Subject: What is the Best CC Deathstar?
|
 |
Sneaky Striking Scorpion
An Igloo Deep North in Canada, eh?
|
Hey all,
I quite enjoy running deathstars, regardless of their ability to actually win a game. A unit just wreaking whatever it touches, especially in CC, is a lot of fun; more fun than winning I think. Thus, I'm wondering who/what is the best CC deathstar? In order to make the comparisons accurate, let's say the requirements are
-no more than 600 points per unit,
-you can assume that psychic buffs are successful/psykers get the powers they need, and
-the unit gets the charge
The underlying questions, then, are straightforward: why is the unit the best? How do they survive the slog over to get into CC? What makes them so potent in CC?
-----
As an example, a star I quite like is the harlequin+farseer star.
10x Harlequins, Shadowseer, 10x Kisses
Eldrad
The shadowseer gets veil to get the harlequins over to the fight, and Eldrad supports with Fortune, Doom, and Prescience. If I have the points, I'll even add a spiritseer for Runes of Battle to make it that much more powerful.

Both players should be using the least durable units possible, with the house rule that all players remove an article of clothing every time you lose a unit, and take a drink every time you kill one of your opponent's units.
I have no idea which army will be triumphant, but I can assure you that everyone wins.

So the whole star has to be under 600pts?
Beast star is good, 4 masters 20 kyhmeras and jetseer.
Though harlequins are good too.

600 points is ~the value that the harlestar is run at (though any deathstar can be run with more or less points) so I figure keeping the points similar will help me keep things on the same playing field.

Most of the deathstars are going to be throwing out invisibility in this edition. It simply prevents other units from even having a chance at killing you. Your harliestar is only coming in at ~450, leaving you points for another farseer, or possibly a spiritseer. Another option would be taking the baron with DE allies.

The most important rule of 40K-Page XVII of the 6th edition rulebook, the figure at the top right of the page. "Shake hands with your opponent and thank them for a good battle and fun experience." Then go out for a beer.

I would actually throw in fugan, the baron doesn't do much for you other then a 2++ while fugan will take out tanks letting you assault the juicy targets inside.

Any Deathstar that actually reaches combat...
IMO, it doesn't have to be the killiest, it either needs to soak and survive enemy firepower, or be mobile enough to catch the enemy.
I'd have to pick a reasonable sized SeerStar or ScreamerStar.

150 for conscripts
Xenos is about 85
2 priests is 50
Level 3 grey knight with hammerhand, sanctuary and 4+ invul for unit. 200 or so
About 500 points of "cant touch this"

True but then I would have to give up hammerhand, sanctuary, and the 4+ invul. I think conscripts with a 3+ re-rollable invul save is better than worrying about being casted on at effective strength 6(+2 str from hammer, -1 from rad grenades). Actually make that a 4+ re-rollable and give them invis instead of sanctuary
Still, 100 attacks re-rolling hits and wounding on twos against most targets with rending. Not gonna lie, looks pretty legit and TOTALLY legal in a one combined arms, one allied detachment

Do tell, when Inquisitorial Detachments allow you to literally just take an inquisitor. And max at two.

Big stack of death company with Lemartes is still pretty mean. 10 black knights with an allied iron hands chapter master with shield and night shroud hanging around us tough.
Not really a death star but I like Karandras in scorpions for the double claw or in a pile of wraithblades. That claw of his just murders things.

Take Inquisitorial detachment as well. Not allied, not Combined Arms, does not require Unbound. The digital Codex: Inquisition allows for an Inquisitorial Detachment of 1-2 Inquisitors, 0-3 Henchment Squads.

What's 3000 points in a single unit these days when gw tries to raise the point levels with every edition?

When has GW ever raised the points levels? All they do is decrease the costs of things, in effect they do the opposite unless you want to use more toys.
In reality it is tournaments who set the points levels.

Not points limits per say, but by introducing larger units, bigger monstrous creatures and stuff like escalation and double force org you pretty much want to play bigger games to take advantage of the stuff in you codices.
