Greetings, Fellow Dakkaites!

So I figured I'd foster a little discussion regarding the new Guard Codex (Call it what you want, it's still the Guard ) and I thought I might throw a poll up and see what the assembled Guard players of Dakka might have as their respective preferred Guard Regiment.

Though, why stop there? Why do you like or play the Regiment you play? And do you have a photo of your force to share?

Personally, I play Vostroyan Firstborn, specifically the 5th Vostroyan Firstborn Regiment, led by Lord Marshal Graf Harazahn (My company commander), with attached heavy armor support.

I love the story of Vostroya, the history and pride they hold in their homeworld and the reason they fight so hard to absolve even a portion of their debt from the Heresy era.

Also, I just LOVE the way the models look. They're so very unique, and they scream 40k to me. Impractical, and baroque to an almost extreme level. I love the way they look and more often than not when I do manage to make an armor save with them routinely say "It's all good, you managed to clip his hat, that's all". Or "Sweet, I made my furry hat save!" when I pass that 5+ (or 4+ cover). I know some folks think they look stupid, and that's fine by me. Part of the appeal really, because in Imperial Vostroya, HAT WEAR YOU!

What's your preferred regiment, and why?

Thanks for reading, and take it easy.

-Red__Thirst-

Edit: Added Mordian! I had them in and then added Maccabian Jannisaries and forgot to plug them in again under Praetorian. Derp!

So you include a regiment with no official models, but forget one that does?

For shame.

Whatever, the Mordian players were too cool for this poll anyways.

I'll be in the corner polishing my boots, ironing my uniform, and preparing to slaughter the enemies of the Imperium.

Good replies, but the question remains: Why do you guys like the regiment you do?

Purely for looks? For the fluff and history of the regiment?

If homebrew, what's your homebrew Regiment's story? Are they Deathworlders like Catachan? Hiveworlders like Mordian? Mechanized like the Steel Legion? Guerrilla specialists like the Tanith?

I'd love to see some models too if people have pictures to share (link to a gallery, even!)

Thanks guys, good replies so far. Sorry for the derp on forgetting Mordian once more there Blacksails.

Take it easy for now.

I'm a serving man myself, and I took a liking to drill and maintaining a high standard of dress throughout my years at military college. The dress uniform I wore there is derived from old British uniforms (similar to the Praetorians when painted red), so the Mordians were a good visual fit for me when I picked up 40k at the same school.

The fluff just sold me on them more. Hard as nails, disciplined and unflinching, and fought some badass battles, particularly the defense of their home world.

Now, I'm re-building my force out of Vic Minis Tannenburg Fusiliers, which are just plainly superior to the old GW metals.

UK

The First Antor Rifles Brigade, led by Commisar-General Wolfe and tank-commander Baron Hendrich.

General Tactics: Infantry wave assaults, favouring close-quarters combat. Precision Strikes with veteran units in tandem with the Valcadian Stormtrooper regiment. Few tanks, typically used to engage enemy armour.

Brief History: Their homeworld was only rediscovered after the Heresy, and was something of a paradise amidst the turmoil of a resettling Imperium, the population united, the independent economy and industry stable and the imperial creed readily accepted. However, as the tithes were paid and more and more men sent to various warzones, it became clear that Antor's peace would be its downfall. The regiments, due to the clean living conditions and eradication of many diseases on their homeworld, found almost every warzone to be slowly poisoning them. It took several decades for the correct rebreathers to be developed and phased into service, and all Antorian regiments eventually returned to combat, constantly helmeted outside of their ships.

The Beast's WAAAGH in M32 brought several Antorian regiments close to annihilation, and they never truly recovered. By M41, there was only 1 Antorian regiment in service, the 1st Rifles, and while it mostly consists of natives to Antor, the planet's clean atmosphere has made it a haven for retired or resting troops. As such, several soldiers and officers have switched regiments upon completing service, notably Captain Lucas Lorcan of 3rd Platoon 1st Company, a former Praetorian, specialising in infantry-led assaults on fortified positions.

Anyone interested in more on the Antor Rifles can find a collection of writing here:
http://antorsfinest.blogspot.co.uk/p/background.html

With the launch of the new codex, I'll be writing some more articles (fluff and tactics) soon.

91st Schrott Experimental
.

