Subject: Anyone else think the mods on Dakka are great?
Mods here are great. They're probably the reason Dakka isn't like the other sites.
So I've chucked money at DCM, hoping the odd bit will turn into a pint or something when the Mods of the Month awards are given out.
There are many ways to mod a site, and some of them have made it into an art. Often fun to watch.

The effective, even-handed moderation is a big reason why I now primarily frequent DakkaDakka. I think the moderation is generally a good balance that allows plenty of room for discussion while keeping discussions generally topic-focused and reasonably free of repressive negativity.
The best thing I can personally say about DakkaDakka moderators is that they do a good job of promoting a healthy atmosphere for productive discussion. This might not be what some people are looking for, and some people may have different views about what a forum moderator's job should be, but I personally want to be able to have reasonably civil discussions about the TTG industry with people that have different viewpoints. DakkaDakka is the best place for that.

While I agree the Mods here do a good job, I think a large portion of it is the mentality of the average mini wargamer.
Yes, we get into vigorous debates on stuff. But it doesn't seem to descend into the extremely personally rude stuff I see on other subjects. All the forums I frequent (Druchii, Bugmans, the Round Table, Warhammer, Warhammer AU, and Dakka) all seem to be pretty polite. Even when things get heated, they only rarely seem to get personal. (Leaving the off-topic board aside, anyway...)
So we, the posters, do have a good deal to do with how well the Mods do their job. By policing ourselves pretty effectively, we allow the Mods to concentrate on the few real problem issues... be it problem subjects or problem posters.
The Mods here are very good though. I've never seen one use their Mod powers as a bludgeon like I have on other (non-wargaming) sites. They're also very good at recognizing that just because a discussion may be getting quite vigorous, or even a bit heated, that they don't need to step in until someone steps over the line and makes it personal... while not being hesitant at all about jumping in on the rare occasion that it DOES become personal.
Good work, Mods!
CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!
My job here is done.

I think the very character of Dakka is as much a due to the quality of moderation as the quality of the participants. I find that somehow Dakka's moderating team has been able to walk the fine line of encouraging discussion and disagreement while maintaining order and some semblance of civility.
It sounds simple, but it's a balance that many other forums don't achieve, often erring instead on the sides of either a iron glove that stifles debate or a laissez faire neglect resulting in general unpleasantness.
I think most of the Mods are good, there is one I think lets his personal interests cloud what he says a bit too much...but hey...not everybody is perfect.

What possesses people to start these threads are we back in school?
Anyway, it isn't even something that is a matter of opinion, the answer to the question is yes and no. You might as well ask if all coppers, soldiers, butchers, bakers, and candlestick makers are great.
Many are good, several don't even attempt to maintain an air of remote impartiality and therefore do an awful job.
Same as any profession. For every three McDonalds employees that are professional and have real integrity, there is one that will put a pube in your burger.
We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

Yeah, but you can certainly make observations about a group of them! The McDonald's employees at the 51 location south of town? Rough around the edges and a little shifty (they're all ex-cons) but competent enough. The one in the Student Center? Totally lazy. You'll be there a half an hour getting a soda. The one by the movie theater? Nice enough, real friendly people, but since that's where all their special needs hires go, you might have a difficult time with someone who's a little slow.
Dakka mods are a totally different animal, as a group, from the mods from a couple of other sites. Generally civil, generally competent, generally fair, generally useful.
It may be a circle-jerk, but I love the moderation on Dakka.
It's light enough to go unnoticed for the most part, and for that it seems like a thankless duty. Much of the time it's just locking redundant threads or the occasional warning that a thread is going off-topic or discussion has stagnated.
What's best is that mods can actually partake in discussion as normal members without seeming above or detached from everyone else.

The thread in a nutshell, ladies and gentlemen.
Or this.
Lord Bane: You think moderating is your ally. You merely adopted moderating; I was born doing it, molded by it...
And thanks dudes for your work. I've been on boards where the modding has gotten way out of control, its awesome to be here in our quasi-free-yet-totally-facist-40k-board.

Moderation of forums is a mugs game - its unpaid - often quite demanding once you're beyond 20 active users any one month - can take ages to sort out what are often very childish arguments between members (actually removing spam posts by spambots is the easy bit most of the time). Also worse still is sometimes you have to punish friends or people you rather do like.
Every now and then its good to thank the mods as more often than not most of the time that people interact with a mod doing their job its a negative experience. In my own experiences its always good to also hear of thanks from members who mods have clashed with in the past.
I think the mods do a darn good job with what can be a tricky and thankless job. Been lucky enough to meet a good number of them over the years at Adepticon and they seem like a really decent bunch of guys. And I'm grateful they do what they do because it allows Dakka to continue on.

That is the short version.
+1 to this.
Lord only knows they need about 2-3 to keep up with me when I'm hot.
Gits is a decent fellow himself . I've really enjoyed meeting the Dakkanauts in-person that I've had the privilege of doing so, one of the best things about this all really. Although threads like this might be a bit much

I've been on the wrong side of the mods a couple of times [too many glasses of wine and 40k General = trouble] but I've always found them to deal with any silliness firmly but with good humour. They have always been open to discussion about the issue and show a real sense of reluctance at having to issue sanctions.
So, it's a bit of a thankless task, but I think the Dakka mods are doing a great job.
Anyone else got any positive mod stories?
