Subject: Mission: Katharsis - A Hitech Miniatures Kickstarter - Cancelled

Twisting Tzeentch Horror

So, found this via Kicktraq and couldn't find a relevant thread on here for it.
Project and everything available here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/729371086/mission-katharsis-miniatures-tactical-board-game
MISSION: KATHARSIS is the first game set in the larger WARHELL universe, a far future world engulfed in a deadly struggle against spawns of Evil.
Mission: Katharsis is a tactical boardgame for 2 players. Meticulously crafted with dark future enthusiasts in mind, it takes place in year 3999, aboard an ARC-class spaceship. Gameplay is based on six-sided dice and is further enhanced by over 300 cards representing monsters, ship locations, as well as unexpected twists that may come about in the bowels of the vast spaceship. The inclusion of cards adds depth to the experience and makes it different with each play. At the same time, having part of the rules on cards instead of the manual makes it easier for new players to get the hang of the basics and spares them the hours of slogging through the rulebook before breaking the game out for the first time.
Contents:
Rulebook
5 unpainted, high quality resin miniatures
5 hero statistic sheets
10 boss statistic sheets
10 boss cards
96 monster cards
260 location cards
40 event cards
3 monster quick reference sheets
a game board
3 door tokens
2 resin console models
1 flamer template
assorted tokens
2 x 6-sided dice
Pictured below are actual resin casts of the included miniatures. These are not renders or 3D prints!
Mission: Katharsis - Game Overview
One of the players assumes command of an elite squad of the Sacred Liquidators. Liquidators are true heroes in the world of Warhell. Through their devotion to the Popess, extensive training, and unswerving faith, they’re capable of completing any mission. Only thanks to warriors like these may humanity hope to win the uneven war against evil.
Each of the Liquidators belongs to a different faction and boasts a unique set of skills. It’s up to the player to mold this group of mavericks into an unstoppable killing machine. Should he fail, he’ll lose, and the humanity will face its greatest threat yet.
The other player takes on the role of the demonic being controlling the Arc. His task is to thwart the Liquidators by whittling them down. The monsters he’ll throw at the elite warriors are no match for them. But blow by blow, the heroes will be worn down until they collapse of exhaustion. How many monsters die in the process is irrelevant... The Arc’s controller will have under his command all manner of demons as well as the ship’s mechanical guards, twisted by the powers of darkness. The demented AI overseeing the Arc will also be his ally – sudden room decompression, gun turrets, phony maps, terminals bursting into flames... All to help defeat the Liquidators.
Why KICKSTARTER?
What we offer isn’t some hazy idea of what we’d love to make if given enough money.
On the contrary - the game is already finished. What we need the funds for is to pay the manufacturing costs. The production will kick off immediately after the campaign ends.
The important part is that we plan to produce the game in a strictly limited number of copies, which means you’ll get a truly unique product. Unfortunately, this means that the cost will be a bit higher than average, but we feel the quality will more than make up for it.
A hardcore gamer, playtester of numerous games, and gifted game designer, Pawel Zuchowski, author of NORSGARD the miniatures game, has come up with a game that is easy to learn but hard to master.
Here’s what he has to say about the project: „The cramped corridors of the demon-possessed spaceship lend the game an atmosphere so many gamers are fond of – an atmosphere of constant danger hiding round every corner. A never-ending horde of monsters against a handful of elite warriors. A humongous spaceship to explore, through which the Liquidators travel blind. Virtually every room presents you with tough decisions – carefully search the given location, gathering needed supplies, such as medkits, or force your way to the next room, so as to waste as little strength as possible in unnecessary combat. Along the way you can also work consoles to hack into the mainframe and gain access to floor plans, allowing you to plan your route. But should you fail to crack the security protocols, inadvertently setting off the ship’s defenses, the mission’s difficulty will shoot up from lethal to suicidal. Risk management, tough calls, and Pyrrhic victories are what makes Mission: Katharsis such a blast to play.”

