According to the press release, Games Workshop is giving away snap-fit marines to 200 select stores participating in FCBD 2014. Seems to be a bit of outreach by GW by finally advertising their game and giving away some promo items.

GW actually doing marketing? Say it isn't so! I knew the ground was a bit cold this morning.

When I saw it on Natfka I thought it was some joke/trolling, but the link to the FCBD website proved otherwise (they probably wouldn't try to ruin their reputation with a niche gag like that). Hope a store near me is in on this so I can get some free bolter veteran sergeants.

There's no FCBD within a thousand miles of here, but good on GW for doing something not gakky for once.

First they actually do end of line product sales on terrain and now giving away minis in partnership with an externally run event.

Why not? Free minis for some, let those people enjoy the free plastic.

Why not? because it's a good idea. This is something we're genuinely not used to from GW. This isn't disappoint, disapproval or dismay, it's shock.

Yeah. This was an intelligent idea from GW. One of the 1st announcements from them in a while that doesn't have people running to get the pitchforks. I can definitely see why the disbelief is high on this one (it is a 180 from their usual sleeziness).

Good. Get the word out about the game.

I have 6 participating stores in my area. Now I just have to hope 1 of the ones I will go to is a GW select store.

Yeah, only 200 stores means it's going to be hit or miss. It is kind of a half-measure because you can't just dump some free minis on people and think that's going to get them to dump the several thousand it now takes to build an army. The smart money would have been to send the minis out to comic/game stores rather than just comic stores which I hope they've done. That way, the operators know something of the game and answer questions, point to product, etc.

That is what I am banking on. I think the "comic stores" that they selected also carry their product (are also a gaming store). Which is good news...maybe...for me since 4 out of the 6 participating stores nearby also do 40k and fantasy.

I work in a participating FCBD comic store (our store shows up in the store finder link) and haven't heard about this promotion. There's no info about it on Diamond retailer's website. I contacted my Diamond representative for further info but does anyone know how stores can take part in this?

I don't want to be that guy, but - contacting your rep for info IS the best bet since this deal is between Diamond and GW. However, would anyone else at Diamond working promotions or press be able to give you an idea?

Well I'll be damned that's a surprise, the local is definitely doing free comic book day, but as they also sell GW product already I have my doubts about whether they'll be doing the free marines as well.

Of course, anyone else could just walk into a GW they haven't been before and play dumb to get a free marine. However, it's not really about getting the model really, it's about a part of GW that isn't just Forgeworld actually taking themselves out of the fortress to go generate interest.

Don't they give those away to everyone new who comes into a LGS anyways?

Good idea promoting it as FCBD though - may get some people in and interested (before they're terrified by sticker shock from GW prices).

Damn. I was really hoping it would be some kind of Limited edition promo figure to win over new fans with amazingness. But I guess not...

Still, a step in the right direction I would say.

I'm happy to see that GW may be taking some steps to actually come around from the Dark Side. Maybe someone in the management finally tossed the Emperor into the Death Star's core.

Didn't you hear, SM are selling so bad these days they have to give them away!!

Good move GW, it's just amazing when a small promo is a big deal for them.