Officiallly the world of Schrott is classified as a "Death World", But to the Mechanicus it is a Vault World. Built into the crust of the planet a truly vast Vault contains legions of experiments, prototypes, forgotten machines and the like, all laid to rest or hidden within for one reason or another, the doors of the Vault alone ar elarge enough for a pair of Emperor Class Titans to stride through side by side with plenty of room. The planet itself is barren, with either mountains of scrap metal, from untold numbers of wrecked tanks and vehicles to the vast hulks of space craft crashed to the surface, to stark rock. Those that live on Schrott either live in small towns built form scrap metal or live inside the remains of space craft creating cities in the remains. Schrott and the 91st by extension is controlled by the Mechanicus. The vehicles and equipment of the 91st consist of either experimental or salvaged war machines, brought to life from the Vault to serve the Imperium to either prove themselves worthy or rebuilt from the dead to keep the fight going.

Some examples of the Experimental weapons are the Sonic Emitter Cannon of the "Demolisher" Leman Russ named "The Shatterer", the "Tornado" Heli Vendetta, "Banshee" Rocket Tank (Battle Tank) and more.

Salvaged machines like the "Burning Vengence" Demolisher were brought back to life to serve, itself being a Rhino chassis, hardened with armor plates and given a round heavy turret with a demolisher cannon, originally captured from enemy troops while on campaign, rebuilt, improved and sent against its previous owners.

The 91st is primarily armored but has enough infantry to be a force to be reckoned with. It is supplemented by the Experimental Exo-Suit division known as "Section 9", the best of the best wearing experimental exo-suits and wielding powerful coilguns being nearly the equivalent of Space Marines but lacking the genetic augmentation. They are few in number but fight fiercely.

New machines are constantly uncovered within the depths of the Vault or salvaged from the battlefield. A Crassus armored assault transport is nearing completion and the blueprints of a heavy combat mech have been recently discovered within the archives, the prototype machines are somewhere within the Vaults and the search has begun.

i.e I want to have an Knight but im not going to pay $140 or whatever, so I designed my own and plan on scratch building them.

I dont have picutres here, but otherwise... its homebrew army,
19th Regiment of Nadir, 2nd Combined Battalion
Nadir is planet for 40K universe rather OK. No Death World, no Cadia "I see into Abaddon's bedroom". Aside of minor cultist activity in last few hundreds years, main problem are few Eldar raiding parties which targets industrial megapolis and underground facilities on the southern continent. But most of population doesnt know war as everyday scenery. What brings men (and women, but, truth to be told, I dont have single female model yet) to Nadir regiments of IG is harsh enviroment combining dry, dusty steppe with seasonal torrential rains. Sand, heavy rains and specific local vegetation makes Nadir harsh to machinery and lungs. So, its usually seen better to volunteer into IG (and not PDF) and leave planet because its clearly better to have head chopped off by some ork, than live two thirds of year in dust and one third in sticky dust bog! (thats called effective propaganda, by the way)

But because of Nadir enviroment local regiments has some specifics. First is camouflage which combines sand yellow with dark green of local xenoak trees. Except Hellhounds. When you spit promethium across half of battlefield, its useless to have camouflage. Or maybe drivers of those tanks are mad that none dares to repaint their tanks. Than it is tactics. Because you dont know which part of army will give up in fighting with sand, water, mud and some aggressive corrosive fungus, Nadir regiments use variety of tactics and doesnt rely on one style like "stomp them with our infinite numbers" or "what our tanks doesnt shoot, they run over". In Nadir regiment you can usually find heavy artillery pieces, Leman Russ attack squadrons, gunship drop troops even mechanized infantry and so on... And there are rumours about some psykers deployed in chosen battalions... In the result, when something doesnt work, bugger it, we have backup plan. And when backup plan doesnt work, bugger it, we still die standing and trying.

Of course, sometimes Nadir regiments lack the focus in some areas, but usually, the jack-of-all-trades style and careful attitude of commanders works well. Just one thing. Dont talk Nadirs about Inquisition. Never. They dont like those elitist fanatics. The little problem with cultist activity hundereds years ago, y'know.

I have Cadians and don't particularly feel like re-painting them all to be home-brew though I'd probably have a lot more fun with it that way.

If I had my way, my IG would be Mordians. I've liked them from the time I started but was too young/stupid to figure out where to get them in bulk when I originally started playing 10 ish years ago. I had to go with whatever I could get at the local GW mall store, which now no longer exists. When I got back into playing I had about 30 plastic and 10 metal Cadians along with some busted up Catachans. I do have one squad of 10 Valhallans that I send to violent deaths every game as well...

I really do wish that some of the less marketed (was gonna say popular, but I guess that's not necessarily true) armies had their own plastic models and could be easily purchased and built as a wysiwyg force without hundreds of extra dollars and hours. A wall of Mordians in blue dress uniform would look amazing IMO, as would some swaggy dress tanks.
