This game is really awesome if you can find a casual group that doesn't mind homebrewing.

Most of the core rules are great and perfectly reasonable but some of them are a total mess. Like new Invisibility spell that makes a chosen unit basically unkillable or odd random charges that someone likes and others don't. Current CC rules make >80% of mellee units unusable out of extremely casual games.

People are not entirely right when they say that there's no tactix. Probably, it aplies to tournament lists to some extent cause they exploit the strongest possible units and builds. And the gap between strong and weak is enormous here. There's literally no way to take an army of fun and fluffy but weak units and hope to win a netlist. Ballance is admittedly crappy if you don't make your own changes.

But the moment such nerd-win attitude goes away and the player takes a ballanced army vs an opponent's ballancerd army, the games get really enjoyable and tactical. So, yep, it all depends on people. GW gave equal possibilities to build a no-brainer powerlist to stomp everyone as a compensation for your complexes and to build a great list that is fun to play with and against.

It's not impossible to tweak things a bit to make literally any game ballanced and fun. But GW puts little to no effort into it. You'll have to do it yourself.

koooaei makes an interesting point.

It's not so much that 40k has zero tactics at all, just there's a huge gap between units that are good and units that are so terrible you have no reason other than gimping yourself to take, so tactics generally don't factor in much compared to other games where there's much less disparity between choices so even a force made up of "weak" units can win against a force made up of "strong" units if the player is good enough; that almost never happens in 40k because the gap is so large that there's generally no way a weak unit is going to come out against a strong unit.

Just wanted to take the time to thank this very (active?) community. I understand that many people are unhappy with the new rules, but as i haven't played since 4th, I will have to experience it on my own. I will definitely be looking at my FLGS before I make a decision on what I will be playing. (Though Dallas is an hour drive -_-)

Thanks again to everyone, I will be conducting more research to make a more informed decision.

As far as GW screwing people on prices, most game stores that I have called actually reduce the prices in order to keep the income flowing and to recruit new players.

Plus, im 24 and divorced twice, at this point GW doesnt really scare me with being screwed.

Forgot to ask this, but is the Dark Vengence worth buying? I like the space marines and Chaos Space marines if nothing else I could use the whole set to proxy an army.

The DV set is a good value. The sculpts are nice and are snap fit for the most part. Very detailed miniatures. Has a start up scenario booklet.

Captain Killhammer McFighterson stared down at the surface of Earth from his high vantage point on the bridge of Starship Facemelter. Something ominous was looming on the surface. He could see a great shadow looming just underneath the waters of the Gulf of Mexico, slowly spreading northward. "That can't be good..." he muttered to himself while rubbing the super manly stubble on his chin with one hand. "But... on the other hand..." he looked at his shiny new bionic murder-arm. "This could be the perfect chance for that promotion." A perfect roundhouse kick slammed the ship's throttle into full gear. Soon orange jets of superheated plasma were visible from the space-windshield as Facemelter reentered the atmosphere at breakneck speed.

I liked DV, great models.
Plus, using dark angels as chaos marines is barely even a proxy.

If you're going 40K, then DV is a good way to start. Currently.

But it might be worth holding off on it, because... well, new edition. You'll have to get a new, different rulebook.

Pretre: OOOOHHHHH snap. That's like driving away from hitting a pedestrian.
Pacific:First person to Photoshop a GW store into the streets of Kabul wins the thread.
Selym: "Be true to thyself, play Chaos" - Jesus, Daemon Prince of Cegorach.

They are going to be putting an updated one in DV. There have been rumors that it will be incomplete but hopefully they end up being false.

This.

Its a high value set just for the models, and the sculpts are really good IMO. You may be able to talk someone down on price for it because it doesn't currently come with the new ruleset. You gotta procure the rulebook separately as of now.

I would seriously hold off until later on it though. Especially if you're considering other games as well.

I've just got back into the hobby again after a roughly fifteen year break. The 15-20% discount at the local FLGS helps control the budget a little more. Having my first 500 point game today to run through the basic rule. I expect 9/10 games will be with friends or local tournaments that have a 'fun first/social event' atmosphere to them. So net lists aren't an issue for me; they're the equivalent to aimbots in FPS.

I - and this goes back to 2nd edition too - would only recommend 40k to people who will play with friends/local known groups. It's a social game so I've never had an interest in playing people I wouldn't want to also have a pint with.

As for army choice, I went with what I wanted to paint. As this took up my first xx hours of the hobby. I never played Daemons back then so they were my first choice this time round. If not these warp buggers, it would have been a converted Sisters army. Underdog armies have always appealed to me more. Point being: you'll have more fun overall if you pick the army that stands out to you (that gut feeling).

I was thinking of the dark vengeance set and taking all of the models and turning them into a small nurgle set with some green stuff. I posted about this idea on the army lists forum and was told that DV wasn't worth it, yet here people are saying it is.

Anyone else think this would be a good way to start up a nurgle army? I've always liked Nurgle the most out of the chaos gods. Plus from what I understand Nurgle troops are really hard to kill.

Anyone else agree with this plan of attack?

Also, Idc about the rule book. As it stands there are "other ways" to get the rules without bending over for GW lol

Apparently, DV is getting re-released with a smaller current rulebook.

Space Wolves: 3770
Orks: 3000
Chaos Daemons: 1750
Warriors of Chaos: 2000
