I've never played kill team before, I'm just reading up on it now. My buddy likes warhammer but has only ever played it once (with me). Would kill team make it easier for him to learn and ease him into the game?
I myself was thinking of getting into kill team anyways, just because I have a few models of everything.

I enjoy kill team a lot. For new players it has the advantage of working well at such a low point value. You can also introduce him to a lot of special rules via the specialists. I did a lot of kill team with a friend when I brought him in and he seemed to enjoy it. Automatically Appended Next Post: Keep in mind, I don't think it has been streamlined for 7th ed yet. Not sure though.

I looked in to kill teams , but I don't think they are a good way to play the game for new players . Anyone with fast moving troops like eldar or that can summon troops would be at a huge adventage over people that can't or don't have access to such units or powers.

I also have a friend who was dabbling with the idea of 40k but he didn't want to spend a shed load of cash. I told him about kill team and said I'll play that with him, he started a necron team and bought himself enough models to play a varied team. It's great fun and you can change one one or two things that don't have a huge impact on the game, but make it a bit more fun.
As a regular 40k player, kill team is a nice break from the big games too and the different missions are welcomed. The board being smaller allows for some cool scenery set ups as well, as you don't need to think about squad sizes, so you can have little gaps here and there to make things more interesting.
Hope this helps

I've played a couple Kill Team games, and honestly I don't find it much fun. Both times, I threw together a list in a couple minutes and completely obliterated my buddies off the table. The guy with more models on the table has a huge advantage, since each of them needs to be targeted individually.
I've found low points standard 40k games to be much more fun. 500 points is a lot of fun, both for the 5 Paladin Grey Knights player (my opponent) and the 35 man + tank Guard army (me). With your Necrons and Ultramarines you should be able to field two decent 500 point armies.
It might be worthwhile to try out Necromunda. I've played a lot of Mordheim (the fantasy warhammer equivalent) and had a blast. That way you're playing an actual game, not a dumbed down 40k.

Thanks for the quick replies. I also have a few other armies for us to try out (Nids, Tau, and I swear to god I have orks somewhere too) So he can have a taste of all the armies without having to commit to one.
Also to Makumba, I don't really field those types of troops, and since i'm using it to teach him how to play I wouldn't start cheesing him, I want him to like the game before I destroy him!

Here. Heralds of Ruin Killteam rules. This is all you need for awesome killteam funtimes. It's very very similar to mordheim/necromunda, but updated with current 40k rules and codexes. Easily the best unofficial rules out there. Loads of fun and easy to pick up.
Comparatively, the official GW rules are half-assed junk that break down really easily. They really are clunky, dumbed down 40k rules and a lot of things fail to translate over well to a skirmish level.

Super fun to play! Great for new players, small games so your army doesn't have to be huge. And they are just simple.

This.
Basically 40k was built to be a skirmish game by the amount of detail going into special rules, so this helps with the background massively when playing, its cheaper, faster and more fun imo, plus there are loads of conversion opportunities to make each Kill-Team unique and you can play multiple factions at low cost

What happens if the codex you have doesn't have a team list?

Which codex? All the official armies are covered, as well as some awesome new lists, like deathwatch, genestealer cults, and harlequin troopes. He's pretty quick about updating codexes when new ones are released. Usually within a week.

I just found out about this and I'm looking forward to it as a way to have fun in the 40k world without the major investment of time and energy standard 40k requires. I really feel positive about it and that is refreshing.

As the game stands right now, Kill teams is probably the most balanced and tournament friendly format.
Which is a shame for GW since a box of tactical marines could build you an entire Kill team. But this is the hole GW dug it self.

I second the Heralds of Ruin version of the ruleset, in particular its campaign system. Models can level up and gain stat boosts/abilities as they go. You can really get a good story going with it. You still need the 40k core rules and your respective codex to play, though.

I third the Heralds of Ruin ruleset. It's not much more complicated than the regular ruleset, and has better support for most armies (the way listbuilding works, more models are viable).

I find Kill Team to be an OK game for inside buildings and the like.
However, its easy as pie to mistakenly come up with a totally unbalanced game (for exapmple, a bunch of Cultists vs. a squad of Terminators), so I'm not sure if its the best thing for beginners.

As a bit of Chin Scruff in the game, I'd say Kill Team is a positive experience for new players. Particularly when it comes to learning things since you've only gotta focus on a small group of enemy units and their rules, rather than every time the enemy does something you're asking "So what's that do? Uh-huh...and what's that do again? So you're hitting me on what now?"
That said, one of my first Kill Teams ever was against a Space Wolves, Tau, Space Marines and my CSM Chosen. Long story short, the Space Wolves player brought his cavalry to the fight, the Tau player was between us and already up in a building, and apparently puppies riding wolfback can't climb ruins. XD
Needless to say, I was next and he was even more frustrated when he had only 1 floor to climb and couldn't do it.
Most winning I've ever had as a noob.

Kill team was a perfect introduction for my Wife into learning the game. (She got hooked on painting Orks initially)
It was really nice to have a couple games ignoring the specialists rules and then slowly introduce them to illustrate how they affect gameplay.
