Sigh......If you want to see it, see it in theatres. This movie.....while I dont regret seeing it, it is very style over substance. all those cool shots in the trailer making it look epic? It isnt. Those shots are just shots with not meat behind it. It has a jarbled message which I dont get. Quite Honestly, It would have worked as a story arc for the TV show, given a cool idea more flesh....but they seem preoccupied with animating Stoics beard. They wanted to make a coming of age movie, but couldnt. It looked pretty and the action was OK, but it needed more time. The Villain....he just confused me TBH.
Im not sure how I feel about it

I enjoyed it, though it was nothing spectacular. Some of the ideas and more emotional moments seemed a bit much for a kids movie and should have just done more dragon scenes instead.

I'd give it three stars.

Ask yourself: have you rated a gallery image today?

The more puppy-kitten dragon the better really. Not bad, not great, but then I went there expecting cute dragons and got it, so I was happy.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

To me, tht was the problem.....TO MUCH of the dragons, but just looking at them, not real story. Why could he control the alpha? why can the alpha control the other dragons?

I heard the movie got really emotional at points? As in, maybe a bit darker. Is it true? (I haven't seen it)

I saw it in theaters yesterday and loved it. I am surprised that it is one whole movie and the ending is not the 3rd movie, but I loved it. The director said he was going for an "Empire Strikes Back" type of sequel and I thought he delivered.
My 2 cents at least. Visually it is amazing and if you are going to see it, treat yourself to it in theaters, plus the music goes along with the movie very well. John Powell is becoming one of my favorite movie composers now.

Blood is best stirred before battle, and nothing does that better than the bagpipes.

Took my oldest to see it last night. It was definitely geared more towards an older audience then the last, but was still a good movie. Some things were definitely on the "way to predictable" scale, but what are you going to do?

The flick was by-the-numbers.

I'll be going on Wed to see this, but I have to ask because of the amount of hype surrounding the 'super sad moment'...

Spoiler:
Does Stoic get off'ed in the end, seeing as this is supposed to be about Hiccup coming of age & assuming responsibilities and all that jazz? I mean, while not physically seen on screen, it is a Gerard Butler character, and he has a bad habit of suffering from 'Sean Bean syndrome' after all!

That's a good way to put it. Followed a pretty set standard formula.

I kind of feel like the first movie was lightning in a bottle. It had an energy and passion about it that made the film great, but it felt kind of accidental. The sequel is okay, and it tries to have its own message, but I feel like the film stumbles over itself a lot and feels clunky at times. Its worth seeing and still good imo, but not as good as the first film.

I will say though hotsauce, I see what you mean about Stoic's beard. Damn was that thing animated XD

That is the thing, the TV show is amazing, the animation is not great, but it is on par story wise with the original.

See I like the TV show but I don't feel it captures the magic either. Yeah the story is on par but there's more to fiction than just the narrative. There's tone, motif, an ambiguous sense that is always difficult to comprehend let alone explain to others.

The TV series has the movie's light heartedness and humor (something the sequel film definitely lacked) but the series lacks the first movie's passion or drive. The sequel certainly has the passion and the drive, but it just doesn't have lightness or the humor. The original didn't take itself very seriously, only seriously enough that we could feel tension as it reached the climax.

Sometimes when you're making a piece everything just slams together in a way that so perfect you yourself are shocked how well it all works. I kind of feel like that about How to Train Your Dragon, and now Dreamworks is kind of stumbling to really recapture that mixture. I'm also kind of baffled by the sequel, as there is sooooo much political commentary under the lines it quickly became obnoxious for me, because it was dealing with really heavy stuff, while I like the first movie for being lighthearted and taking itself with a pinch of salt.
