Tanks. Rhinos, razors, preds, vindis, hunter/stalkers.

I can field enough marines for a reinforced battle company. Pushing close to 200 boots on the ground, but I only own 4 rhino chassis. Just the way my collection came together I guess, but I need more treads.

They're more expensive per model, and more of a luxury in an army list than a must have.

Apparently Pink Horrors now...

Seriously, PA bodies. As a DA, SM, player (probably more than anything else right now) a ton of these guys without weapons in hand (either don't glue or magnetize) can serve as veterans or tacticals.

Vehicles are better in 7th. But I'll need to get more games of 7th under my belt (all battleforged, of course) before I really get a feel for how much I need troops in the new meta.

I got kind of excited about the idea of fielding a Demon Factory, until I started figuring out how many demons I would need.

Deathwing Devastators would have been a nice alt to Centurions for my Dark Angels allowed to carry 4 heavy weapons and 4 CML's per squad (Flakk missiles for free), normal prices for other weapons apply.

I also agree with the trend, and say basic troops. Guardsmen with lasguns, CSM with bolters or BP+CCW, etc.

With most support units, you never need more than 3 of them. I mean, I guess 7th has changed that somewhat, but still they do cost points and all. Meanwhile, lists can always use more troops choices, and there isn't a limit to how many of them you can take now.

For the IG or orcs, where the motto is “We’ve got more bodies then you have bullets” I can see needing endless waves of troops. But for tactical marines, I think there is a point of diminishing returns. In smaller games, there are only so many objectives you need to sit on, and in large games, they are not going to be much more then targets. Don’t get me wrong, I love my tacs and field two squads in almost all my lists. But I think the most I’ve ever put on the table in a non-apoc setting was 4, and that doesn’t happen often. This is despite the fact that I own 7 squads of the guys and could probably assemble another two if I wanted from bits on hand.

At some point you need to stop spending points on troops that are meh at everything and start picking up some specialists to deal with the stuff you see at higher points. They make a good skeleton to build an army around, but you need all the other bits to get things to work right.
