The Last Chancer Who Survived
|
So, Wildstar was just released. Anyone else playing?
http://www.wildstar-online.com/en/
I'm not a fan of the monthly fee thing, especially with a $60 price tag to buy it on top of that.... but I liked the beta enough to invest in a 3-month membership to see how it goes. I pre-ordered the game and got to get in a little early, so right now i have a level 19 Exile Spellslinger Explorer named Necros. I have no idea what server I'm on though...

I was surprised how fast leveling is going.. I've only been playing a couple hours a day and I'm almost level 20.
So does that mean the focus of the game is all on raids? They want you to rush up to level 50 and go do big dungeons? For me, I prefer the leveling game.. if they wanted a raid game, why have levels at all?

It's pretty fun. I bought it because some of my friends were getting into it, and because the skill system reminded me a lot of GW1 (the good Guild Wars game).
Medic is a really fun class. Right now, I'm only DPS for levelling, but I can see how both DPS and healing can be fun with this class. I appreciate how every class is built to be able to go both DPS, as well as a non-freeloader role. In the future, it'd be nice to see a DPS/Support, in addition to all the DPS/healers and DPS/tanks.
I play on Warbringer, if anyone is interested in joining me. I'm only level 14, but my main is Weathercock, if anyone is interested in joining me in dungeons once I hit 20.

I've been goofing around with it. However, it's been crashing a LOT, seemingly due to memory-related issues. I checked the forums, and this seems to be somewhat common on people who are running the game with only 4GB of ram or less (I'm still using a 32-bit OS).
It wasn't so bad on Saturday and Sunday. But ever since Monday, the crashes have been much more frequent.

Just checked, my server is Evindra
I haven't had any issues at all with crashes but I'm on a brand new PC. They seem to be squashing bugs pretty quickly so hopefully they'll fix it soon. I was expecting the servers to be dead in the water on launch day like every other MMO.

So far I love the class building in this game. Lots of options. Not sure about balance yet, but the focus of skills themselves tends to lend towards better balancing.
Liking the Spellslinger and Engineer classes the best from my first look but I'm gonna try the Slinger first cause, magitech guns? Sweet.
Also. Aurin? Adorable.

I remembered that was my current impression of them when I got to the sign-on page for Wildstar.
A pity, as the game looks good.
But, NCSoft has failed me more than once before. Fool me twice...

I have a feeling one of the driving reasons behind this game was to produce a game for all those GW2 players who wish GW2 was GW1, cause damn. Wildstar feels so much like it's trying to implement key features from GW1 that never got into GW2, namely GvG. At least those douches won't be sucking up space in WvWvW anymore
I think I like Wildstar a lot more than GW2 though. The PvP most of all is just plain better. The class balance thus far has been better, and the combat itself is just so much fun. Give them some time to work it all out and I think this'll be the best PvP since old school WoW, before WoW became bland and tasteless (I'd really wish that my team would always be visible on the map, it's annoying as hell having no idea where any of them are unless they're in range).
Housing is amazing. It'll be time consuming, but by far the best housing I've seen in an MMORPG.

As someone who considers GW1 (before it went to gak. I'm looking at you, Eye of the North) to be one of his favourite games, and considers GW2 to be a massive disappointment (worth the price of admission, but not nearly as good as its predecessor, and not nearly good enough to be worth playing past the main campaign), I find this point to be true.
The moment my friend started explaining the skill system to me, I got interested. Now, it's not quite as well implemented as GW1's skill bar customization, but it's definitely a huge improvement over what GW2 offers, and I'm finding it more enjoyable so far.

Wildstar definitely is the best MMO out there - imo. It has a very interesting combat system that takes one more step while also still ressembling what everyone is used to, it has lots of additional stuff to explore (that really pays off!) and its lore seems to be interesting. The only real downside, to me, would be the rather sterile environment with very boring quest line presentation.

Honestly, I find the lore and the questing to be rather uninspired. When I started the game my first thoughts were "oh look another guy who thinks he's a badass is trying to save his wife. WTF do you mean his name is deadeye? Seriously? This is going to be terrible." And it is pretty bad. There's some cool ideas in the lore, but the execution just sucks what little originality there was right out and replaces it with cliches.
Then slowly, I realized this was the whole point. Wildstar contains so much tongue-in-cheek mocking of the conventions of MMORPG's I can't hold it against anyone for hating it at first. It takes a few hours before you realize that the game is making fun of itself and its entire genre.
Wildstar isn't really about its lore, something that is too its credit since half the time it's making fun of its entire genre and the other half its just not taking itself seriously at all. Wildstar is about the mechanics and content, something no other game I can think of can quite match it in.
GW2 has the mechanics but its PvP is fun more for occasional silliness rather than serious play, and its PvE balancing terrible and focused on small group content and unorganized zerging.
SWTOR has great solo-PvE content, and decent enough mechanics but significant balance issues and structural problems and is overall, fairly uninspired.
WoW is WoW.
Of all the games I've played the past year on MMORPG scene, none have been the match for Wildstar. Some do better in some areas, but none come close to its overall package. It's really surprising to me as when I went to character creation for the first time I thought the models were terrible and then the run animations were just hideous and I was thinking I'd regret the expense. But now the game is really growing on me as it opens up. I highly recommend people try it. Anyone who loved GW1, and misses that game, this is the best you're getting.

