I'm just about to finish purchasing want I need for my 2k SM army and before I finish it completely I want to try to get a game plan of what my next army should be. I like to do tons of research on an army before I dive into buying models, painting and playing so getting a head start now is key.

My current (and only) army is a Raven Guard successor chapter army. Fairly balanced when it comes to SM armies but I lean more towards ASM and Scouts. I'd like to start a second army that differs from what I already have, model/painting wise and gameplay wise.

So here's your chance to convince me why I should start ????? as a second army.

Orks - nothing like a green tide and screaming Waagh! at your opponent. Plus the conversions. Come on, what Ork would not love a Trukk powered by a couple of squigs on a treadmill?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Hmmm, for something "unlike" raven guard...

Necrons, Tau, Eldar or Dark Eldar, Imperial Guard/AM.
Bonus points if your 2nd army can ally with your first.

Anything xenos is going to be pretty different. I'd start there. As orks are probably the awesomest xeno, I'd probably do that, though eldar are going to be more dissimilar to what you played before.

Also, CSM might work. They're not that different, being a power armor army, but are going to be the most different way to play the kind of army that you're used to. Plus, they have some strange stuff that regular SM doesn't have as well.

Well that's nearly half the armies out there. But I would really like to be able to ally my 2nd army with my SM. That way I can play them when they are small and slowly build it up over time.

Out of the ones I named off, only dark eldar can't ally with your marines.

WAAAAAGH!!

So much fun to build and paint. Orks will give you a more light-hearted approach to gaming, but can still prove very powerful. Also, everyone loves playing against orks so you will have a lot of good games with happy opponents.

Even if people lose to Orks, they seem to enjoy it. It also gives you a chance to get in to conversions and looted vehicles. Very fun stuff.

I already have the Orks from the AOBR set but my number #1 and maybe only issue with Orks is that is takes tons of models to build an army. Meaning more $$$ and time I have on hand at the moment. Poor excuse I know.

I'd go Imperial guard, they just got a new codex (so people absolutly infuritated that Lasguns are not assault 10, STR 10 rending, will be selling their minis on ebay ) and the codex is solid. the army allies well with SMs and makes SENSE doing so. you can even bill it as the local regiment for your SM chapter's home world and fluff it as they often work together etc. and despite being Imperial they play VERY VERY differnt from SMs. while SMs are a very quiality based army. IG are firm belviers that quantity has a quality of it's own.

it does require a lot of minis normally, but if you run a heavy mech list you're not too bad.

What kind of player are you? Are you a shooty or assault player? Are you a hordy or small elite few player? Maybe a combination of all of them?

How about money? Is it an issue? Do you want a different play style from what you are doing now?

Do you play for fun, do tournies, or an "I must win with plastic toy soldiers"?

With these, we can help you out better instead of just guessing for you.

Dark Eldar man. I've played 5 armies, and they're by and far the most fun I've ever had with 40k. Between modeling, playing and the fluff. They rule.

Right now I just have one army. Raven Guard successor chapter "Night Ravens". Mostly assault/jump pack based. A couple of Scouts Squads (Sniper & CCW), 2 Tactical Squad w/Rhinos, then a mixture of Heavy Support (Dreadnought, Devastator or whatever seems to be working best). Money isn't a huge issue but I have my limits of course. I'd prefer a different play style. I play for fun. I like to win but I'm okay with losing as long as I'm playing a fun game with people I like.

So I guess an army that differs from what I currently have, ideally can ally with SM so I can use the new army with them as I help expand it. Armies that have tons of models and units may not be the best as they tend to take more time to model/paint and $$$ but I'm still open to them. I'll probably just have to read every codex front to back to see what I'll settle with.

It depends what you like the look of I really took to the new tau how they kind of remind me of a mass effect or some other advanced kind of army I started up about 1500 points and I really enjoy them also their fluff and competitiveness are also great

I know you said Orks weren't really the way you want to go, but of all the armies I've started (and there have been a lot) they are by far my favourite, fun to build, paint, and especially play!!

I can honestly say that I win a good percentage of my games with them too!!

The battle force would definitely be your friend, or at least it was mine!!

I am a Tyranid player. Love the minis. Hate painting gaunts though. Some people claim they are garbage, other claim they are bad and some more claim they are good.

Thing is they can't ally so can't use them unless in a friendly game people should in most cases let you use them as allies. (unless of course they need to win with plastic toy soldiers. )

So if you want to use allies, then basically you are using Imperium armies and Eldar.
