Have always loved the fluff of the Vox, hated the rules since 5th...
The problem is it doesn't play like a real radio..
If you were standing within 10m (4inch?) a Vox would make things WORSE!
And yet the whole point of sending a message further isn't even attempted in the new edition which ticked me off to be honest.

Proposal- no rerolls/ Vox increases the range of orders given by Officers to squads in the same detachment with Vox.
Things to debate-
What range?
Should it be line of sight? Should LoS merely modify the roll?
Should there be modifiers to using a Vox out of normal range?
Should there be a point increase
Should it be capped to certain orders?

Discuss.

How about, an officer with a vox in his unit may issue one of his orders a turn to any friendly unit on the board if they have a vox.

So he gets one board wide order a turn?

Maybe limit board wide orders to one per company command squad being used a game. (So one company command squad means only one officer (any) may issue a board wide order a turn, however having 2 means you get 2 board wide orders a turn from any officer).

Or something like that.

Yep, current vox doesn't make sence. It looks like the officer throwing it at a soldier that didn't get an order in the first place. Works like a bosspole. Maybe it should inflict a wound also as it's now.

How it should work:

If a unit has vox and an officer still capable of issuing orders, he may order any unit from the same detachment that also has vox. If the ordered unit is out of officer's los or command radius, it recieves -1 (probably even d3-1 cause it'd be in GW spirit to make you roll more dice) penalty for a LD check to see if the order was sucksessful.

Now it's sometimes worth taking vox for your chimeravets.

I'd like to go by the KISS design philosophy.

If a unit includes a Vox communicator, orders may be issued to it regardless of range as long as the issuing officer's unit includes a Vox Communicator. Note, orders can still be issued to the unit by a unit without a Vox Caster as long as the range requirements are met even if it was previously issued orders by an officer through the Vox communicator special rule.

Part of the problem is that hey need to figure out what a vox is, because some sources have it as a kind of loud speaker, in which case the current stats kind of make sense (other than the reciever needing one).

The vox' secondary rules in the Elysian list make sense - they let a unit benefit from the Long-Range Ground Scanner at any range.

Easy solution...

CCS Wargear: VOX network, 15 points, the range when issuing orders is increased by 6". This stacks with the Bellowing Voice warlord trait. All restrictions apply (e.g. "Enemy target must be in LOS of the officer").

While it's reasonable to say that an officer has a way to direct forces across the battle field (radio, hand signals, flags, runners, whatever...how do you think he's telling your tanks where to go?), it makes sense that he'll be more effective at ordering nearby units. The urgency, inspiration, and threats that he's attempting to convey will come through much more effectively when he's nearby (good luck ordering those guys to stop running away over the phone).

Here's mine.

For the price, the vox caster can keep the re-roll. Change the rules to this:

A unit containing one vox caster per 10 models can have an order issued to them, regardless of their distance from the issuing officer. Furthermore, any unit with a vox caster can accept orders from within a building or vehicle.

I've actually never read a book from black library once that doesn't describe or use military Vox's as modern day radio.. Complete with range and distortion..
There are some books that go on about loud-speakers by they always seem to to call them loud-Vox or something Vox

The problem I have is I think for 5points even at ten models each is a bit low for rangeless orders.. And especially re-rolls!!
That's just a little bit biased in my mind

Not 5 pts but 10 pts. Cause you still need vox in both squads. And that's why i suggest a ld penalty for a broad-ranged order if out of radius or out of los.
