I completely agree that they should be seperate and it's HIWPI. I also think it's RaI... but we're talking RaW here.

BlackTalos:
Electronic version, and a old one at that, so I can't give you a page number but I can inform you where in the book it is located:
Open to the section titled Preparing for Battle
Scroll a little way in to the Detachment entry
Within will be a sub-entry called Factions
Last Paragraph

A 'landmark' would be list of icons each faction uses, found right before the battle-field Roll entry, as this is within the paragraph that comes after the one you are looking for.

As I mentioned in another thread:
If the Authors had only penned a sentence stating that each Detachment can only consist of Models from a single Codex/Supplement....

While it is technically legal to mix and match from the books, at some point that Detachment is going to have to be defined as either a Tau Empire Detachment or a Farsight Enclave Detachment. The Rules need this definition to function, there are Restrictions which use X or Y Detachment as the Trigger, so leaving it as undefined is clearly incorrect. As they have given us no instructions on how to determine these things, leaving it up to our own devices to decide these matters for ourselves, there is no 'right or wrong' way to do it but one should always be constant in whatever defining method they choose to use. They must also announce this ahead of time to their opponent, and let their opponents decide if they wish to run against such a list.

Personally, I will avoid it myself by not mixing Codex's and Supplements but if I had to make a Ruling on it:
At list creation the player can simply decide if it is a Y or X Detachment before purchasing Units to fill it's slots.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Same here. Supplements and Codexes use different CA/Allied detachs for ease of playing.

AI & BFG: / BMG: Mr. Freeze, Deathstroke / Battletech: SR, OWA / Fallout Factions: BoS / HGB: Caprice / Malifaux: Arcanists, Guild, Outcasts / MCP: Mutants / SAGA: Ordensstaat / SW Legion: CIS / WWX: Union
