Hello all, I just moved into an area where people actually play 40k again on a regualr basis and was looking to get back in, but I wish to do so with something new. For 10 years I have played Space Wolves, Nids, Eldar, and Chaos. I have been looking between Gray Knights, Tau, and Necrons and would welcome any advice or opinions.

Try IG or AM as it is called these days. It has good fluff, the only model with 2 warlord traits and colonel I eat miral landsharks for breakfast Straken. They also play a tad like nids.

Just what ever army you go with find out first what army build is the best and work towards that. example eldar waveserpent spam is only right way to build the tau is gunline and three riptides etc. I have learned build building you arny any other way is a wast of money and time .
my only big problem with 40k is how limited you are on building your armys

How are you not tired of behaving this way yet?

Which one appeals you the most? This is the most important question. Someone playing an army just because it's the 'strongest there is' gets bored easily.
Second, it is interesting to play something that the others do not, giving your meta more variability. If there are already 3 Necron players, a fourth one would hardly bring anything new in the strategic scenario.
Third, if you really care about winning, then pick up the army you can build more powerful lists with. From your selection, Tau > Necron > GK, nowadays. But if the meta already knows a lot of anti-Tau tricks, bringing something different would be more interesting, as said earlier. Study your meta, but your taste must come first.

It is only useless because of the way you choose to play, not because it is actually useless. In actuality if you played the game like the creators intended it to be played you would have a giant army of awesome sauce.

I'm starting a Grey Knights army and I have to say, they look fantastic. I just love 'em.
Particularly amazing if you like conversions (between Inquisitorial henchmen and Dreadknights, which need extensive conversions to look good).

How so because i don't see how my army any good because i don't run a gravstar and i use a tac squad instead of bikers and i don't use any flyers. How is the game spouse to be played because any other build but the best build is the wrong way to be building and playing your army

If the only point is to win a game, then you can try to target stronger builds, but by the time you actually have painted models, the meta will likely have moved on to two or three other "it" things.
Of course, if you really want to win games, learn ways to discreetly poison your opponents. It takes a lot more skill to pull this off than not, and if your opponent isn't doing it, then he's just not as skilled as you are. Not trying to poison you is sort of like taking a bad list - it's just making it easier for you to win. His loss.
In any case, I think the OP would get much better responses if he indicated WHY he was thinking about starting those particular armies, instead of merely listing them and opening it up to a popularity contest.

has it occured to you that maybe if you can't ever win the problem might not be your list?
the space marine codex is one of the best "everything's useful" codexes in the game

Whaaat?
1. Does everything have to be for the purpose of winning? You could build a terribly impractical SM army but if you like it, who gives half a gak.
2. It's hard to make a useless SM army.

Ignore zilka86, he really is of no help with this sort of thing. I'd parrot what others have been saying in take what you like most, as you'll be spending a lot of time and money on them. What your mindset towards gaming (i.e. if winning is the be-all, end-all or not) will probably play into this. So in addition to what army you want, figure out what build you want too, as unless you have a lot of money on hand you may get bored of a list that doesn't interest you without the means to get the models you need for the list you do want.

I don't understand this post Zilka. You don't like how limited 40k armies are? They aren't limited, when people's only mission is building the best of the best, like you suggested, prevents variety. So you are the problem that you despise. I try and build my list on a variety of aspects: cool models, fluff, theme, current mood, weather, basically anything but the current killer list.

Well you already have 2 marine armies, so I'd say Tau or Crons make the most sense. Do either of them have a model you always wanted to paint or anything like that? It's a lot easier to get enthusiastic about an army when you love painting it.
