I am curious as to whether there might be interest in a complete change of the rules of 40K to bring in modifiers and 2D6 for determining different rolls. Moving away from the bucket of 1d6 model.
Is there any interest or has anyone already done this? How does it play?
I have a vision of having the game include objective markers and scenarios that have to be completed to win the game, not just "let's kill each other". The model count would probably be brought down severely and I also envision barely any vehicles on the table, most of the focus being on units. So something like a predator tank would be rare to see on the table. Horde armies would still exist for other factions. Weapon ranges would be brought down lower on a lot of stuff as well to balance the game.

I wonder if we might not be able to take 40K into the WarmaHordes direction and use 2d6 plus the model characteristics to overcome a threshold number.
Boost-able by rolling an additional d6 in some instances.

Wouldn't d12 work better? 2d6 requires every roll to be separate or lots of pairs of unique dice. Would work on a small scale I guess, but seems tedious.

Would work on small scale?
Combat patrol scale orkx/nids/guards could turn this into a chore.
40k, due to sheer number of models that can be featured, need to have a single dice for every roll that is expected to be rolled more then once per squad (aka leadership)

Go play "Combat Zone". It was a competitor to 40k about a decade ago - small scale 3-4 squads per side, solid rules, and a "build your own unit" ruleset.
Apparantly it's being re-released too, can't remember the details though.
Trust me when I say its better to just go play a game that is what you want 40k to be already then it is to create yet another re-write nobody will pay attention to

I tried the 2d6 with modifiers thing, it stops working the instant you scale the game up past about five models. It's not a bad idea if you want to handle single-attack models individually but it doesn't scale at all.

Turn the whole squad's attacks into a single roll. Move the game away from the weird individual/mass balance they have now and firmly towards mass.

Byzantine and would require an excess of dice. In all honesty the problems are with the numbers more so than the type of die; I've established it's possible to have a broader and more granular spread of stats while sticking with the d6 as your only die.

I think the ides of putting modifiers on the 'front end', rather than scattered and hidden all over the place in special rules and tables is a very sensible idea.
(Most other modern war games do this.)
I agree with AnomanderRake, if you use a D6 intelligently, you do not need to use other dice sizes or multiples of D6.
if you use 2D6 to determine the entire effect of a units assault or shooting, then the list of modifiers has to be very long to detail the conditions of both units.This is not very practical in games with diverse units like 40k.
