My meta is just starting out. We currently only have 1 SM, 1 Tyrranids, 1 CSM, and 1 Militarum Tempestus player. Currently nobody is running any allied detachments. I want to get a friend into the hobby, but I'm unsure what to recommend him. I'd first say to go with whichever models he thinks look cool, but I wouldn't really know what to say if he would prefer something that can do well in our playgroup. So, if you were trying to get a balanced playgroup, which one army would you add to the previously mentioned list?

I am the kinda ork that takes his own washing machine apart, puts new bearings in it, then puts it back together, and it still works.

Balanced in what way? If you are talking good balance, then 40k is nothing worth while to you. You'll never reach it. There's such a disparity you'll never get it. If you mean fluffy, well I'd say IG as they are generally in all fights so they fit the narrative best with SM allied and Militarum Tempestus allied. CSM and Nids can be the big bads. Also, IG and Milit can be used as an ally for nids (it doesn't make entire sense but there's semi fluff for it) and CSM basically nab everything. Orks are also nice to see no matter what.

The Temestus player is going to have to go to AM/IG eventually. Grey knights would be an okay add. Orks are fun.

I'd honestly just recommend playing what he wants to play and calling it good.

Why? Scions is a perfectly decent book. It has about as much troops choice as tactical marines, with better HQ options.

I'm going to assume that balance here means "can have a representative of everything". So, for example, there is a horde that can be fielded, because you have tyranid, which also means the possibility of a monster mash. SM unlocks drop pods, raider lists, and bike lists.

Let's see. One of the missing types is a terminator list, and another is a proper mech list (razorspam only sort of counts). There also isn't much by means of high mobility (outside of an SM bike list).

So, yeah, I'd start with orks. They can run MANz lists, and can also run mech lists in both trukk and battlewaggon form. Plus, every gaming group should have an ork player.

I'd also consider eldar, as they can run mech skimmer lists and use psychic powers, though I think DE would be a bit better as they'd round out the meta a bit better, I think.

Eh. I think it comes more down to Scions actually being a rather limited book restricting one largely to only scions and not much else. Heck, can they even take vendettas? That and scions are within IG so the player will likely grow to add those to his force as a natural extension. Or some jazz like that.

I'm that Tempestus player . I'm hoping that they'll get a nice update in the future so that I won't have to rely on AM/IG as a crutch. Who knows, I still may ally with them at some point.

Anyway, thanks for the comments everyone

Go with what the new player thinks would be fun.

All armies can be "balanced" - its up to a player to make them "not fun".

Here are some examples;
* none of the tau players in my group runs more than one riptide
* neither eldar player uses more than 2 serpents or 1 wraithknight in a list.
* neither necron player runs "cron air"
* the only choas player never runs screamer star
* neither chaos player runs more than one hel drake
* None of the GK players ever ran psycannon spam

Of course, the gray area can happen when someone starts of rationalize something ("my army HAS to have rerolls on that to survive!").

Just understand Tempestus just came out, so they won't be getting any updates in the foreseeable future. Nothing to be embarrassed about, I just know I'd get bored with how limited the choices are.

And it's the reason I didn't say guard. There already is a guard player in the group. Once the base force org gets filled, I can guarantee it's only a (short) matter of time before guard units start showing up in the army as allies for the tempestus player.

I mean, it would be like saying the group doesn't have an eldar player - only an iyanden.

The game's fun is directly proportional to the number of ork players in the group.
