I would undoubtedly turn traitor just on general principles. However, I can't see myself being over-inclined to join Chaos. I'd be one of those that went traitor but didn't go all chaos-y deamon-y.
Unless I was the Sons of Malice. Malal is the only Chaos God I would willingly serve.

I'd devote myself to either Khorne or Slaanesh, eventually elevating myself to Daemon Prince. I think I could enjoy warrantless slaughtering, or else just hanging out in the Warp fething everything that moves and shooting up warp drugs every day.

Very hard to say. Take the influence of chaos out of the equation and Horus does seem like an improvement on the Emperor, and it's clear that Curze and probably Perturabo (judging by his reaction to what the Emperor's Children have become in Angel Exterminatus) had no idea of what they were allying with.
Those are motivations I could get behind - self preservation, since it seems likely the Night Lords would be next on Russ's to do list once he'd done with Prospero, or replacing an aloof tyrant with someone better, as Horus would have seemed.
So were I of either of those legions - or the Thousand Sons who were essentially forced to become traitors - I'd side with Horus and regret it later.
Some of the others though... I don't think I'd look at the Luna Wolves succumbing to Erebus's whispering, or the degeneration of the Emperor's Children, and think that was a cause worth siding with.

Depends what legion i was in. The iron warriors had a pretty good reason, thousand sons were forced to by the emperor and his pet russ, and i still dont know what the alpha legion believe. I can also see the "nothing exceeds like excess" viewpoint of the emperors children.
on the other hand, the eventual spawn-age would really suck, and i imagine thats pretty common in the word bearers. Plague marines, while awesome on the table, would be pretty horrific in reality. Being a world eater would be cool, like a less douchey wolf, but i'd want to see what their day to day is like when theyre not pillaging.
overall i like the traitor primarchs a whole lot more than the loyalists, with the exception of lion and sanguinius. I think they would inspire more loyalty (not necessarily the right kind).

If I was Thousand Sons I'd go traitor, what the emperor did to them was fethed up IMO. Otherwise I'd want to get those traitors for the gak they pulled on Isstvan.

Same with iron warriors, they were basically used like the death korps and belittled by everyone despite being one of the most powerful legions around. Mind you, angel exterminatus is my fav hh book so i may be a bit biased.

I would try to stay out of things but support the Imperium. If Chaos wins the galaxy would be about as nice a place as if the Nids win.
It is hard to support such an idiot emperor tho. Did he failed at almost everything.
1) An age of reason where no gods are worshiped (Including himself.). Fail.
2) Banning Psychers. He ruled no psykers in the Imperium and the only thing that got him was the destruction of Prospero and the loss of the 1000 sons. I mean really banning a psychic legion from using their powers how do think that is going to turn out. Tzeentch even said if the Empire had the Wolves and the Sons chaos wouldn't have stood a chance.
3) Uniting the primarchs to legions to make them complete - Failed.
4) Keeping Chaos a secret b/c it was too harmful to let the knowledge get out. Wow what a bad plan to at least not let the Primarchs know about choas. That probably lost him Horus and for sure Magnus.
5) Not allowing aliens to join or work with the Imperium. Turn your potential allies into enemies. Good Idea. NOT.
I am sure there are plenty more things he screwed up.
Even with all that tho I think there isn't a better option.
