players was cheating. Furthermore, insisting that both players play the game by the same rules isn't a sign of unfriendly behavior.

Play the game by the rules. If you want to play with different rules, then you've got to decide that before hand, rather than springing it on your opponent only once it becomes advantageous to yourself.

Keep the rules in unless you both agree on a rule change. You can't just say oh it doesn't matter, just a friendly game.

Ignoring rules (without asking first) is too far. It's pretty hard to just make up rules on the fly - which is why we have a rulebook. If you're going to ignore the rulebook, you're not playing 40k, you're playing MagicPlasticPewPewDudes. MPPPD hasn't been fun for decades. :-)

But how else will you forge a narrative?

If you want to forge a narrative, tell me beforehand.

Although, it does seem like he was cheating.
He rolled for powers and got ones he didn't like so rolled again because he didn't roll for them on that game table.

I told them no, but y'know.

You know, Dude, I dabbled in pacifism myself at one point. Not in Nam, of course.
