I'm curious if drop pods can score objectives. I'm just starting to use them and was curious since the 7th Ed rules give a list of things that cannot score and transports are not included in that list.
Also, side question. Is there any way to take a drop pod in your list but use it as an empty pod?
Thanks.

All units are scoring units unless the rules specifically say otherwise. Drop pods have no exceptions, so are definitely scoring. Another tip: deep striking vehicles now only count as having moved at Combat Speed when they arrive rather than Cruising Speed (like they did in 6th). The vehicle no longer needs to fire snap shots when it arrives, making Deathwind launchers pretty decent upgrades! There is no requirement to deploy in a dedicated transport at the start of the game, only that units are not allowed to deploy in another unit's dedicated transport.

Yes they are. Furthermore, drop pods for tactical squads also have the Objective Secured rule.

I'd like to add that it's any troops choice that can take a Drop Pod, and any dedicated transport of any kind for any troops choice that can legally take it. Of course you'd need to use Battle Forged for Objective Secured.

About the empty pod part of your question, the way would be to buy the pod as a dedicated transport but choose to deploy the unit outside of the pod. The pod would then come in empty from reserves.

Yes they do and I love the change. It makes taking deathwind launchers and sending them in empty a good strategy to take/contest backfield objectives. They have to deal with an objective secured (assuming you bought it with a tac squad or BA assault squad) armor 12 vehicle that just sits there shooting them with large blasts. It is glorious.

I wonder though, as a BA player, if you take a Drop Pod for a DC Dread ( a troop choice that does not score) would said drop pod score and or objective secured?

Now, we like big books. (And we cannot lie. You other readers can’t deny, a book flops open with an itty-bitty font, and a map that’s in your face, you get—sorry! Sorry!) |

DC Dreads can score and have Objective secured. The Drop Pod would also score, as it would be a Troop Vehicle. It also has Objective secured.

I would say yes, drop pods taken for Death Company or Death Company dreads have objective secured. The rule for the Death Company never scoring is only for them not their transport. I will need to go check my codex as I don't think Death Company dreads have the no scoring rule.
Edit: Checked the codex, only the infantry Death Company never score. I am now going to get 4 more DC dreads for a fun super scoring dread army!

Well of course there is no mention of DC transport , its a codex from 5th Ed
There was no reason to put something about it at the time, i expect transports to be faqqed in the future, because a empty drop pod score is stupid as hell.

Why is it stupid, it is the same as having an empty rhino scoring...

There are drivers in Rhinos though. There is no pilot in a drop pod, but this is a lore issue as the driver in a Rhino has no real impact on the game.

There is a pilot of sorts. Just because its an artificial intelligence doesn't mean that it can't hold a position against enemy troops and its still smarter than your average grot

From a Narrative Point of view, the question on how 'aware' the Virtual Intelligence used by the Army of Men actually are is very justified given the whole hatred of true Artificial Intelligence. I do not find it hard at all to accept it is very likely that said Virtual Intelligence would not know what an objective is. Given their level of advancement, it probably doesn't even know what the thing it just smashed into after a long fall is called or that it even experienced a long fall or where it was prior to said fall if it does have that recognition. It likely knows nothing more then one simple thing: the people with the Identify Friend or Foe markers that read 'Friend' do not get Bolts fired at them while those without or marked clearly as Enemy do. So that just leaves the question: Are you going to go up to the Enemy Drop Pod and tell it to get off your objective?

It doesn't need to know what an 'objective' is. All it needs to know is to blast any enemy units that come within its range.

would Pedro scoring sternguard's pods have objective secured? Are there any other examples besides those and the DC dread? thanks

In the SM codex the only way to get an OS drop pod is for Tactical Marines or Crusaders. There are no other troops choices that can select a DP as dedicated transport. OS does nit automatically transfer from unit to DT hence the Pedro Sternguard don't get it.
