With all the pandemonium over the new edition, some are excited to see what's coming, some of folks are talking about getting out, or having got out, and shortly some will be talking about how the new edition is amazing and has rekindled their passion for the game.

Simply put, what is the last edition of the 40k rules you bought or will buy?

If you skipped a year, just select the most recent choice.

Mods: I realize this is technically a 40k poll, but I chose "Dakka Discussions" as I wanted the input of those who don't play anymore also.

Looks like the mods didn't listen to you, shame it would have been interesting to get the opinions and views of the older 40k gamers.

I am struggling with my feelings on this matter. I chose "I might buy 7th depending on reviews, reports, etc" because the possibility of me buying into 7th is there, however it would take a lot for me to hand over money for a new edition this close to 6th's release.

I am absolutely disgusted with GW over making 6th edition a 23 month affair, and cannot find it within me to give them the benefit of the doubt that this is a one time occurrence, and that is why I can't see myself jumping onto a potential bi-annual release schedule for new editions. If 7th sells well what reason would GW have for keeping an edition around for 4 or 5 years? Why would they turn down near automatic sales from the majority of their fan base every two years? Short answer, they won't. If 7th does well this will be the new status quo. I have no interest in rewarding that mindset, and I am lucky enough to not be in a situation where I need to buy into 7th.

My group of friends is rather casual and open to house rules. Two of the members are also saddled with lots of real life responsibilities that severely limits their gaming funds, so any excuse not to buy a new rule book will likely be met with enthusiasm. That takes the urgency out of having to decide now about 7th and makes playing 6th or a hybrid rule set are stronger possibility. If my group of friends dissolves and I lack regular opponents, or they all decide they want to play 7th, then I will consider buying in, but those two occurrences seem unlikely. Even then I think I'd be just as likely to shelve my armies indefinitely and find some other game to occupy my time. So, while I might buy 7th, in all likelihood I won't.

I will buy 7th because it actually fixes the very things I dislike about the game so far (although it does ruin FOC a bit and so on too) so ill give them my money for this book, but if they do it again after 2 years then im not going further. So my answer is 7th and onward unless they be a pain about 8th edition.

A new day, a new time zone.

I've been hearing people bitch about GW gaking all over the game and it's players since they showed how little they understood of the fluff and rules that made the game fun when the big change to 3rd edition happened.

Given that I've had fun with every edition of the game so far (although as a Soritas first and foremost, it's been damn hard road sometimes...), the last one I play will be either the last one GW ever puts out, or the one I was playing when a random blimp falls out of the sky and crushes me in a tragically hilarious death.

Given the amount of people and communities I've seen drop Warhammer 40k, and a dramatic uptick in competition in many and varied fonts, along with near crippling costs associated with a torrent of rules seen as overpriced, "milking", or bad, I think there's a big difference his time than past history.

Go check the 13 part series at Masterminis.net on the subject written by a gentlemen actually very knowledgeable about running a corporate business and being in the models industry.

If they don't shape up, 7E will be the last version for many folks. Not by choice. (or they get bought out and start producing a game with the same standards as their competition and bring back a runaway success and become the dominant market holder again)

Swap "friends" to "internet" and that's what I will be doing unless 7th is truly purchase-worthy.

7th edition may very well be my last edition.

The timeframe which 7th edition got released really makes me wonder at its quality. Either they started working on it immediately after 6th came out which shows how poorly they thought 6th was to begin with or they only just started it after customer complaints started mounting up and made them think they better get their gak together and do a quick fix.

Neither is a good scenario in my eyes.

Their focus on making everything cinematic and story driven at the expense of quality rules is also driving me away. If I want to play a game with a focus on story I'll go hang with my D&D group, not play 40k.

Double Fine Adventure, Wasteland 2, Nekro, Shadowrun Returns, Tropes vs. Women in Video Games, Planetary Annihilation, Project Eternity, Distance, Dreamfall Chapters, Torment: Tides of Numenera, Consortium, Divinity: Original Sin, Smart Guys, Raging Heroes - The Toughest Girls of the Galaxy, Armikrog, Massive Chalice, Satellite Reign, Cthulhu Wars, Warmachine: Tactics, Game Loading: Rise Of The Indies, Indie Statik, Awesomenauts: Starstorm, Cosmic Star Heroine, THE LONG DARK, The Mandate, Stasis, Hand of Fate, Upcycled Machined Dice, Legend of Grimrock: The Series, Unsung Story: Tale of the Guardians, Cyberpunk Soundtracks, Darkest Dungeon, Starcrawlers

Don't know yet.