I've been playing off and on, I haven't really dig in though.. but one thing that is bugging me is the AMPs. Don't know about other classes but for a Spellslinger, to get through to the 3rd tier, you have to get 2nd tier amps that are world drops.. and those world-dropped amps are tough to find and WAY too expensive in the auction house. You can find some from vendors, but not all. I'd rather they did all of the 2nd tier amps as vendor stuff, or quests, but if they want amps to be loot then make them just be on the 3rd tier... so your progress doesn't have to be halted by greedy players.

Honestly, the way you acquire AMPs is absolute garbage, especially since the game doesn't really do a lot to teach you about how important they are, or give you much direction without looking outside the game itself.

Definitely agree about AMPs. No idea why they put it in that way. Hopefully it gets fixed. No one should have to compete for rare items to get their skill trees @_@ Especially since many classes seem to really really need specific AMPs to function.

Ive been 50 for a few days now and its still a blast.
The amp system will fall off, as you only have to get them once.
Ive just watched the Auction house and in challenges i would always take the loot option that could give amps.
(The lower bags, not the crafting one)
I am very much enjoying the game, some people are hitting a wall with difficulty in instances.. but they dont speak to their group, they expect a faceroll and then have loot. Ive yet to run into an issue with any being to hard.
Then again it helps that im a healer, and friend is a tank.
Being in a guild goes a very long way in this game, our guild bank is is full of amps for anyone who needs them, it eases up the system alot.

While I was still playing, I got a couple of 2nd Tier AMPs as quest rewards. So you should be able to reach the 3rd Tier of AMPs in at least one area.
I should probably log on again to see if the memory problems have gone away... or at least gotten better. The game definitely has some potential, but the crashing was getting out of hand (at least once every half hour, and one time I crashed just as I reentered the game after an earlier crash).

Having played the game more since release, I thought I'd offer some final thoughts on it. Keep in mind, I'm still not max level, but I've toyed around with most areas of the game. As such I can't comment on max level play or raiding.
The Classes; Generally pretty good. The Stalker seems to be suffering the most from what I can tell, but it's more a team utility problem for them than necessarily being bad. The class balance right now isn't bad for a release game and you'll be able to find a niche for any of the classes you play even if they're not completely up to snuff. Some bugs and glitches but nothing too crippling. I find AMPs very annoying as it stands, but otherwise the leveling and skill system is fun and offers decent variety. There are some structural problems in the class balance, but they can be managed and hopefully the devs will wise up and do the work to fix them eventually.
Questing; It's okay. A traditional WoW style quest system, but one that lets you turn in many quests without returning to the giver face to face. The mobs can become quite challenging as the game goes on and it has a nice difficulty curve. Nothing too special lore or story wise, but it's effective enough to get you levels. The zones aren't that varied but you get to go around, do a few different things now and then, see the world. Paths add some nice flavor to the experience and you can pick the one that suits your interests the best.
Dungeons; There are really 2 kinds of dungeons here. Adventures, which are more casual and very similar to the Dungeons in GW2 with branching options for the group, and the 'Dungeons' which are more MMORPG traditional and can be quite challenging given the high need for group coordination on certain mechanics. You. Will. Die. A lot. Reminds me very much of the early GW2 dungeons which were great fun before they became tedious and exploit driven. Right now its not a good idea to level via dungeons however as the repair costs greatly outpace the rewards for completion (sadly). See how it develops.
PvP; this is the best part of the game imo. While the PvE group content is nice and varied, the PvP is the real highlight. It's meaty, fast, with variety of game types and for the love of games they have cross server tech. If you like WPvP, this isn't the best ever but it's better than the other MMO's out there that aren't WoW (and really does anyone enjoy WoW WPvP anymore?)
The game is sort of a WoW GW2 hybrid with a lot of similarities to GW1. There's decent end game content to justify a monthly sub, and I think Housing and Crafting deserve special shout outs. Housing is great fun. Their system offers great versatility and customization for a player with much room for expansion. Crafting is nice for no other reason than it's eliminated the boring "make 50 chest pieces to get next level of crafting* by including tech trees to unlock new schematics. I'd say the game is worth the sub, especially if you've been dying for something WoWish that isn't WoW or for a successor to GW1 that plays more like GW1.
