It should be, and it is in many places.

Driving on a cell phone, texting or otherwise, has been proven to be at least as inhibiting as driving under the influence of alcohol.

and yet, its legal for cops to be on their cells/radios/laptops while driving....

And how fast do those tanks go? I doubt you are going 60mph in a crowded place.

Super Hornets go pretty fast, though.

I've also noticed that pilots have mics in their helms, making them hands free, which is usually legal on roads.

It's in the oxygen mask, if you're talking about fighters.

And again, much more training and time is put into piloting. You don't file a flight plan to go to the store. You also tend to not run into traffic jams in the sky, or construction, school zones, or planes parked along the side of the air with a flat tire. You don't have before and after action meetings for a run to the store. Nor does it take a college degree and millions of dollars worth of training to become a licensed driver. The other pilots are often people you know, whereas most of the time the people in traffic are strangers. The number of deaths in tank related or plane related crashes every year isn't even a blip on the radar compared to car deaths.

I'd disagree with some of that. Formation flying requires a fair amount of concentration, and you're very close to other aircraft. The marshal stack behind a carrier could very well be described as a coordinated aerial traffic jam. You do a lot of things at once while flying, including, in worst case scenarios, completely reseting the cockpit electronics ~20 seconds from having to land on an incredibly small patch of ship lined with aircraft and people on either side.

But your point's more or less correct; there's more training for it, and moreover, there's less reading. Talking on the phone while driving isn't something I freak out about; it's texting/fiddling with the phone that's the killer, in my eyes. The reason we invented heads-up displays in aircraft (and now some cars) was specifically to get the eyes out of the cockpit/dashboard, because it's important to spend as much time as possible keeping aware of your surroundings.

But I'd also be fine with just exempting former pilots/tanker/helo wombats from those laws, too. Either way works for me.

That would be great for the Air Force recruitment guys. "...and when you're discharged, you can text and drive!" Hot chick enrollment would skyrocket.

And all of your planes crash because said hot chick was texting instead of flying the plane

And yet an Apache pilot routinely flies his aircraft and works works several radio nets.

So what we can really gather here is that its more dangerous to drive on the roads with cellphone talking soccer moms and over testosteroned pickup drivers, than it is to fly an Apache in a combat zone.

That sounds about right.

no its not, its a blanket exception, they are on personal phones all the time making personal calls, its not just for emergencies.

unless cops are now texting 911 on police issues I phone 5's....

not sure what the law is in the states, but here its along the lines of "if the device is nesesary for navigation or to do your job (so GPS, polic, fire, even utility company vans with laptops, taxis with radios ect) are exempt.

I 100% do not have a problem with it, I just think it should be legal for everyone, but if you crash while using a device, the fine should just be increased or something. No need to punish those of us capable of brething AND chewing gum at the same time because of all the mouth breathers out there.

but hey, everythings catered to the lowest common denominator now a days, so why make this the exception?

I work in safety, easysauce and I gotta say that your mindset is what leads to a whole lot of accidents. It is that whole "I've done this and I'm smart, so I'm totally safe" mindset that makes people do stupid crap behind the wheel and I'd be remiss if I didn't call it out for what it is.

But let me do it like this let's do a little example.

How long do you need to look at your phone? Maybe...3 seconds? 5 if it is something big? Do you know how far a car going at 60 miles per hour travels in that time? About the length of a football field at 3 seconds. And this is a busy road, and who knows what hazards are on it.

Easy, I usually like your posts, but this is something you SHOULD have a problem with.