ADD-ONS
Original Addons
Addons after update 2's rejig:
What is interesting is that all of the figures currently unlocked are finished sculpts and available individually. Though buying the five included runs to about £70 plus shipping, where as the standard pledge is £40 plus shipping. Sure, shipping is a little higher, but then you're getting a boxed game with that as well.

A lot of paid add-ons there, but I suppose smaller companies can't be as flexible in that department.
Will be interesting to see how this one goes, and what the 'monsters' end up looking like.
Also, thanks for volunteering to keep this thread, and title, up to date!

Yeah, the large number of paid versus free addons does seem to be the downside to this. Though comparing the KS prices to their online prices they are discounted still. The comments suggest that there could be further surprises along the way.
After all, they've already got a number of models they could throw in if they wanted to juice the campaign a little.

This thing is a mess.
First, why are there so many pledge levels. Is anyone really going to pay an additional 30# for the privilege of having their name in the rulebook? Yeesh...

I winced at the rulebook pledge.
I've got my name in a few rulebooks at this point, and it didn't cost me any extra.
My biggest worry is board size, and the massive amount of cards this game will come with.
Almost seems more card game than board game.
I'll be keeping an eye on this at least.

I've been involved with the making of the game and will gladly answer any questions you might have.
To address a few doubts:
The game is more of a tactical wargame on a board than a straight-up boardgame like Space Hulk. Think of it more along the lines of a skirmish game with hexes. The board size is enough for the kind of clashes the game is built around.
There is one double-sided board that represents the rooms the party explores. Every room has a couple of exits (placed at different spots depending on the room) that lead to different levels, and which room the party ends up in is randomized by drawing cards from one of three decks. Each room (and there loads of them) differs in the type and placement of exits, the items it contains (including consoles you can hack for bonuses), and the threat level, which is essentially the number and type of monsters the opposing player may deploy.
There are lots of cards, but you use only a handful of those at a time. They are used as the main randomizing factor and a rules reference - all the monster and location rules are on the cards, there's no need to reference the rulebook. Even missions are on super-sized cards, so you don't have to keep opening it up. This is a conscious decision to speed up the game, and I think it works quite nicely.
Name in rulebook pledges are for those that enjoy this sort of thing (and they'll be prominent, not tucked in at the bottom in super-small font). We never expected these to be popular, but adding them doesn't cost anything, and considering how simple pledging is (pledge for the basic game and any add-ons you may want, that's it), we thought "what the heck!"

I jumped in on an early bird.
Just because £48 for 5 or 6 hitech miniatures is really good, regardless of whether or not the game itself will be. I own a couple of Hitech models already and the are very high quality. Really nice they are.
To be honest though I'm just sitting on this and seeing how it goes. I'll have a closer look at the minis that are included, and have a think about whether they'll be of use to me if I end up not really liking the game.
2 hours after I pledged my £35, they messaged me asking if "I was sure that I wasn't interested in shipping?" I chuckled a bit. Shipping will be added.

Update #1
May 23 2014
Thanks and thoughts.
Thank You very much for first wave of bakers . Thanks to all of You ! Pretty decent result for the first 12 hours we think . So, now after first impresions we need seriously consider our add-ons and make them much more attractive . More, good news within next few hours. Automatically Appended Next Post: Update #2
May 23 2014
ADD-ON's will be changed .
Following the suggestions we've received, we've decided to reshuffle the add-ons so that new Liquidators are only unlocked AFTER the full complement of bosses is unlocked first. Please take a look at the new, more attractive goal system we've prepared for you.

