I do not recommend State of Decay. This is not a game which you will finish in one sitting, and for some idiotic reason the developers decided that bad things should happen when you stop playing it. For example, I'd set up some traps to defend my neighbours from zombie hordes and shut down the game... the next day when I started it up again, the game told me they had all been overrun by zombies.

Of for feth's sake! I hate games like that. That's like one of those stupid facebook games which forces you to keep coming back to spend cash or your base will be overrun. Presumably there's a way to get around that, either by editing the files or downloading a mod (ie like setting the timer back or something). Presumably developers assume that players don't have anything to do than play their game. That reminds me of strategy games that don't have a pause button (because "real life doesn't have one"), yeah, but I need to go take a piss mate. That or The End's battle from Metal Gear Solid, though at least that was funny when the game tells you off for quitting during the middle of a fight.

In MGS3 all your food could spoil if you left the game long enough. I wouldn't want that as a standard part of the game. That would just get tedious real fast.
It's a shame too, as I liked the look of that game.

Yeah, but IRC you didn't need to each much in the first place and rations were readily available in enemy camps. Sure though that could become a problem if you were playing on the harder difficulties, though I suppose you could just reset the in game clock if it became too much of an issue. I agree though, its a dumb mechanic that shouldn't be in any games unless it add to the gameplay (somehow). People have lives, so a game forcing you to play them for such arbitrary reasons just makes the developers come across as obtuse. At least in MGS 3 the mechanic does come into play in a funny way in that particular fight with the End too. As everything's apparently in real time, and the guy you're fighting is pretty old, if you don't play the game for a couple of days the enemy winds up dying of old age. ...Another silly Kojima game of course. =P

I have completed the base game and I am currently playing through the Lifeline campaign and it has never happened to me. Food and the like get used up when offline (although you can build outposts which collect basic resources) but I have never had anyone killed, or at least I can't remember it happening.
What I find irritating is that there are too many missions, you don't get much opportunity to simply explore as you are always having to save someone or defend your base.

Very Good:
Kerbal Space Program
Skyrim
Good:
Borderlands 2 - a shallower FPSRPG sandbox than Elder Scrolls or Fallout, but still fun.
Fallout: New Vegas - would be the best FPSRPG sandbox if it wasn't the buggiest.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown - would be better with Bethesda-level modding support.
Bad:
State of Decay - would have been good in the hands of a better dev team. DIAS gameplay and Ironman mode don't mix.
The Witcher 2 - I found the world too unpleasant to want to continue.

Haven't started SR4 yet, but I'm nearly done with Witcher 2.
It's pretty good. Can be unforgiving at times, but fairly decent overall.
EDIT: Finished the Witcher 2
Sheesh, the ending is dire. I haven't seen that much gore in a while.

So any suggestions?
I see you have no problems with "pixelated" horror games, so check out "Lone Survivor". Looks pretty good from what I saw in a Let's Play.
I have my eye on "The Cat Lady". Seems pretty cool but unfortunately the pack that had it didn't win the "Community's Choice" vote.
"Cry of Fear" is Free and from what I saw in a Let's Play it can be pretty darn good.
Check the "Penumbra" series. This one is more about puzzle and survival, I can only guess this is where Amnesia got it's inspiration from.
And of course if the platform isn't a problem, get the Project Zero / Fatal Frame (different name in Europe and USA) series for PS2. Damn, I love these games.
I will! Thank ya!

Tropico 4's pretty much an expandalone of 3. It includes 3's content whilst adding more of it own and IRC some more functionality. They're decent enough, but once you have things up its easy to just coast through the end game (setting the game to one of the hard difficulties is recommended). I'd suggest playing through the story mode then sandbox if you want to kill some time. Once you reach the end game you may find yourself doing your best to piss off the super powers or trying to start a revolution against you, but by that point you'll be so entrenched in power that it can be a real challenge (I mean you can outlaw entire opposition factions, kill their leaders, murder people in the streets, start burning books and yet people'll still worship you). 5 is apparently more of the same, though it cuts out most of the character building elements (which are robust-ish. If you're going to buy the game most of the DLC include odd bit of extra clothing or traits to the creator) and suffers from the same slow down in its end game.
One thing that new players probably won't know (I can't remember if its explicitly listed in the controls) is that you can switch between various designs for most of the props in the world. Its been a while since I played unfortunately, but have a go at hammering the keys about the comma key when you have an object selected. =P
As far as DLC go I'd say pick up the big ones, but unless you're just wanting more content or if they're pennies avoid the DLCs. Most of them add in a new scenario, character traits and clothing, plus the odd new prop. I'm assuming that 5, like 4 before it, will already include most of the props, so if you're buying the DLC just for those you may as well buy 5.

Don't buy 3 when 4's available. 4's just 3 with more content and all of the DLCs. There's no point in buying three and its DLC when you can have all of that already included in 4. =P

It's good. Like Sim City but for an island nation with you as a Fidel Castro stand-in. In fact, the tutorial you play AS Fidel Castro, learning from General Santana. Afterwards though you can customize your own character, and it's quite in depth and adds for some nice characterization of your tinpot dictator. It has an exellent sense of humor, and the gameplay is pretty good.

I wasn't much a fan of the gameplay either. It was my first Third Person Brawler since Arkham City, and Geralt handles like a cow in a shopping cart in comparison.

Do you have a better name for a Third Person not-Shooter? However you want to put it, the combat in Arkham City was fun. The combat in The Witcher 2 was not.

Yes, a third person perspective game. Would you call The Walking Dead a brawler? Or Assassin's Creed?

Yeah. There are different types of games played in 3rd person. Just 'cause you don't shoot doesn't make it a "brawler". And games like Assassin's Creed are usually called "Open World" games anyway. And the Witcher 2 is neither. It's an third person RPG.

I second that emotion. For all its flaws the Witcher 2 is probably my favourite of all the open world on rails games (Mass effect et al). As the Witcher 3 seems to be dealing specifically with the most irritating issues I can safely say that it is currently one of my most anticipated games.

The combat in those games was basically perfect (well, not Origins... they did something intangible in that game that made it not as tight). Every move is deliberate, and you methodically press the attack and direction buttons (plus special combos) rather than just madly mashing attack. Looks like you'll be working for them, based on the trailers (and Charles Dance is voicing the Emperor!).
