How many avatars have you gone through? Two long term dakkanauts I read regularly just changed their avatars tonight, and it got me thinking.
I've never changed mine, not once. In five years and 7800+ posts, I still use the very first avatar I ever uploaded.
How about you guys? How many has it been for you? Do you find it confusing when people switch avatars? I often identify people by their avatars, and on more than one occasion have read something I either liked or hated, and looked to see who it was so I could pay attention to (or ignore) them in the future, only to find that they were someone I knew!
Of course, I also judge people by their avatars. There are a couple of times over the years where someone's avatar was strike one for me, and there's been at least one person that I've put on ignore just so I wouldn't have to see their avatar anymore.
I assume you're referencing me as I just changed mine to Dan of Dan Vs. fame
My first one was the Laughing Man avatar from Ghost in the Shell. Maybe two years ago I switched to Philosoraptor. I just like to change it every now and then. Have something new to look at I can definitely agree it confuses me as I get in the habit of identifying people by the avatars even more than their names.

Yeah, your change was one of the two that prompted this. (Along with Ouze, although his might have changed earlier and I'm just NOTICING it today...) I like your new one though. I did get used to philosoraptor, but I can't begrudge someone a change every now and then.
Yeah, daedalus, I wanted to change mine for the Mat Ward thing but my anti-virus software strongly recommended against using the glitterfy website, so I just skipped that particular event.
I dunno. Maybe when I hit 10000 posts (sometime late this year, probably) I'll switch to a new one. It'll be hard to let go of Stone though...
I changed it quite a few times recently as my interests changed. But now I think I'll leave mine as soldier since I really like the guy. Anyone who'll only use his grenades to blow himself up is a true man.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I have not been on Dakka long enough for me to say that I still have my first one and have it mean something. But once I start my painting log I plan to change it to one of the models I paint.

The only time I changed my avatar was over Christmas to give it a santa hat.

I should really paint some of my models instead of browsing forums.

I like to change up my dirty skank porn star avatars on a regular basis.

Different avatars for different forums, serious ones for serious forums and less serious for the others
Been on the Internet for a while now (9600 baud on an Amiga 500) and now have lost count of the avatars and sigs I've used, but once on a forum I rarely change avatars

EDIT: never mind. 3 now. Got it working! Don't think I will be keeping this one very long though. I can already tell it's going to be quite annoying for all involved, including me.
I have had 2 that I can remember, not counting a couple I uploaded for a couple minutes and decided I didn't like (gifs why you no animate?). If anybody can actually identify what I used before the current tracked aircraft carrier I will be impressed.
Kind of made an account, posted for a while, then went into hibernation for a few years. When I came back I decided that I might as well grab a new avatar.

Probably about 10 (maybe less) or so, not including Christmas variations.
I used to change mine when I got bored of the old one, about every 6-7 months.
Really, the main reason I changed to this TK one recently (well, actually 2 avatars ago) is because I finally decided to use one of my models (that I'm really happy about how it turned out) as one.

I've been using this avatar for years on different websites and I never change it.

Actually I've been wondering about the source of the porn skank in your current avatar lol, who is it?

In honor of this thread, I've gone back to my original old-school avatar.
I like consistency in avatars quite a bit, and I've only had this one, another for X-mas time and a 3rd one with Sean Connery's head on an Ork body (to represent my Waaagh Dakka model).
I don't change my avatar too often, and when I do it's usually some new take on myself. Since I'm on an Endless Fantasy Tactics kick right now I'm the risen warrior avatar...... that has my beard and hair cut.
So mostly my changed avatars are me in some weird way