And another update, with more information this time:
Update #5
May 26 2014
...a word from rule's creator.
First of all sorry for me english. I am not a native speaker. The good news is that game rules are professionally translated and a native speaker made proof reading. What’s more it was Nicolaus Ingeneri, who is well known to the die hard players. So, you can be sure that rules will be easy to read and learn!
Ok, now let’s start talking about rules
Gaming board
Do you know chess, right? Just 64 squares gives a ton of possibilities… Mission: Katharsis (MK for short) has much more hexes and it gives even more possibilities. Yes, at the start we were considering an option to build the corridors. However, there are already games which give such possibilities. So, we made a tough choice and choose another way, which with some additional rules gives much more fun during the game. First of all such game board like gives you much more movement possibilities. A lot of things can happen during the game. Maybe board is time and time again the same, but other things change.
Rooms
Here our magic starts. Game includes 3 decks of different rooms. Each room deck consist of 10 different rooms and each room is in 4 copies. So, it gives 40 cards per room deck. Of course cards are shuffled. So, each time when you draw room card you take a random room card. Well, as always example is the best. Look at room card:
Now let’s assume that our heroes entered the room… what happens now? First of all you put the door tokens and console on the gameboard. Than one players draws the monsters from 3 decks: 1 green monster (easy enemy), 3 yellow monster (well, these guys can be scarry) and 1 red monster (this one is really lethal). So, depending on the room you always get different monsters, different exits (exits tell from which deck you will draw next room card) and objects (like console, map etc.). From time to time there are also some special rules for the room. So, I hope that now you will see that this is not just a single boardgame. This is the game for many tactical scenarios. We really made some cool rooms…
Console
Ahh… this is the part of the game which I like most… Did I say that you draw a card from room decks at random… well, you not have. Just use console! Crack all security systems and download the map. It will allow you to look into the few cards in the room decks and put them in any order. Yes, now at least you will know where you will go… Did I mention that you will have to bypass security protocols during the fight? And what happens when you fail to break routines… well, than things start to go nasty. You will activate security systems. In such case player who is controlling whole Ark and monsters draws a card from mishap deck.
Now you can see over card “sentry gun” a word INSTANT. So, basically this card is resolved just after drawing it. However, some cards can be resolved later when player will get most benefits from playing it. Let’s assume that Liquidators cracked all security protocols and now they know what is behind the doors… However, they already failed such attempt earlier and their opponent has following card:
You see… how you can ruin the day of brave Liquidators. Ok, enough. Let’s keep some things for another day.
Why monster cards not monster miniatures?
Answer is simple. There are 3 monster groups and each group there is 8 different monsters. Add to this 10 unique monster. Even without adding multiple copies of basic monsters you have 34 different monsters. This really allowed to make different monsters not only with different statistics, but also with different attack types and abilities. Game has to be quick and easy to learn and cards will be perfect. Also we decided that high quality arts will be much better than poor plastic miniatures with flashes and big mould lines. Just go outside the box and look at possibilities which we can offer.
Chess… again
Like in game of chess Liquidators are unique. They are not expandable, but in some mission some of them will be like King. You will lose the game if King will die. So, you will have to protect the chosen Liquidator even at the cost of sacrificing another one. Player controlling Ark and monster on the other hand has unlimited resources, but his monsters are much weaker than Liquidators. So, patience will be his biggest virtue during the game.
Ok, it is all for today. Next time I will try to answer on your questions.

So this got cancelled a couple of hours ago. Anyone got any idea what happened? I basically put down for the base game and was in "forget about it for 2-3 weeks" mode.

I'm guessing they might have gotten comments that a lot of elements were reminescent of Space Hulk or 40K in general?

Been busy at work, so haven't had chance to post the updates over in a timely fashion.
But basically, the project stalled and despite an attempt over the past few days to get it moving again, there wasn't really any forwards movement.

Err... from comments made by the creator, it seems the campaign was a hot mess in their minds as well. I think it's for the best at this time until they can get a clearer idea of what they want to do.
Personally, I'm not a super fan of the minis, but I can understand they'd be someone's cup of tea. Wish them well.

Maybe that's what happened? I didn't threaten to pull my pledge and the campaign got cancelled!

I'm not a super fan of them, but for what, 35 quid plus postage for those 5 figures it looked decent, or like it could have potential at least (even if only for the models, which were the only reason I backed).