I want to actually READ 7th before i give up all hope.

If i don't like it i'm out though. Didn't like 6th much, and the game has begun to bore me.

If i do drop the game altogether i'll be having one hell of a yard sale though

Alot of it depends on my local meta. If it turns out to be a bunch of WAACs spamming nothing but riptides a D weapons, I'm switching to warmachine and Infinity...already started buying. Most likely I'll do what I did with D&D 4th edition....keep playing 3.5. Which is a shame, I've been playing 40K since RT.

I actually went and bought 4th edition yesterday to take a look, might try that for a while instead of 7th. (Started a short bit before 6th edition so I feel double burned by its short lifespan). I do not plan to purchase 7th edition and will need to see something amazing happen to bring me back. I keep hearing about how awesome 4th was from many people and my group says it was their favorite so I will have people to play it with while I remain in the area.

I switch to Mordheim and Infinity when the 7th rumors started and I have been having the most fun with Mordheim(w/ balancing house rules) so far. I want to stick with 40k current but just don't enjoy the game anymore and 7th looks like it will amplify what I already don't like. Hope 4th has a place for me.

Well, considering my fiancee and I dropped the money on the stinking rulebook exactly 3-4 months ago, Yes, we will be picking up the new edition, but neither one of us is at all happy about it.

If only GW would advertise, like the rest of the known world....

Not that we aren't looking forward to possible rule fixes, and dreading what will be broken next, but yeah, we got BURNED hardcore on that lifespan.

It may not be for a while though.

Whatever edition turns the game impossible to play in a fun way will be my last.

6th is, an 7th seems to be, salvageable with a little effort.

I will continue playing but I don't see the point in buying 7th for what is essentially a small patch.

Well, I'll continue playing 40k but so far I don't really like what I have seen about the new edition.

GW is unable to provide a playable edition - pickup and tournament wise.

I'm going to wait until we get all the rules and then let 7th settle down a bit. It might likely be my last 40k edition though, at least as a player. After ruining Necron fluff and now seemingly shafting them again with Psychic Powers...meh. I want to play 40k when playing 40k, not another version of WHFB. Magic in 7th absolutely sucked and ruined the game and now, GW does the exact same thing again for 40k. Great. GW is the only company in the world where as a employee, you can do an absolutely trash job and still continue to be employed.

As a ref, I'll definitely continue. There's a lot of work coming up, mainly checking what has to be banned for comp. Unfun is almost 100% going to be banned regardless

Not buying anything for 7th though.

If you are referring to unbound, it probably won't be anywhere near as bad as everyone seems to expect. Apart from the numbers of normal players who just want to have fun, and won't go for the cheese, unbound won't be much different than what we have now.

We have:
-1 Primary detachment
-1 Allied detachment
-1 Inquisitorial detachment
-1 to god-knows-how-many Dataslate additions
-1+ Formations

And then double that at over 2k.

WAAC spammy players will go for the cheese regardless of unbound or battle forged, and it's unlikely that they will be changing their lists much, as they can get their OP combos easily enough with what we already have.

A possible positive effect of Unbound is letting underpowered armies like CSM and Nids get a leg up by doing stuff that is normally impossible.

Well, I'm organizing local tournaments in 40k for the store owner and I will continue to do it in the new edition.

But it appears that we will see less players showing up since some of them who participated on a regular basis moved to WM/H.

Talking as a ref. Unfun at tournaments would be an ugly mess, similar to Unfun in PUGs. Overall, 7th looks like the worst modern 40k ruleset so far and with every new tidbit of leaks, it gets worse. 7th is specifically catered to sell models while completely leaving rules behind. The entire ruleset just cries "We're desperate!".

As a player, I stick with WHFB, as I like Goblins, for the fluff and fun feel, and I stick to FoW whose ruleset is so, so, SO, SO much superior to anything GW has ever put out. Not to mention that an entire FoW army is cheaper than a single rulebook by GW.

I find some of the changes in 7th very desireable, like the new Vehicle Damage Chart where only a 7+ result causes an explosion. I might be missing something, but I fail to see what's so "apocalyptic" about the new edition, so I plan to simply move on to it once it's released.

I don't see myself "quitting" WH40k anytime soon.
