So I'm going to warhammer world this Saturday and, despite being more expensive, feel like it would be a nice idea to start a new army while there.

I'm really tempted by Eldar or Necrons but would like to hear some ideas on what I could get to start off an army with around £100.

So yeah, any suggestions would be really appreciated!

Thanks,
Swalker

What is that, $150 USD? Yeah... you aren't starting an army at retail price with that. I'd either buy a Battleforce if you want to buy from them that bad or save your money and plan your purchases out more.

Erm roughly. Not sure how GW prices convert though, as in if US pay technically more than we do.

Well what would be an ideal way to start either of those armies? It's roughly 100 but that could quite easily increase when I get carried away while there...

Dollar is currently around 1.6, so closer to $160 US, but, yeah, not a lot.

Why not, rather than start an army as such, invest in something big and shiny from Forge World?

You can pick up the plastic stuff from any old store, often at a discount, but how often can you pick up FW models with no shipping?

Some sort of big centrepiece model, like a Revenant Titan perhaps? You could start your army with it's figurehead, rather than with it's core choices.

Don't buy a Forgeworld model just because you happen to be at Warhammer World. My friend did that and now he's stuck with an expensive Forgeworld Land Raider that nobody wants to play against and now sits dejected and unpainted on his shelf.

Anyway, prices in Warhammer World will be identical to the ones on here. So, make a basket worth £100...well you can afford that many units.

I can't give advice on eldar or tyranids though I'll let someone else give advice on that front.

The mistake your friend made, by the sounds of it, was make a spontaneous purchase from WHW. Thinking in advance, consulting likely opponents and their attitude etc or simply buying something which can 'counts as' a regular 40K unit would all have solved your friends problem.

You literally told the OP to do the exact same thing. Not saying that it isn't good advice since you do solve a lot on Forgeworld, but it should only be something you've already put thought into.

No lad, I didn't,

The fact that the OP created this thread in the first place suggests he isn't going there and spunking his money on something random and subsequently not being able to use it, and is more likely to make a considered purchase he can get use from.

A fancy-pants Land Raider seems like the perfect thing that could also "counts-as" for a regular one. Same deal with a Contemptor Dread, Rhino variants, etc.

Go to warhammer world, see what you like and then go back home and buy it of ebay.

If you wanted to buy Forgeworld stuff to get started with Eldar, look through the Imperial Armour 11 book.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Armour_Books/IMPERIAL-ARMOUR-VOLUME-ELEVEN-THE-DOOM-OF-MYMEARA.html
The models in here are in the Apoc books now, I think. Hornets and wasps get talked about a lot, as do the Shadow Spectre aspect warriors.
There's also the Wraithseer, if you wanted to go with Iyanden, maybe.
Anything non-FW, get it from your FLGS instead.

Sounds like your friend needs a new group of people to play against.

I'm a full advocate for nice centerpiece forgeworld model.

Forgeworld models are great. There should be no reason to quible over them, unless they are totally different to the standard version (if there is one).
It's the rules people have some reason to object to. But, as most are in the Apoc books, that's little excuse either.

For Necrons you could buy the Battleforce at 70 quid

So that's

x20 Necron Warriors
x5 Immortals/Deathmark
x1 Ghost Ark/Doomsday Ark
x5 bases of Scarabs

Then buy yourself a Catacomb Command Barge/Annihilation Barge (£22.50), which happens to come with a Necron Overlord too. Bargain.

Forgeworld models with the 40k stamp are LEGAL in a game of 40k. Tell your friends to man up lol.

This makes a very nice start to a Cron army, if you take the Barge as an annihilation Barge, you're on around 800 points with gear on the Overlord. If you want more, then throw in a Lychguard box for Lord/Cryptek conversions, or more immortals to round out the squad.

And people are free to play or not play you regardless.

Personally I am not impressed at all by the one forgeworld model I own, nor at the QC when they sent me two of the same piece and not one of each piece, nor at the customer service where it took about 3 weeks for them to reply to any method of contact.

True enough.

Which model was it you bought just out of curiosity?

To the OP I would save your hard earned money and buy from eBay or second hand from here on dakkadakka. I picked up a huge Skaven army a few months ago from eBay for around $200.

Nothing wrong with shows. Just doing to go WHW and buy the same stuff you can get from any other GW, at full RRP.

I'm vaguely curious as to which Land Raider it is "that nobody wants to play against." The only two Land Raiders that are anywhere close to being scary are the Achilles and the Spartan. And the Spartan is only scary in the Legion list where it can take the Flare Shield (and, usually, the contents of the Spartan are scarier than the Spartan itself).

The only stuff I would buy at Warhammer World, apart from Forgeworld (and begging them on my knees to let me watch them make it so I can see the magic happen), would be lots of Bugman's Bar merchandise.

Before or after watching Forgeworld make with the magic?

Dammit... now I am picturing wearable Bugman's Beer Goggles from Forgeworld....

The Auld Grump - who is a lot more likely to buy Forgeworld than straight GW these days.....

I'd have thought the pimp ride of Marneus Calgar would be scary enough. Isn't it packing x6 las cannons?

You mean the Terminus Ultra? The Land Raider that was a Games™ Workshop™ Product™ entirely and was not a creation of Forgeworld's design team?

Cheers for all the input. I know how much cheaper eBay is etc., I've built most of my collection from cheap deals and discount sites but just wanted to start a new army while I was there...call me sentimental!

Ended up going for a necron battleforce, command barge and a box of wraiths.

Also Warhammer World is really worth a visit if you're thinking of going and are undecided. Some of the tables are amazing and the Space Wolves/Tyranids big diorama in the model room is absolutely stunning!
