I use my honour guard the most, combined with LRC. My sternguard are great I have 6 man squad with heavy flamer and combi meltas. They kill there points worth but always get taken out. Not used the vanguard as they seem like just and exspnsive assualt squad.

I like the honour gurad with standard as they all get a extra attack. so with a chapter master and 4 guard (inc the champ) I manage to take out a fiar bit with them. That and a 2+ save. The champ helps keep the attention off my HQ too as he accepts the chalenges, there only down side is no invol and 1 wound.

Stern guard are good too but all depand s on what you equip with. there spec ammo is an allround bonous but they combi weapons etc mesan your horde or tank hunting.

My own chapoter, The Broken Swords. Almost a full company.

I love the HG.

They may cost as much as a Rhino per model, but hey, what the heck!

Look at the GW website man, the thing that kills me is that I know you have the codex and you can't figure it out.

Sternguard are ranged special infantry

Vanguards are elite close combat infantry.

Use your army builder. Play around and see how expensive vanguards can get. They can get more pricey per model than terminators.

Garbage unit. Don't buy them, don't field them.

Sternguards need to be catered to specific enemies.

Preferably in a drop pod.

If you're going against a mech army you can combat squad them. Drop them in close to your target(s) and use meltaguns/combimelta's. You may pop a tank or two.

If you're going against a horde army. Preferably of little to no Armor save. Flamers/heavy flamers.

Regardless. Without enough support after a drop pod insertion behind enemy lines. Your 300 point sternguard squad can possible be wiped after two rounds of being placed on the table.

Honor guard are primarily a close combst unit but do have bolt guns to revert to. Only gakky thing about them is no medic for FnP and they can't purchase bikes.

A chapter master can only get honor guards. They're fun to play with, I believe they have Articifer armor for a 2+ save but other than that....I don't know.

Unless we know what you got, or your play style. I'd say all three could be completely useless to you.

I don't think the point of the post was to pic one out better than the other. I for one am not a player and most likely never will field my blood angels but it was my intention to allow posters to give their preferred choice and why as everyone has a unique opinion. I agree it depends how and what each person has combination wise but it was just to get an idea of what others think about these units and post their views on why.

I'm sure they are all good units but from the results many people have voted Sternguard

Almost all SM kits will fit together without problem. Apart from clam-shell character kits, they're identical fittings.
So, a Sternguard kit will spread over to around more models from other kits.
There are 16 shoulderpads in there, with 8 combi wepaons, multiple flashy Bolters, and some special weapons.
5 legs with 'skirts', 7 torso-fronts, 5 backpakcks.
13 heads, and masses of emblems and 'stuff'.
Add in a Heavy Flamer and Heavy Bolter with backpacks, that's a lot of bits to fit on a set of Tactical torsos. 14 Bolter--type weapons plus specials, heavies and pistols.

I use Sternguard for their special ammo. Put them with Pedro Kantor and they score, and get better basic-bolter shots.
Vanguard Vets look good, but cost lots to kit out, and are not shooty.
Honour Guard aren't usually able to score, but get more options.

By the poll, I would say sternguard but I use both stern and honor in my Sally lists so..

sternguard because they are just so versatile with their different bolter ammunition not to mention you can kit them for any role (anti tank - combimelta, anti horde - combi flamer, anti marine - combiplasma)

It's looking pretty clear that most prefer the sterns because of their versatile abilities and rules from 6th edition. Plus the extras which come with the pack which can easily be custom used with other models makes it a clear winner but I guess the thread is still new and there us time for voters to go another route.

Another thing to consider is that from a modeling POV, Sternguard + Vanguard = Honor Guard.

The new sternguard kit is very baroque. Tons of bling and detail. So much, that they would not fit in well with my existing vets if just built purely from the kit. However, if you toss a power weapon into the mix, they make very nice honor guard. So some were built as such. Others were watered down with tactical squad parts, to bring them more in line with the rest of my forces.

The vanguard are not quite as over-ornamented. Probably because a sternguard level of bling would just get sucked into the air intake of their jump packs and cause them to crash. Still, nice looking minis.

Vanguard for me. They can assault on turn 2, and a skillful general will make sure the 1 turn they are travelling will end with them ending their move behind LoS blocking terrain so they wont get shot at. And if you can't pull this off, it's always good to take a jumppack chaplain with them, with stormshield. Since he can't take artificer armor, he wont make for a great bullet sponge (also, his 2 wounds wont help). Shield eternal is a waste on him as he only has 2 wounds, but he can use the shield to soak up non-S8 low AP fire coming at them, and pass on any small arms fire on a lookout sir roll of 2+ to his comrades who have the same armor save. The Chappy is useful because he makes the entire squad fearless, and able to re-roll failed hits in the initial round of cc.

They can bring an obscene amount of power weapons (including AP2 power axes that can "hide" in the squad and not be challenged) and with the amount of their attacks, they can easily wipe the floor with almost any enemy cc unit except hammernators.

Well honor guard seems to be slowly climbing. Would be great if people who already have one or all of the poll squads to post some pics so we can see them in all their glory
