When building an army, or playing a game, which point total do you prefer and why? I'm curious to see whether players prefer smaller skirmish games, or bigger, more diverse games.

2k+.
When people come to play with me or I go to play with them, I tend to stay over to play with an awful lot of models; and my games against my wife are great time wasters so we often go really, really big.
Average "it's sunday and there's nothing to do" games with the wife or my closest of friends can easily breach 10k points.
It's worth noting that I play a heavily custom system though which makes the game much less clunky for huge games.

Rare for us to play a sub 2.5k game at our club. Tourneys are about the only time we're not rocking big lists.
3.5k with Lords of War this week!

I enjoy games from 500 (fast and intense) to 1500 (you can field most toys you have). So I am saying 1000.
Notes:
1: More points implies more time, something I usually can´t spare.
2: The you-go-I-go system makes the game quite boring for me after 2000 points.

Mostly 1500 - 1750, I still often play with guys who are not that firm with the rules so even those games often last a whole afternoon.

1500 for me, though I'd prefer 1850 with Daemons or Grey Knights but our games would take too long as quite a few of them are 2 vs. 2.

When my friends and I played often, we would do 2500 point games in an evening. Now that we don't play as much, and have only done a few 6th ed games, generally 1850 takes us 4 hours.
Large games can be fun, however remembering everything during those games can be tedious.

2500. Small enough to fit on one table, not take more than 3 hours, and fit in one force org chart.
Big enough that both armies are varied and have answers for everything, from AV 14 to hordes, and people get to use some sub-par models for fun without crippling themselves.

I find the sweet spot to be 1500-2000pts, although I've been interested in seeing a sub-1000pt game to see how it changes things.

Lately, 1000 to 1200 points because a couple of beginners just joined the group. We also have a lot of Orks/Tyranids/Guard that start to crowd the board at higher points values than that. I find smaller games are a lot more tactical and involve a lot more finesse since you can't really afford to take too much damage; larger games often devolve into a slugging match with little room to maneuver or thought to tactics.

Agreed. I like anything 500-1500 points. It has a good, quick pace, enough time to consider things and then start your turn. In larger battles, you get bored during your opponents turn.
Tried a 3500 points and it was awful. The table was full of models with no room to maneuver, each turn took forever, after two turns you just start throwing dice to get it over with and there are so many rules questions/conflicts.

Yeah its unfortuante that for some reason people out here buy exactly enough for 2k and don't go any higher. We do have 1 person out here who bought enough models for an entire chapter of Marines (Blood Angels I think) and he said he is gunna send out a call to arms at some point for everyone to come and play against his entire chapter. Needless to say I look forward to being part of wiping out an entire chapter of Mon Keigh

Ugh, I could not devote enough time (or money) to a 25000 point game. 2500 yes, 25000 no.
That said, I have no real preference, and usually let my opponent decide on points. If it is someone who is new (or at least new to 6th edition) they usually prefer smaller games (500-1000). Against the vets we tend to go larger. Most of my games against vets are usually 1750, as that is the point level for my stores ongoing Veteran's Night Tournament.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I'm always willing for a ~8k-10k game just so I can play with almost everything, but yeah... usually have to settle for something smaller.
