For shame Ireland
When o' when will our political elite actually listen to the will of the people.

I'm not Irish but I think that song encapsulates the spirit of a modern Ireland. It should be their entry every year

Trouble with Eurovision is that it tends to become a national embarrassment, and some nations take it far more seriously than others. Though it lost most mainstream attention after the 70's.
There was twice talk about having an Israeli entry banned because it might bring shame and disrepute to the country; once in 1998 and once in 2007, though for completely different reasons..
Father Ted, great show though it was, is a BBC production with Irish Catholic stereotypes. I can see the Dail wanting to look elsewhere for inspiration for Eurovision, and that being reflected in the committees decisions.
Besides aren't they supposed to be recent songs? Father Ted is from the mid 90's.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I can't quite work out when it suddenly moved to being viewed as so-bad-it's-good ...? I must have missed a vote or something.

I rather enjoyed watching Eurovision this year.
The best song was the Netherlands entry though.

It was big in the 70's, ABBA went amateur in order to take part. Still noticed in the early 80's but didnt so much as step down as slide over time.
From the Uk perspective it didnt help that Terry Wogan could not be pried away, which prevented modernisation of the image, and it has oft been said we don't want winners from the Uk or we would have to go through the expense of hosting it.

True, but either way its British TV not Irish TV, so it could be said to be British stereotypes of Irish religion, not exactly the best way of promoting ones own cultural material.
If someone did a cover version maybe, but doesnt it have to be a new original song to qualify?

Eurovision is like a multi-country sing-off or something?

There is a web site with all the videos and stuff but you probably can't get it because of copyright.

It was funded and originally aired by Channel 4 but it had an Irish cast, it was filmed in Ireland and it was written by Irishmen. Its 'Britishness' is debatable.
Irish politics are a tragedicomedy in their own right.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.
