A while ago i thought i'd start a guard army and make a board that i can play on with my guard. I decided to go for a mud board, and with guards that can be used on the board withour looking out of place.
I'm done with about 1/6th of the board. I need feedback so i know what is good and i should keep doing, and what can be improved.
I might as well start;
Spoiler:

the first and third pictures were taken before i made some minor tweaks. I will remove the road.
It used to look like this;

I need some feedback on my minis too;
Spoiler:

Sorry for the bad lighing in some of the pics.

A converted Salamander;

This squad was painted before the rest of my minis, so they don't look as good as my more recent minis.

I really like the mud effect, reminds me of photos from the Somme or the Marne. It's begging for some shell craters, a demolished cathedral or two, and lots and lots of debris.

How'd you do the mud?

Looks really nice, you may however want to add some highligts and colours that cathes they eye from what i saw on the Basilisk. May just be the photo that obscured it since it was a little dark maybe?

Chaos: 6000pts

That mud looks really amazing, I'm also interested in how you did it.

The craters are definetly on their way, the debris too. But it must not be too visible. I just have to find a store (in europe) where i can buy things to use ad building debris, the GW buildings are too expensive for my budget.

Nope, it is not highlighted enough. I will highlight it more, but i kind of want it to blend in.

I used three things to do the mud, sand, sawdust and PVA Glue.
I got the sand cheap from an animal store and PVA glue from a local hardware store. The sawdust is really easy to get your hands on, you can buy it from a hardware store, or just saw a couple of planks yourself. The sawdust must be a little rough.
To make craters I'll use some of the styrofoam that got left over when i made the trenches.

Thanks for all the positive responses!

I like.
Colours are simple & more realistic than many other Guard armies.
Paint job looks clean.
Mud looks muddy.
Well done & keep it up. Looking forward to seeing more.

The mud looks really wet and gunky. Very realistic. I would almost be afraid to touch the board for fear of it washing off on my hand. The planking looks really good.

I feel like you need more small details to prevent the board from looking like a huge expanse of mud from arm's length. Some more battlefield debris, and some barbed wire, would really help. I love the casualty down in the mud, but you could do more with abandoned helmets, bits of gear, etc.

I also think some puddles of water would help sell the look, too. If you don't have access to 'water effects', you could simply make a smooth area, paint it a muddy, greenish color, and varnish it. Also, especially where people can't walk (like around posts and fences), you might add a bit of static grass. Obviously, most of the grass has been trampled into the mud, but in inaccessible areas, it might still be struggling to grow.

This is a really great trench board and it looks like it would be fun to play on too.

Looks great. Needs more interest on the board so it doesn't just look like world of mudcraft

Check out what WWI footage you can find for "interest". It seems to be up your ally. Nice gunky mud, looks like a mess.
