ok so i haven't played before and i was wondering if it would matter in terms of rules and stuff if i had the Forgeworld or the GW avatar model. I will just be playing friendly matches and i think that the Forgeworld model looks cooler (because it is bigger) will this disadvantage me in anyway [it is just friendly but i still want to win ]. I intend to use the rules from the GW codex.

They're both legal models from GW and FW so I don't suspect you'll have any problems but you can never guarantee something like that. I have an old RT land raider and one young player accused me of modelling for advantage with a kitbash!

Rules-wise, there are no other rules for the Avatar other than those in the codex.

The problem being with its size, the advantages outweigh any disadvantages - larger base means larger Fearless bubble, taller model gives better LOS, etc.

That said, would you be willing to treat it as the same size as the stock model?

If yes, then you should be fine. If not, then you may find people will not want to play against it.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

It will disadvantage you in that more things will see it to shoot at it, but the larger base will expand the range of his morale buff.

In my opinion it's mostly a wash with the downside being a bit worse than the benefit.

It also looks way cooler (especially the spear wielding one) So that should win out.

In terms of rules, both are equally acceptable, even at Super Serious Tournaments. Forgeworld guy is bigger, which means he's easier to get Line of Sight to and harder to give a cover save. Being bigger also means he can give more guys behind him a cover save though, and prevent the enemy from charging them as easily.

The only way there'd ever be an issue is if you used the old original Avatar model, which was about the size of a guardian.

Definitely a great looking choice and by far the most impressive looking. Here is a comparison between the three that have been offered over the years by one of our fellow dakkites:

The larger FW Avatar can be used to represent the Avatar in the Phoenix Court of Khaine formation for Apocalypse. Essentially it is a more powerful Avatar, awakened by absorbing a soul from each of the major Phoenix Lords. Its Wailing Doom and Awakened rule gets increased range, it gains immunity to melta and plasma in addition to the existing flame immunity, and it gains additional Attacks based on the number of Phoenix Lords close by.

I've got him, too. Played him during an Apoc game several years ago, just for the sake of all the other players who'd never seen the model before, and I forgot to do anything with him on a turn or two, because he was under a ruined building's balcony!

If you play with super-serious rulemonkies, the FW Avatar is an official model for an entry in the official Codex, and is mounted on the base that it is supplied with. 100% legal, even for the no-FW crowd (which are concerned with FW rules, not FW models).

Plus, he just looks totally freaking awesome. The GW model is nice and all, but just can't compare.

Denying it is like denying some clampack Captain, because the pose is somehow better than the 'standard' kit.
