vampire counts strength is in its characters not in rank and file troops. the 2 units of skeletons are good bunkers but i dont see anything in that list which seems threatening

Would this be more threatening to people or should I look into more 15000-2000point games?
Vampire
Heavy Armour,enchanted shield, barred nightmare
dreadknight 140
necromancer
Level 2 talisman of protection 110
Skeletons
2 units 21 models full command. 270
Hexwraiths
2 units of 5 with champion. 320
Black knights
5x barding + lances with full command 160
That's 1000 on the nose I think.

One thing i would consider doing is dropping 5 hex wraiths and adding 5 black knights to have a unit of 10 knights with a vamp in it. That unit will hurt things at 1k

U might wanna check out more our VC forum,I don't advertise,I m tryn to help.
However VC works like this: 1 dead dude is 2 dead dude,so you need to try to win or at least not lose to much for CR in early game cause the best thing we have is that we come back!
A cheaper and with the same potential for blocking nasty cavalry and warmachines is the Spirit Host, just watch out for magic missile
For the rest keep your army as a block that slowly, rentlessy advance and seems unstoppable. Is also a psychological factor, when it seems you do no DMG to your foes you start to do mistakes and you loose.
Nice list BTW,but put your general in 10 BK group and you ll have fun!

So 10 BK and 5 Hexs for flanks? What if I drop the vampire off the horse and have him on foot with the second skeletons.unit?

No i wouldnt do that. You have a combat monster of a character who can add wounds to your units or spawn new ones. In this list have him mobile. The units of skeletons arent going to do a whole lot besides tie units up in combat which is their job. The vamp is a CC monster and you want him in CC so he can eat characters and units. Keep him mobile.

The problem with using BKs at this point level is that you have no real combat character to deal the damage. Sure a hero vamp might look good on paper, but he lacks the sustain that a lord brings. Both when it comes to keeping the BK buss alive, and adding combat res. Since you have given him Dread Knight he HAS to challenge, which robs you of 4 strength 5 attacks that can slaugther through the rank and file to reduce incoming attacks. He already has WS 6, so it is not like he'll need the extra 2 as he'll hit most things on 3s.
The other issue is magical sustain, as we are heavily dependent on magic, you almost always need a level 4 for casting, even at 1k. You can easily fit in a level 4 master necomancer into such a list. Because of our easy access to cheap chaff and easily ressurectable zombies he should never see combat and can chill back in a zombie bunker. a Hero vamp on the other hand, is just a toughness 4 dude with 2 wounds. It is not hard to kill him. If you do insist on fielding a mounted hero i suggest the following:
Vampire, Level 2 Upgrade
+ Barded Nightmare
+ Heavy Armour, Shield
+ Sword of Might, Talisman of Endurance
+ Quickblood
+ Lore of Vampires
- - - > 242 Points
It means you'll have to drop the necro, but this gives you a general that has a ward save, and has ASF with 4 strength 6 attacks.
I do advice against it though. a master necro backing up 8 Crypt Horrors is a much better option, as you have these big dudes with lots of poisonous attacks with 5 thoughness and 5+ regain, which will get 5 wounds back on an invoction. It is just too good to pass up in my opinion.

Try taking hexwraiths instead of black knights.

At lower level points where you don't have access to a good vampire lord, Your best bet is to get as many Grave Guards or Crypt horrors at you can. At 1k, you can field upto 500 points in either. Get 30+ Grave Guards with FC and Great weapons, or 8 Crypt horrors. These will do fine on their own. Black Knights simply have too few attacks and will crumble if they can't break their enemy on the charge.
